My invention relates to railroads and has for its object to provide a new and etlicient combination of an angle bar, rail plate and joiner.
A further object is to provide a new and economicallyv constructed angle bar and joiner which will prevent creeping ofthe rails and which will brace the rails when used on curves.
A still further object is to prevent rails from splitting, breaking or being turned over.
A still further object is to provide a joiner which will malte atrue joint where two rails are joined together and which may be used with or without the usual bolts or if the bolts should become loosened or lost the rails will be held in perfect alinement without danger to the passing` trains.
These objects l accomylish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specification forming a part of this application and as pointed out in the appended claim.
ln the drawings of which l have shown the best and most preferred manner of building my invention, Figure l is a side elevation of my device joining two rails together. Figure 2 is an end elevation of my device with the rails shown in place therein. Figure 3 is an end view of the removable locking portion of my device. Figure 4t is a plan view of' the same inverted, and Figure 5 is a plan view ot the angle bar and rail plate combined. y
In the drawings I have shown the common rail as` A and in fastening abutting rails together some form of angle bars has always been used, and on most railway tracks, tie or rail plates are used on each tie, and some use rail plates which are integral or secured t0 the angle bars and rest on but one tie; therefore, when the train passes over the end of ,joined rails the end of the rail gives and is forced downwardly and the wheel of 'the cars strikes the ends of the abutting rail and causes them to creep. Also when the trains are rounding curves the force of the wheels with its combined momentum and weight will cause the rails to turn over sideways unless braced from the outside of the plate. lVith my device these objections are all eliminated and the rails will. be held solid, both from end motion and side movement. The present invention consists of a horizontally disposed base plate B, having one side l built upwardly in the shape of the outside of the rail A and to fit under the head of the rail. The opposite edge of the said rail plate is formed upwardly to make a recess 2 under a flange 3. Brace reinforcements .l are provided back of the side 1 bracing the side from being bent or broken from sidc pressure from the rail or the load thereon. A hole 6 is provided in the bottom of the plate B with its side walls at an angle to the main plane of the base B. Lugs or bosses 7 are provided on the bottom of the said plate B which are driven into the ties and prevent creeping or side motion of the base. A locking member C is then provided with one edge 5 adapted to fit under the said flange 3 inthe recess 2 of the base B. The other edge of the said member is built up and has a flange 8 formed thereon which, when assembled, fits against the inner side of the web of the rail and under the head.
Medially on the bottom of the said mem- A ber C I provide a boss or lug 9, which is shaped similar to the hole 6 and when the device is assembled is adapted to fit within the said hole 6. Holes 10 are provided in both the base and the locking member through which the spikes may be driven when they are secured to the ties. Holes may be bored through the rails and the flanges l and 8 through which bolts 11 are passed and secured when the devicey is assembled.
To assemble my invention, the base plate B is secured to the ties by spikes and the y rails placed under the side 1. The locking member C is then placed in the position with the edge 5 engaging the under side of the flange 3 in the recess 2, with thelug 9 started into the hole 6 of the base plate B. Pressure either by leverage or a blow will 'force the flange 8 inwardly and downwardly under the head of the rail. As it passes the most projecting point of the head of the rail it will slip freely int-o position, inwardly until the flange 8 rests against the web of the rail and the lug 9 is engaged in the hole 6. Spikes may then be driven through the holes 1 0 and the rail is ready for use.
The device may be made long enough to engage two ties with its lower face resting on the upper 'faces of the ties or may be made longer to rest on three or four ties if so desired.
