TOOL GRINDING MACHINE Filed May 22. 1922 6 q Jz I I i 22-1 I I I i 'mvenfo, Slang/31s ##orney,
Patented Apr. 12, 1927.
v UNITED STATES SIMON LANGLAIS, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
roon earnnrne MACHINE.
Application filed May 22,
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient machine for grinding the cutting faces of tools particularly those used in the formation of tread surfaces of railway car wheels, the desired shape or formation of the cutting edge being exactly reproduced on one tool or on a number of tools.
For full comprehension however of my invention, reference must be had to the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein:
Figure l is a plan view of my improved machine Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof; and
Figure 3 is an end elevation.
Referring to the drawings a stationary base member of rectangular form is indicated at l and is provided with lugs 2 on its opposite ends by which it may be bolted to the supporting frame of the machine. The top of this base member has a longitudinal guideway 3 and a recess t at its front. This recess is disposed parallel to the guideway and is adapted to receive a templet plate 5 the latter being secured in position therein by bolts 7 which engage notches 6 in the opposite ends of the plate. The front edge of this templet determines the shape of the edge to be formed on the tool.
A carriage 8 is mounted upon the base and is slidable longitudinally within the guideway 3, the means for causing the longitudinal movement consisting of a connecting rod 9 disposed parallel to the direction of movement of the carriage, and pivotally connected at one end to the latter and at its opposite end as at 10 to amanually operable lever 11, the latter being fulcrmned upon a block 12 secured upon the supporting frame. The top of the longitudinally movable carriage is provided with a transverse guideway 13 in which is slidably mounted a transversely movable second carriage 14. the latter having a forward projection 15 from which is suspended a fixed downwardly extending shaft 16 rotatably carrying a roller 17. The latter is maintained in yielding engagement with the irregular face of the tamplet by springs 18 each of which is connected at one end to the carriage 14: and at its opposite end to a lug 19 carried bythe carriage 8.
The tool or tools to be ground are firmly 1922. Serial No. 582,764.
secured upon the carriage 14 by brackets 7 other flange extending upwardly therefrom, v
the free end of each bracket having a slot 41 curved concentrically to the pivot 40 and a bolt 42 passed through the slot and screwed into the top of the carriage. The tool is clamped in position bearing against the vertical flange of the bracket and lying fiat upon the carriage by bolts 43.
The grinding element is indicated at 22. Operation.
The operation of this machine is as fol lows A tool having been secured in position upon one of the brackets the grinding element is set in motion and the carriage 8 moved longitudinally by lever 11. During this longitudinaly movement the roller 17 is caused to follow the irregular face of the templet and the tool is consequently so moved relatively to the grinding element that it will be ground to a shape corresponding with that of the templet.
It is important that the cross section of the grinding face of the emery wheel, which is of semi-circular form, be of corresponding diameter with the roller actuated by the templet, and it is also necessary that the templet be formed to coact properly with the particular diameter of roller.
"What I claim is as follows 1. A grinding machine consisting of a supporting frame; a stationary base member fixed upon the supporting frame and having in its top a longitudinal guideway and a re cess, the recess being located at the front of the member; a templet mounted within said recess and disposed parallel to the guideway the front face of the templet being irregular; a grinding element located adjacent the rear side of the base member; a carriage sup ported upon the base member and movable longitudinally within the guideway; said carriage having a transverse guideway in its top; a second carriage mounted upon the first mentioned carriage and movable transversely in the transverse guideway, the said second carriage having a fixed downwardly extending shaft; a roller rotatably mounted upon said shaft and adapted to bear against the irregular face of the templet; means for yieldingly maintaining the roller in engage ment with the templet; means for moving the first mentioned carriage longitudinally, and means mounted upon the second carriage for detachably securing a tool thereon; said last mentioned means consisting of a device, means rigidly securing the device to the top of the carriage, and a clamping device for clam ing the tool in contact with the said rigid y mounted device.
2. A grinding machine consisting of a supporting frame; a stationary base member fixed upon the supporting frame and having in its top a longitudinal guideway and a recess, the recess being located at the front of the member; a tenlplet mounted within said recess and disposed parallel to the guideway, the front face of the templet being irregular; a grinding element located adjacent the rear side of the base member; a carriage supported upon the base member and movable longitudinally within the guide Way; said carriage having a transverse guideway in its top; a second carriage mounted upon the first mentioned carriage and movable transversely in the transverse guideway, the said second carriage having a fixed downwardly ext-ending shaft; a roller rotatably mounted upon said shaft and adapted to bear against the irregular face of the templet; means for yieldingly maintaining the roller in engagement with the templet; means for moving the first mentioned carriage longitudinally, and means mounted upon the second carriage for detachably securing a tool thereon; said last mentioned means consisting of an angular bracket pivoted at one end upon the top of the trans verse carriage with one flange lying flat thereon and the other flange extending upwardly therefrom; a slot in the free end of said bracket and a bolt extending through said slot and screwed into the top of the carriage; and means for detachably clamping a tool in position bearing upon the top of the carriage and adjacent the vertical flange of the bracket.
Signed at Montreal, Quebec, Canada this 24th day of April, 1922.
