IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,592, dated April 27, 1875 application filed March 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN SINGER WAL- LACE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combined Sash- Lock and WVindoW-Pull, of which the followin g is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved device applied to the window-sashes, by which the upper sash may be readily pulled down, and both be locked securely, without interfering in the least with the opening, closing, or cleanin g other parts of the window.
The invention consists in a novel method of arranging and suspending from the point of a metal bracket, at the upper cross-piece of the window, a stiff rod, which extends below the double cross-piece of the sashes sufficient] y far down to be used as a handle for lowering This pendent rod is provided at the side next to the window, at a point near the double cross-piece, with a spring, in the shape of an inverted umbrella spring, which looks over the lower sash. The rod swings like a pendulum in a metallic oblong socket attached to the upper cross-piece of the lower sash, and may be taken outof the same through an open-front recess, for being removed, while the unobstructed opening and closing of either sash are permitted by a side or notched recess in the rear part of the socket, along which the spring is allowed to slide out.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a window with my improved sash lock and pull attached; Fig.2, a vertical transverse section of the same in the line 0 0, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a horizontal section on the-line :1; AL, Fig. 1, showing the guidesocket in detail.

A A represent the sashes of the window, which are hung by end pulleys and weightsin the customary manner. To the top cross-piece of the sash A is securely attached the bracket B, with hook-shaped end, to which the rigid pendent rod 0, of wood, metal, or other material is hung by an eye or other device, a, to
swing freely thereon like a. pendulum. The rod is suspended in such a manner to the pivot-bracket B that it may be readily detached therefrom, if desired, for cleaning or repairing the window, by swinging it forward to an angle of forty-five degrees, or thereabout. The stiff rod 0 is extended below the double cross-pieces of the sashes and provided with a handle for operating the same. It slides readily in a metallic guide or socket, D, open, or recessed at d, and is attached to the upper cross-piece of the lower sash, which serves to guide the rod. The rod 0 hangs freely by its weight in the center, and is provided with a spring, 0, at the side facing the window, which spring is in the nature of an inverted umbrella-spring and attached slightly above the upper face of the socket, which is flush with the double cross-piece.
A side notched recess, I), of the rear part of socket D, is intended for the spring to pass down through the same when the rod is pushed aside, to bear against the side part of the socket, for raising the lower sash. In closing the sash, the spring will be forced inwardly and resume its position to lock the sash, when the same has passed below it. An opening or recess, d, in the front part of the guide-socket, admits the rod to be taken out, the same performing its function even when left out accidentally, as it will catch by the spring on the guide or double cross-piece on seeking its center of gravity toward the window, to which it is applied as a guard or look device.
The device is readily attached to any window, and afi'ords great convenience, particularly in the opening and closing of the upper sash, which is often out of reach, or so difh'cult to be taken hold of as seldom to be used for ventilating purposes, for which it is specially adapted. At the same time with this a simple, self-adjusting, and secure lock for both sashes is provided, which, being applied at the inside, is not exposed to burglars, nor in the way of inside shutters or curtains, &c. The rod and locking device may be finished in suitable ornamental manner, according to the purposes required, and will form a neat and convenient attachment to the windows of concert-halls, public buildings, and private dwellin gs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ters Patent- The combination of rod 0, hung t0 bracket B, and having spring G, with the guide or socket D, attached to upper cross-piece of the lower sash, and having an opening, (I, and notched recess b, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
