A. MOORE PAPER DISH Filed March 25. 1921 I INVENTOR ,y /r/yfan Mac/c wa /W ATTORNEY,

UNITED STATES tsgzoso PATENT OFFICE..-
.ARLINGTON MOORE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAPER DISH.
Application filed March 23, 1921. Serial No. 454,771.
paper stock may be single or multiple ply with or without incorporating a binder, and the dish may be coated with parafiin or otherwise treated to resist moisture and to withstand washing. l
The re-enforced rim of the present invention is particularly suited for a shallow dish such as has a slightly upturned side wall.
The rim is triple-enforced and formed out side the inner surface of the dish and from a continuation of the stock thereof folded into three overlying portions to obtain a low dish of relatively large diameter but shallow. 'lhe'overlying portions may be arranged substantially parallel to the plane of the top edge of the side wall and the result is enhanced where the upper surface of the rim is made to lie in said plane. Where the rim is highly compressed and practically solidified under great pressure and the folds of stock rigidly set to permanent gage dimensions, the dish is substantially re-enforced against deformation under pressure in handling. Preferably the bottom of the dish has an annular depressiontherein ad-- jacen't the side wall to serve as a stand there- In the specific embodiment described hereinafter, the rim is formed from a continuation of the stock of the dish and comprises 21 depending portion, a base portion, an intermediate portion, a section joining said base and intermediate portions, and an em closed terminal ortion, the upper surfaces of the intermediate portion lying in the plane of the top edge of the sidewall.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodimentof the invention in application, as an example, to a shal-. low dish of single ply stock. 7
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation; of the dish partly in section and partly in full view, and Fi 2 is a plan view thereof.
The dish has a bottom 1 and an n turned side wall 2. The bottom 1- is provi ed with an annular depression 3 adjacent the side wall 2 forming a. projection 4 which serves as a stand for the 'sh. In addition to mviding a. projection for supporting the side wall 2.
the depression 3 also acts to set the side of the dish permanently with relation to the bottom, so that deformation of the dish by ordinary use is prevented in this respect.
The formation of the depression 3 is accomplished during the molding operation which is performed on the dish in the process of manufacture, the stock being bent downward somewhat sharplyat the peripheral line of the side, forming a sharp angle at each side of the bottom. Any relative T bending action of the side and bottom will be distributed throughout these bent por tions. To set the stock permanently in this form, so that it will mamtain its resiliency under ordinary usage, the sides and bottom of the depression are subjected to a pressure which is substantially greater than that a. plied to other portions of the dish. T e depth of the depression is made no greater than is necessary for the die to press and mold the stock into an angular form at this point.
With. a dish constructed as above deat its edge and by the ang-ularly molded depression at its inner eriphery.
The re-enforced mm 11 of the dish is formed outside the inner surface thereof and from a continuation of the side wall 2, and
comprises a depending portion 5, a. base portion 6, a. reversely extending intermediate portion 7, a section 8 joining the base and intermediate portions, and a terminal portion 9 enclosed between the base and intermediate portions. The upper surface of the rim lies in the lane of the top edge 10 of the 'is construction permits the formation of a re-enforced rim to strengthen the dish against deformation in use while at the same time adding nothing to the depth-thereof so that the dish can be made extremely shallow. V
The run is sub'ected, in forming, to a pressure of about mm 4000 to 6000 pounds- I square inch, underwhich it becomes fihli compressed and practically solidified, an e folds thereof are rigidlyset to permanent gag]: dimensions.
I claim is:-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a paper dish formed from an inte disk of paper and com rising outside 0 the flaring annulus exten mg-from the bottom of the dish described my invention, what a. reenforced, multifold, substantially consolidated annular rim in which the longer way of the folds extend substantially parallel to the plane of the dish bottom.
2. Article as in claim 1, in which the rim has three folds, with the third fold extending first downwardly and then outwardly and having its raw edge embedded between the other twofolds.
3. In a paper dish, an upturned side wall, and a triple-enforced rim formed outside the inner surface of the dish and from a continuation of the stock thereof and comprising a depending portion, a base portion, an intermediate portion, a section joining said base and intermediate portions, and an enclosed terminal portion, the upper surface of said intermediate portion lying in the plane of the top edge of said side wall.
4. In a paper dish of one piece stock, a circular bottom having a side wall extending obliquely upward therefrom, the portion of the stock extending from the bottom to the side Wall being moulded to form an annular, flat-bottomed depression having its sides disposed angularly to the bottom and to the side wall and the bottom of the dish, resipectively, and said side wall having a reen orced rim whereby strains on the whole dish are distributed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
