1,624,528 PATENT omer..
EDWARD H. BRUNE, or sT. LoUIs, MIssoiJai.
MAGNETIC Application filed January The present invention consists of a magnetic separator and is designed as an improvement over my prior Patent Number 1,539,640 issued May 26, 1925.
r An object of the invention is to provide a separator of this character which is especially adapted for use inthe removal of metallic elements, such as broken picks, bolts, washers, etc., from coal without .i crushing the lumps of coal, yet positively removing even the minutest metallic particle which may` have found its way into the Coal during mining or subsequent to having been mined.
, A coordinate object of the invention is to utilize a magnetic cell of considerable density which may be made in sections to facilitate assemblage and transportation and which is capable of exerting sufficient magneticinfluence to pick up metallicl bodies of relatively large size and great` weight.
Other lobjects of the inventionwill be apparent from the following description of the present preferred forms of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is alongitudinal sectional View of a magnetic separator constructed in accordance with the present invention illustrating 3"* its application;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view Aofthe batlle used in the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary side elevational vie'w of the separator drum and a 15 sectional view of a slightly modified forni of battle; and
Fig. l a cross sectional view of the separator.
ln the drawings, for the purpose of illustrating the application of the present invention a supporting structure 5 is shown which has a pair of standards 6 mounted thereabove in which the ends of a shaft 7 are revolubly mounted. One end of the shaft 7 is equipped with a pulley 5 which is adapted for the reception of ay power belt for the purpose of rotating the shaft 7. A pulley wheel 9 is rotatably mounted on the support 5 and has a conveyor-belt 10 trained thereabout, the belt being arranged to travel beneath the shaft 7 Loosely mounted on the shaft 7 is a magnetic body generally designated 11 which in the present instance consists of a series of solid segments 12 which are secured together so as to remain in contiguity and are ansEPAnAToR.
2s; 192e. Serin No. 843389.
chored on one of the standards 6, as indicated at 13. lt is desired thatthe magnetic segments 12 be so positioned that their concave faces 111 are at one side, as shown in Fig. 4l of the drawings for apurpose hereinafter set forth. A drum or shell 15 made of brass or like material is revolubly mounted on the magnetic body 11 and is fixed to the shaft 7 in any desired manner so that rotation of the shaft imparts corresponding movement t'o the drum. In Fig. 1 of the drawings the drum is indirectly connected to the shaft by virtue of a baffle 16 which is sleeved on the shaft 7 and is fiXedly secured thereto, the baffle in turn being lixedly secured to the drinn, as indicated at 17. Consequently, as the shaft 7 rotates, the baille 16 and drum 15are concurrently rotated. The baffle in the present instance is shown to be of semi-elliptical shape in crosssection and has the marginal edge thereof projected over one end of the drum 15. By
preference, the drum tapers and the ballie' enc-ases the smaller end of the drum so that lumps of coal and other materials conveyed by the belt will be deflected to prevent contact thereof with the magnetic body 11. Moreover, the bale is designed to deflect lumps of coal to the sides of the drum eliminating the possibility of the lumps being ground beneath the drum. The belt is of sufficient width to permit the lumps to be carried along the sides of the drum and ultimately dumped over the pulley wheel 9. The larger metallic particles will be taken up by the smaller end of the drum while the smaller particles will be taken up by the larger end of the drum which operates in close proximity to the upper surface of the belt 10.
To eliminate the possibility of the drum being depressed inwardly at the concave side of the magnetized body 11, suitable bracing elements 18 are provided. These elements may consist of metal bars secured to the concave face of the magnetic body 11, as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 4:.
lf desired, the drum 15 may be directly connected to the shaft 7, as indicated at 19, and where this form of invention is ernployed the baffle 16 is fiXedly connected to the standard 6, as indicated at 20.
' In use of this device the drum 15 is rotated by the application of power to the pulley 8. The materials, such as coal, or the like, are deposited on the belt 10 and permitted to niente vill be intercepted by the drum. The elements or particles thuisy intercepted are ,':uried up over the top of the drum. but permitted to gravitate theret'roin when the part ot the drinn carrying the metallic elemente or particles reaches the e ineave side nl the inaggnetined body ll. At thie1 par tieular point the drnin is: demagnelized and le ooimeduently renioved oit any .metallic bodieeM1 althoughj it' deeired or `found neverwieorvv, a iafraper, euch as mind in my leaned 4l-)iitent Number 1,589,040, may be used.
llv'bile I have herein described 01115l the preferred forms ond a preferred use olfthie invention, I :un aware that the inventimi is napable ot other inodilieatione and isn-exeptible ol a variety ol new within the saropo o" the rlaims hereto appended.
What is claimed is:
l. ln combination with n movable eoal rari-ying; belt, a nnignetie Separator includ ing' a drum momited above the belt and equipped `with a baille to dive rt lumps ol `coal away troni lhe drum.
:3. ln eonibination with n movable eoal carrying;- belt, n magnetic Separator ineludinga drum mounted above the belt and :i baille positioned ir advance ot' the drum to divert lumps oi' eoal to the sides of the drum.
3. In eoinbiinition with a movable belt for carrying nniterials, a magnetic: separator for removing; metallic: bodies troni said mato vials including :i inngnetized drum mounted above the belt and engageable with said nniterizde, und a baille mounted adjacent the drum to prevent materiale 'trom eoiitae'lzing with the end of the latter.
Al. ln combination, vwith a eoal carrying beltg a nnigjnelie separator inr'ludingg a taperi in; drum rotatably mounted above the belt and having' ita loligl'itudiind arri-i arrangml parallel to the longitmlinal anni ol? the belt, and a baille carried by the snialler end of the drum to deflect the (foal 'from contacting with field end.
Si. A magnetic separator ineludingjr a drinn :ind power shalt extendirre,r through :raid drum and Secured thereto, and a niaginelie body mounted, on the Shaft Within the drum and provided with a conravity and ln'nee elements mounted in :mid eoneavity and engaged with smid body and drinn to prevent depression of the drum into the oon favily.
ln testimony whereolI .L a'lix my eignature.
