Description
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
SAMUEL KLAHR, OF REAMSTOVVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
BORING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,241, dated December 16, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KLAHR, of Reamstown, county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Boring-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specifica-tion.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of the several devices for boring posts and'pump stocks which I call the improved portable boring machine.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe'its construction and operation.
A is a square frame support-ing the devices for boring posts.
B is an extension frame, attached to frame A Which supports the devices for Y boring pump stocks, or any long pieces of timber, lengthwise.
C is a railway carriage resting on the top of frame A and carries the auger D.
E is a pulley on the shaft of auger D.
F is a lever attached to carriage C by which the carriage and auger D are moved forward while boring, or at any time withdrawn from the lumber or piece bored.
Gr a horizontal and adjustable platform to which the post or piece of lumber is attached, and which is moved crosswise, the required distance to regulate the holes apart. The platform G has teeth underneath which arc operated on by a pinion H, which pinion H is moved by the crank I.
J is a drum on the shaft K secured to the frame A by journal boxes. The drum J causes the auger D to revolve by a band L passing around it and the pulley E.
On the shaft K is a pulley M which is put in motion by a band O passing around it and the main driving wheel P. The carriage Q (on the frame B) which carries the pump stock to the auger D is attached to an endless chain R which passes around pulleys S and T. These pulleys are of three sizes, and the endless chain is placed over the larger or smaller pulleys according to the speed required. The pulleys T have projecting pins U which catch hold of the links or apertures of the chain R, preventits slipping, and assist in regulating its motion. The whic receives its motion from a vertical endless screw IV on the upper end of vertical shaft X. This vertical shaft X has a pinion Y at its lower end. An endless screw Z on the horizontal shaft K gears into the pinion Y on the vertical X, and the endless screw IV gears into the Vpinion V and thus the pulleys T receive their motion.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The arrangement and combination of the shaft X endless screw Z, pinion and pulleys T as operating on an endless chain and railway carriage for the purpose of boring pump stocks as described.
2. I also claim the shape and construction of the pinion V and pulleys T with pins U, solid on one'shaft, for the purpose herein set forth.
3. I do not claim the combination and arrangement of the drum J with the devices for operating the carriage C, but what I do claim as my invention is the combination and arrangement of the drum J with the devices for operating bot-h of the carriages C and Q for boring posts and pump stocks forming a neat portable boring machine substantially as herein set forth.
SAIIIUEL KLAHR.
