UNITED STATES "1,628,746 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. RUSSEL, OF COLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MARI- ETTA HOLLOW WARE AND ENAMELING COMPANY, OF MARIETT A, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION DRAIN BOARD AND COVER.
Application filed June 22, 1926. Serial No. 117,795.
This invention relates in general to an improvement in combination drainboards and covers for use with the combined t pe of kitchen sink and laundry tray, and more particularly the present invention is an improvement in the combination kitchen sink and laundry tray of the type forming the subject-matter of my co-pending application filed January 25, 1926, Serial Number One of the principal objects of the invention resides in the provision of a combinationcover and drainboard ofthis character which seats down in the body of the combination sink and laundry tray structure so as to avoid the spilling of water and leaves the desirable clearance between the combined drainboard and cover and the spigots without the necessity of modifying the structure of the combination sink and laundry tray. Along with these advantages the present invention rovides means which greatly facilitates t e application and removal of the combined drain board and cover without danger of injuring the combination sink and tray construction. Accordingly the present invention provides a combination drainboard and cover having a body designed to completely cover the opening leading into the laundry tray. One'end of the bod of the combination drainboard and cover as a discharge section which extends over the partition of the combined sink and laundry tray. At the other end of the body of the combination drain board and cover an upwardly offset or curved hanger is provided and this curved hanger for the major ortion of its extent covers the contour 0 the rounded u per edge of the outside wall of the combination. tray and sink structure. Centrally of the offset hanger there is provided an upwardl disposed section which constitutes a hand e below which a pocket is formed to receive the fingers or hand of the person applying or removing the combination drain board and tray. The hanger of the combination drain board and tray is stiffened by means of ribs or corrugat ons and at least two of the corrugations merge into the ends of the handle section to strengthen and stiffen the same.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
. Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a combination sink and laundry tray equipped with a combined cover and drainboard embodying the present invention,
Figure 2 is a view thereof in central 1ongitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view showing the end of the combination cover and drainboard equipped with the hanger and handle.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates generally a combination sink and laundry tray structure which is of the usual type and has an outside wall 2, the u er edge of which is rounded and a artition 3, the upper edge of which terminates at a lialvel below the upper edge of the outside wa The present invention proposes the provision of a combined cover and drain board, designated generally at 5, and having a body 6 formed with a marginal flange and the usual drain channels. Preferably this body 6 is of such size and shape as to completely fill the openin leading down into the laundry tray or sink, as the case may be, it being understood that the combination drain board and cover is reversible; that is, adapted for use with either the tray or the sink of the fixture on which it is mounted. At one end the combination cover and drainboard 5 is provided with a discharge section 7 and at its opposite end has a hanger, designated general y at 8, constituted by a transversely reduced extension of the body of the tray. For the major portion of its transverse extent the hanger 8 is curved to snugly fit the rounded upper edge of the outside 'end wall 2 of the fixture and b virtue of the fact that this hanger is upwar y offset the drainboard is supported down in the tray or sink and below the upper edge of the outside wall, thereby reventing the spilling of water. This positioning of the combination drain board and cover down in the opening of the tray or sink makes it difficult to appl or remove the tray and when appl ing til it is sometimes dropped, there y tending to injure the tray or the fixture. A plicant has remedied these disadvantages y providing the hanger with an upwardly dise tray posed or offset central section 9 which affords a handle or handgrip and which defines a (pocket 10 to accommodate the fingers or han of the operator. By inserting the fingers in the pocket 10 and grasping the upwardly displaced section 9 the drainboard may be conveniently manipulated. The metal of the hanger is stifi'ened and reinforced by ribs or corrugations ,10, 11, 12 and 13 and the corrugations 11 and 12 mer e into the portions of the section 9 of the anger that connect with the main portion or section of the hanger, thereby strengthening the hanger section and stiffening the same at the points where it is liable to be weakened by the formation of the upwardly displaced central section 9.
One of the main features of the drain board resides in the fact that it is made of one piece metal without attachments and yet has the advanta es and improvements pointed out hereina ove.
1. A combination drain board and cover for use with a combination laundry tray and sink comprisin a one piece metal body having one end a apted to engage a partition of the combination laundry tray and sink and having an n wardly and outwardly curved extension efining a hanger at its opposite end designed to snugly engage the rounded outside wall of the combination laundry tray and sink for the major portion of the extent of the hanger, the central portion of the hanger bein struck-up providing a pocket between t e hanger and the rounded upper edge of the outside wall of the combination laundry tray and sink permitting the fingers to be introduced under the hanger, the upwardly struck central section of the hanger constituting a hand grip, facilitating application and removal 0 the combination, cover and drain board.
2. The combination with a combined laundry tray and sink having anoutside wall provided with an annular upper edge and also having a transverse partition, the upper edge of'which partition is located below the plane of the upper edge of the outside wall, of a combined drain board and cover consisting of a one piece metal body fitting down inthe opening of the tray or sink and completely covering the same, one end of said body having a discharge section engaging and overhanging the partition, the other end of said body having an upwardly and outwardly curved portion defining a han er section adapted to snu ly fit the rounded upper edge of the outsi e wall, said hanger section having a struck-up central portion roviding a hand gri P J SHN W.
