Our invention relates to improvements in washing machines with more particular reference to that type of machine employing a stationary tub and an oscillatory agitator therein, and the object of the invention is to devise a more efiicient machine by providing for a more perfect and effective movement or circulation of the water in the tub and the clothes being washed therein.
Our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which 2-- Fig. 1 is a central vertical elevation of the tub and agitator of a washing machine constructed in accordance with our invention, the agitator being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the agitator, the View being taken at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the agitator.
In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various views.
The present application relates to the tub and agitator only and therefore these parts of the machine only have been illustrated since the manner of driving the agitator is no part of this application. 7
In the form illustrated, our invention comprises a cylindrical tub 1 having the upper edge rolled at 2.
The bottom of the tub is of concave dished form at 3 and is formed with a central depression 4 which forms a sediment zone at the bottom of the tub.
The bottom would be sweated onto the tub or otherwise suitably secured thereto.
The agitator 5 used in our invention comprises the fiat disc'like base 6 and the central standard 7 projecting perpendicularly therefrom.
This standard would be in the form of sleeve to provide for supporting and 'driv-- ing the agitator from the shaft 8 as .described in our copending application but as this does not form part of this present application it will not be described in detail other than to say that the agitator oscillates within the tub, which oscillation may be provided for in any suitable manner.

the fins of each air being parallel and on opposite sides 01: the standard 7 and are further ofi'set laterally to lie in different planes.
Each fin extends from the periphery of the base 6 and merges into the standard 7 at a oint adjacent to the top thereof.
ach fin comprises a lower portion A upstanding from the base 6 and an upper portion projecting laterally from the standard 7, the profile of the lower portions A being of concavo-convex form with the convex portion outermost or nearest the periphery.
The upper portions B of the fins 9 are of substantially the same width for the greater part of their length and towards the top are inclined rapidly in to the point where they merge into the standard.
The upper portions C of the fins 10 are of gradually decreasing width throughout and finally merge into the standard 7 The agitator is supported Within the tub so that the base lies within the depression 4.
A drain faucet 11 communicates with an outlet orifice in the bottom of the tub and about this outlet a small depression is formed in the bottom.
A lid 12 is provided for the tub and the construction of this lid is novel.
The peripheral edge of the lid 12 is rolled downwardly at 13 and the lid is formed with -an annular downwardly dished portion 14 in spaced relation from the peripheral edge 18 so as to form an annular recess 15 in the under face of the lid between the rolled edge 13 and the dished portion 14. 7 'When the lid is placed in position the rolled edge 2 of the tub projects into this annular recess 15.
The dished portion 14 thus extends downwardly below the top edge of the tub and all splash from the under face of the lid drains directly back into the tub so that the lid is self draining and it is impossible for suds to leak over the top of the tub.
The operation of our invention is as follows After the tub has been properly filled with water and clothes to be washed the agitator 5 is driven with an oscillatory motion.
Owing to the peculiar form of agitator and the fins 9 and 10 thereof in combination with the dished portion 3 of the tub bottom the contents of the tub are given a circular rolling motion as illustrated by the broken line circles in Fig. 1.
The movement is outwardly over the dished bottom 3, upwardly at the circumterence of the tub and downwardly towards the center of the tub.
This not only results in a very complete and thorough circulation'ot the water but keeps the clothes in constant and vigorous movement, thus insuring very efi'ective Washing. y
'lhe upper portions of the fins 9 and 10 prevent the clothes from sticking close to the center of the-tub and keep them out towards the outside of the tub.
' From the foregoing it will be apparent that we have devised improvements in washing machines whereby the objects of our invention have been attained.
W hat we claim as our invention is:
1. An agitator for a washing machine comprising a fiat disc like base, a central standard upstanding axially therefrom, four fins, each tin com-prising a lowerportion up standing from the base and an upper portion projecting laterally from the standard, the marginal edges of the lower portions merging into those of the upper portions, said fins disposed in opposed pairs about the agitator, the fins of each opposed pair being similar and lying in parallel planes perpendicular to the planes of the other opposed pair, and the planes of each opposed pair olfset laterally on opposite sides of the diametral plane parallel to said pair, the lower upstanding portions of all fins being similar ma am 2. In a washing machine, the combination with a cylindrical tub, and an agitator according to claim 1 mounted therein for oscillation about the axis of the tub, of a con cave dished bottom for the tub, said dished bottom extending from the periphery of the disc like base of the agitator to the wall of the tub, the innermost portion of said dished bottom being level with the top surface of the disc like base of the agitator,
