This invention relates to amachine and method for making paper boxes. i
The main object attained in the Invention consists in an automatic, or semi-au- .5 tomatic machinaadapted to makepaper boxes, the adhesive element for forming the joints of the boxes consisting 1n adhesive tape. and more particuiarly in the form of the invention here-in shown and described, I" tape having adhesive on both sides, hereinafter referred to as double faced adhesive tape. A
Recent experimentation and limited commercial practice has proved that adheslve tape is superior to ordinary adhesives, as glue, cement, etc., for forming the oints of paper boxes, particularly of boxes pro duced in large quantities by automatic machinery, the adhesive as'appli'ed to the tape being more uniform, more responsive to moisture and quicker to effect adhesion than ordinary glue, or cements; also the tape is less troubfesome, being cleaner and a self contained adhesive, as applied by the box making machines. and likewise cleaner and in all respects more satisfactory for boxes delivered knocked-down and set-up by the user. I
The improved machine, as herein set forth, is adapted for large quantity production and to be operated by the unskilled, except as .to acquired skill in facilitating production.
The machine is adaptable for producing boxes of Widely diversified character in size and design and to produce the uniformity of construction which is essential to a first quality product of this character.
In the accompanying drawings the improved machine is shown in a form-which illustrates the practice of the invention as used in making a common rectangular shaped box, it being understood that both the machine and the method of making boxes on the machine readily lend themselves to suitabe modifications to adapt the I practice of the invention to general paper box making.

The improved box making apparatus as here shown comprises three main functions, i. e., the function of positioning a box blank on the, machine preliminary to the sealing operation, the function of applying strips of adhesive tape to certain of the portions of the box which are to be joined together, and the function of forming the joints, all operations of the machine being-directly or indirectly coordinated to this accomplishment.
r The machine as bost'shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is supported on a frame structure comprising an open base 100 and a hollow column 101 extended upwardly from the Rotatably mounted on column 101 is a work carrier 102 having a plurality, as here shown, of box supporting bases 103, the carrier is driven by a motor 104 and has an intermittent movement, with three stops to each complete rotation of the carrier. The driving connections between the motor and carrier consist of a shaft 105, flexible coupling 106, worm gears 107108, divided shafts 109110, clutch 111, segment gear 112, bevel gear 113, shaft 114, spur gear and ring gear 116,the latter being secured in the lower portion of carrier 102, the segment gear 112 having the required relation with gear 113 to actuate the carrier a third turn upoh each rotation of gear'112. In normal operation of the machine the driving relation between the motor and gear 112 is continuous. To stop movement of the carrier the driving connection is broken by shifting clutch 111 by means of the usual clutch connection yoke 117, shifter shaft 118, foot lever 119, yoke connected to shaft 118 as indicated at 121, a spring tensioned latch 122 serving to hold lever 119 when the clutch is disengaged. Upon releasing of the latch a spring 123 acts to raise the lever and thus to move the clutch into driving relation.
Stop mechanism for controlling the movement of carrier 102, as best shown in Fig. 3, comprises a cam 124 secured to shaft 110 or to gear 112, a cam follower 125 securedto the end of a rod 126 connected to a lex'er 127 pivoted in a bracket 128 and having its opposite end in engagement with a spring tensioned plunger 129, operable in a sleeve 130, a spring 131 acting to exert upward pres sure on the plunger and thus to cause the follower 125 to be at all times in contact with cam 124. The cam is timed with the movement of carrier 102 so that the cam follower will traverse portions a and b of the of plunger 129, to overcome the momentum of the carrier after gear 112 has passed out of driving engagement with gear 113. As the cam follower traverses portion 7) of the cam, stop 133 will be lowered sufliciently to engage stop 132, stop 133 being cut away on one side as indicated in Fig.2 to permit the stop to move into register with stop 132. A spring 134 followed by the downward movement of lever 127 as the cam follower ascends to portion 0 of the cam acts to press stop 133, which is hollow at its lower end,
down over stop 132 as the stops are brought to register one with the other, thus acting hesive tape and forming the box joints are also imparted to the several mechanisms from the clutch-controlled shafts 109110 by means comprising miter gears 135, shaft 136, miter gears 137 and a cam shaft 138 these parts being best shown in Fig. 2.
As best shown in Fig. 7 a series of three cams 139, 140, and 141 are secured to shaft 138, these cams and their coacting mechanisms being further illustrated in detail Figs. 8, .9, 10 and 11. ,Operating movement for the tape feeding and tape severing mechanisms is transmitted from cam 139, the connection to the former consisting of a pitman 142 connected at its lower end to the cam disc as best shown in Fig. 7 and at its upper end to a shaft 143 by a pawl and ratchet 144, a gear 145 being supported on the op posite end of the shaft. Gear 145 meshes with a gear 146 on shaft 147 and gear 146 with a gear 148 on shaft 149, opposite sets of tape, feed rollers 150 and 151 being supported respectively on shafts 147-149 as shown in Figs. 14 and 16. The upper feed rollers 151 are preferably knurled metal rollers, the lower rollers 150 being made of any suitable yieldable material, as rubber. Gears 152 and 153 supported on shafts 147-149 near their opposite ends serve to transmit the feeding movement through intermediate gears 154 and 155 and gears 156157 supported on shafts 158159 to feed rollers 160-161 forward of feed rollers 150151. Upper feed rollers160 are preferably made of yieldable material as rubber, the lower rollers being made of'a suitable material to which moisture adheres readily, the lower roller acting in its feeding relation with the upper roller to apply to moisture to the under side of the tape as the 'same is fed forward between rollers, the
moisture being carriedup by the roller from a pan 162 in which the roller is partially submerged.
The adhesive tape which as here shown is applied to the boxes in two opposite strips 163 is supported on the machine on spools 164 and delivered to .and through the tape feeding mechanism through opposite guides 165', the guides having suitable apertures formed therein adjacent thetape feeding rollers to permit the rollers to engage the tape.
It has been found desirable in the practice of the invention to move upper rollers 160 out of pressure contact with the tape and lower rollers 161 when the machine stands at rest to prevent the moistened face of the tape adhering to the lower rollers as the adhesive dries or sets. To this end the upper rollers and the tape guides'165 are supported in a separate frame 166 )ivoted on shaft 149 and adapted to be rocked on the shaft by means of a flexible cable 167 anchored at its upper end to a plate 168 supill) ;' is moved to the position illustrated in Fig.

upwardly extended frame 192 of the head base frame 193 which is supported on an intermediate column 191 which in turn is supported on main column 101. Shaft 191 is operatively connected, as best shown in Fig. 11, to cam 110 by means of a cam rollers 156 and tapes 163 out of engagement riser 195-supported on the free end of a with lower rollers 157, the parts being restored to normal relation upon releasing of lever 119 bysuitable spring tension.
The tape serving mechanism consists as best shown in Fig. 23, of opposite reciproeating blades 170 pivoted as indicated at 171 and connected by links 17 2--17 3 to a pivoted arm 174, the links 173 being connected on opposite sides of the pivot center 175 of arm 174 thus causing the severing blades to be actuated in unison, the blades being adjustable relative to each other by means of split bearings 178. Arm 174, as here shown, is adapted to be actuated in one direction on the cutting movement of blades 170 by a chain 176 and in the return direction by a spring 177. Chain 176 is connected at its opposite end to a ivoted arm 179, which in turn is connect to a pivoted arm 180 adapted to be actuated by a cam riser 139 of cam 139.
As the tape is drawn forward from the supply spools'the free ends enter a reciproeating extension 181, best shown in Figs. 14, 15 and*16, of tape guides 165, the severed portions of the tape lying free within the guides 181 as the guides, which operate as a shuttle, are moved'over the paper box supported on one of the bases 103, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the shuttle guides 181 being open on their upper and lower sides, longitudinally of the guides, as illustrated in detail Fig. 21 to ermit of the strips of tape supported therein to be pressed down ward and applied to the box as will presently be described. The shuttle guides are supported on a horizontally reciprocating shaft 182, best shown in detail Fig. 10, which is actuated from cam 141 through a cam 'follower 183. a pivoted arm 184, pivoted arms 185186 which are adjustable angularly one relative to the other by means of a split sleeve 187 to regulate the extent, of movement. imparted to the shuttle.
,The means for delivering the tape from the shuttle guides 181 and applying the same to the box, as best shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 22, consist of a vertically reciprocating pressure head comprising opposite yieldable pads '188 adapted to pass through the longitudinally extended apertures of the shuttle guides 181, thus acting to release the strips of tape supported therein and press the same uponthe adjacent surface of the paper box.

plate being supported on a vertically extended shaft 191 slidably support/ed in'an pivoted arm 1% connected by a link 197 to a pivoted arm 198 which in turn is connected by across shaft 199 to a second arm 198. connected by a link 200 to an arm 201, the opposite end of which is secured to shaft 202 extended transversely in the head frame 192 and which has secured thereto an arm 203"op eratively connected to "shaft 191 by a bifurcated end and spaced collars 204, arm 203 having a,rearwardly extended end 205 to which a spring 206 is connected which acts to return, the pressure head to raised position following each downward reciprocatio thereof. v
The three positions of stops of the work carrier are best illustrated in the plan view of the machine in Fig. 4 by the reference characters A, B, and G. In the position A the box blanks are positioned manually, as here shown, on the supporting bases 103, the bases having opposite side retaining clips 207 which act to support the blanks by exerting pressure thereon, the sides of the box being pressed a ainst the sides of the base, the opposite sicre end sealing flaps a being folded by hand and their inner edges inserted under; a retaining clip 208. The stops of the work carrier are of sufficientduration to permit of removing a box from its supporting base, the base then in position A, and inverting the box end for end or applying another blank thereon, it being understood that the machine as here shown is adapted to form one end of the box only in a single sequence of operations applying mechanism. As the work is moved from position B to position C the end of t-he box having the outer faces of the tape exposed thereon is moved under a series of guides 209 which act to press the ta )e more firmly to the sealing flaps as the en of the box moves into engagement with a second tape moistening device 210, best shown in detail Fig.- 12, consisting of a web 211 "construeted 0 suitable material to absorb moisture, the web being operableover a series of rollers 212,213, 214, 215, 21c and 217, roller 212 actuated by means of a pawl 218 and ratcl'iet'219, being the driver for the web. As best illustrated in Fig. 1 and detail Figs. 24-25 box ejector or kick-ofi' mechanism is provided on each of the box carrying units 103 which acts to remove the box as the carrying member moves from position G to A. The means employed consist of a cam 226 secured to column 101 as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 24, a lever 227 pivoted on the carrier housmg 102 as at 229 having a cam follower 228 at its lower end adapted to engage cam 226 thus to reciprocate the lever,
the upper end of the lever being connected pivotally as at 230 to parts 231 mounted slidably on opposite sides' of the supporting bases 103. The position of levers 227 is normally substantially vertical, until the same are moved into engagement. with cam 226,
when the lower end of the lever is moved inward as illustratedin Fig. 24 and an outward movement is given to the members 231 which engage the box and kick it off the supports 103, it being understood that double end boxes are again replaced on the supporting heads after the first removal thereof thus to complete the construction of both ends of the box. A spring 232 acts to return the kick-off mechanism to normal following each operation.' The leek-off members 231 contact on their inner faces-with a series of pins 233 set in the base of box supports 103, the outer face of parts 231 being free,
'the same being kept in alignment by the tension exert-ed thereon by springs 232.
Having described our invention we claim: 1. A box making machine including in combination. a rotatable work carriercon'lprising a plurality of box supporting units each adapted to have a box positioned thereon and to move the same upon rotation of the carrier to successive stop positions, each unit being adapted in one of said positions to have a box positioned thereon, means in the next position of stop of said unit for applying double-faced adhesive tape to folded portions of the box, means interposed between said last named position and the second stop of said unit acting to moisten the exposed face'of the tape, other means acting to fold other portions of the box over the tape and said folded portions, and means operable under pressure in the third position of stop of said unit to effecta-dhesion between the folded portions of 'the box and the sealing element.
2. A box making machine including in combination, a rotatable work carrier comprising a plurality of box supporting units each adapted to have a box positioned thereon and to move the same upon rotation of the carrier to successive stop positions, each unit I being adapted in one of said positions to have a box positioned thereon, means in a subsequent position of stop of said units for applying double-faced adhesive tape to folded portions of the box, means interposed between said last named position and a later position of stop of said unit actin to moisten the exposed face of the tape, ot er means acting to fold other portions of the box over the tape and said-folded portions, and means operable under pressure in a still later position of stop of said unit to effect adhesion between the folded portions of the box and the sealing element.
3. A box making machine including in combination, a rotatable work carrier comprising a plurality of box supporting units each adapted to have a box positioned therefolded portions. and means operable under pressure in a st ll later position of stop of said unit to effect adhesion between the folded portions of the and the sealing the carrier to successive stop positions. each unit being adapted in one of said positions to have a box posltloned thereon, means 1,6f34,885 a s operable in a subsequent position of stop of said unit, and coacting with a supply roll of double faced adhesive tape to feed the tape forward, to moisten and sever the portion of tape fed forward and to apply the severed portion to folded portions of the box, means interposed between said last position and a later position of stop unit acting to moisten the exposed face of the tape, other means acting to fold other portions of thebox over the tape and said folded portions,
and means operable under pressure in a still later position of stop of said unit to effect adhesion between the folded portions of the box and "the sealing element.
5. A box making machine including in.
combination, a rotatable work carrier com-, prising a plurality of box supporting units each adapted to have a box positioned thereon and to move the same upon rotation of the carrier to successive stop positions, each unit being adapted in one of said positions to have a box positioned thereon, means operable in a subsequent position of stop of said unit and coacting with a supply roll of double-faced adhesive tape to feed 'the tape'forward, to moisten and sever the portion of tape fed forward and to apply the same under pressure to folded portions of the box.
6. In the art of-making paper boxes the herein described method of production con sisting in causing a box to be moved successively into positions for a sequence of operations, in effecting the application of doublefaced adhesive tape severed to conform to a dimension of the box to folded portions of the box in one of said positions, in moist-j box folding and pressure mechanisms 10- eningethe tape and folding other portions of the box thereover between certain of said positions, and in effecting adhesionbetwcen said folded portions and the tape in another of said positions; 1
7. In the art of making paper boxes the herein described method of production consisting in causing a box to be moved successively into positions for a sequence of operations, in effecting the application of doublefaced adhesive tape severed to conform to a dimension of the box to folded portions of the box in one of said positions, in moistening the tape and folding other portions of the box thereover-and in effecting adhesion under pressurerbetween the fol( ed portions and said tape in the final position of said operations.
' 8. A paper box making machine including in combination, mechanism for feeding and applying an adhesive element, mechanism for moistening the applied adhesive element, box folding and pressure mechanisms located in fixed relation one relative to another and arranged for a sequence of operations, and box-carrying means adapted to move a paper box into coactive relation with said mechanisms whereby'to effect application of the adhesive element to folded portions of the box, moistening the adhesive, folding another portion of the box thereover and causing adhesion under pressure between said folded portions. p
9. A paper box making machine includin in combination, mechanism for feeding an applying an adhesive element, mechanismv for moistening the applied adhesive element, folding and pressure. mechanism arranged one relative to another for box forming operations, and a box carrying means adapted to move a paper box into coactive relation with said mechanisms whereby to effect application of the adhesive element to folded portions of the box, moistening the adhesive, Holding another portion of the box there over and causing adhesion undenpressure betweensaid folded portions; 7 10. A paper box making machine including in combination, mechanism for feeding and applying an adhesive element, mechanism for moistening the applied adhesive element, folding and pressure mechanisms arranged one relative to another for box forming operations, and box carrying means adapted to move a box into coactive relation with said mechanisms whereby to effect application of the tape to efolded portions of'the box-moistening of an exposed surface of said tape, folding of another portion of the box thereover and causing adhesion under pressure between said foldedportions.
11. A paper box making machine including in combination, mechanism for feeding and applying an adhesive element, mechanism for moistening the applied adhesive element,
over and causing adhesion under pressure I between said folded portions.
12. A paper box making machine including in combination, adhesive applying mechanism, moistening mechanism, folding and I pressure mechanisms arranged in a connnon circumferential plane for a sequence of box forming operations, and a rotatable ,box carrier having a plurality of box supporting units disposed in said plane and adapted to be moved into stop positions relative to said mechanisms, and to coact therewith to effect successively the application of the adhesive element to folded portions of he box, moistening the adhesive, folding another portion of the box thereover and causing adhesion under pressure between said folded portions.
13. A paper box making machine including in combination, adhesive applying mechanism, moistening mechanism, folding and pressure mechanisms arranged in a common circumferential plane for a sequence of box forming operations, and a rotable box carrier having a plurality of box supporting units disposed in said plane and adapted to be moved intermittently into stop positions with different box supporting units in operative relation with said mechanisms whereby to effect different forming operations simultaneously upon a plurality of boxes.
14. A paper box making machine including in combination, supporting frame, a drive shaft operable in said frame, adhesive tape applying mechanism, tape moistening mechanism, box folding and box sealing mechanisms spaced one from another and relatively fixed in a common circumferential plane, a rotatable box carrier geared to said shaft and having a plurality of box supporting units operable in said plane, each adapted to move a box successively into operative relation with said mechanisms whereby to form and seal the box.
15. A paper box making machine including in combination, supporting frame, a drive shift operable in said frame, adhesive tape applying mechanism, tape moistening mechanism, box folding and box sealing mechanisms spaced one from another andrelatively fixed in a common circumferential plane, and a rotatable box carrier geared to said shaft intermittently and having a plurality of box supporting units operable step by step in the plane of said mechanisms into stop positions in operative relations therewith whereby the boxes supported on all of said units will be subjected simultaneously to box forming operations and will each be formed and sealed upon completion of the sequence of operations thereon.
16. A box making machine including in combination, adhesive tape applying mechanism, a box carrier adapted to move a box into operative relation with said mechanism, said mechanism comprising means to support a roll of tape, tape feeding and moistening mechanism, tape severing mechanism, means acting to dispose the tape over a portion of the box, and pressure means acting to apply the tape adhesively to said portions, means acting subsequently to fold another portion of the box over said applied tape and pressure means acting to effect adhesion therebetween.
17. A box making machine including in combination, adhesive tape applying mechanism, a box carrier adapted to move a box into operative relation with said mechanism, said mechanism comprising means to moisten and feed the tape forward from a supply source, tape severing mechanism, means to assesses advance the severed portion of the tape over a portion of the box, and means acting to apply the tape adhesively to said portion, means acting subsequently to fold another portion of the box over said applied tape and pressure means acting to effect adhesion therebetween.
18. A box making machine including in combination, adhesive tape applying mechanism, a box carrier adapted't'fimove a box into operative relation with said mechanism, said mechanism comprising tape moistening and feeding mechanism acting to feed the tape from a supply source, tape severing mechanism, means operable to dispose the severed tape over a portion of the box, means operable to apply the tape adhesively to said portion, and means operable at times to release the tape between said feeding devices;
means actin subsequently to fold another portion of the box oversaid applied tape and pressure means acting to effect adhesion therebetween.
19. A box making machine including in combination, adhesive tape applying mechanism, a box carrier adapted to move a box into operative relation with said mechanism,
said mechanism comprising tape moistening and feeding mechanism, tape severing mechanism, a reciprocating member acting to re ceive the severed portions of tape and to dispose the same over a portion of a box, pressure means 0 erabl'e' to apply the several tape adhesive y to said portion, means acting subsequently to fold another portion of the box over said applied tape and pressure means acting to effect adhesion therebetween.
20. A box making machine including in combination, adhesive tape applying mechanism, a box carrier adapted to move a box into operative relation with said mechanism, said mechanism comprising tape moistening and feeding mechanism, tape severing mechanism, a reciprocating member acting to receive the severed portions of tape and to dispose the same over a portion of the box a reciprocating pressure head adapted to engage the tape in said tape disposing mechanism and to press the same upon said portion of the box, means acting subsequently to fold another portion of the box over said applied tape and pressure means acting to effect adhesion therebetween.
21. A box making machine including in combination, adhesive tape applying mechanism, a box carrier adapted to move a box into operative relation with said mechanism, said mechanism comprising duplicate tape feeding and moistening means including guides for a plurality of strips of adhesive tape, tape severing means, and means for applying the severed portions of the tape adhesively on a portion of the box supported on said carrier, means to adjust said duplicate mechanisms laterally, one of the other and pressure means acting to effect adhesion therebetween.
