BAFFLE15LATE IN vanvn cnAMBER.
Application filed July 17,

For an understanding of the invention reference is made to the following description and to the drawings which accompany the specification.
In the drawing;
Fig. 1 is a transverse section through a part of an internal combustion engine having an embodiment of my invention incorporated therein Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bafitle plate.
Referring by reference characters to the drawing: Numeral 1 1s used to designate a motor block having as a part thereof a cylinder-3 and the upper portion'of the crank case 5. lVithin the latter are bearings for a cam shaft, one of such bearings being shown at 7. The shaft 9 rotating in said bearings. has cams 11 to reciprocate tappet rods 13 in guides 15, thereciprocation of the rods moving the valves 17 as well understood. The valve guide 15 is secured in position by a bolt 10 threaded into the engine block and extended diagonally through the guide.
Lubricating oil is likely to escape from the crank case through the tappet openings 18 and around the lower part of the guide. Also oil overflows from between the tappet rods and the guides to the upper surface of To restore this escaping oil I make use of alongitudinal channel 21 formed between the outwardly and downwardly sloping upper wall 22 of the crank case and a marginal ledge 23. From this channel openings 25 lead into the crank case for restoring any oil which collects in the channel 21.
To prevent the escape of oil through openings 18 to as great an extent as possible,
there is used a battle plate 27 which is elongated and has openings 29 of a sue to receive the guides and also openings 31, to register with openings 25. A recess 33 may be 1926. Serial No. 123,122.
' i zana formed in the engine block to receive the inner end of'the bafiie plate. Preferably portions are cut from the baflie plateas at 35 communicatingwith openings 29 to facilitate assembly. I
The bafile plate is preferably formed from a sheet of resilient material. It will be observed that its upper surface is engaged by a lower surfacef37 of the guide. Owing to the position of the bolt in the guide. the
guide has a downward movement as well as an inward movement when being assembled. The downward component is utilized to compress the resilient baiile plate so that it tightly engages the walls of the crank case opening and reduces to a minimum the escape of oil.
The valve chamber may be covered by the usual plate 37 and securing bolt 39.
I claim:
1. In an engine, a casing having a longitudinal channel upon its upper surface, there being an opening from said channel into said casing, the casing having a tappet opening and a tappet guide associated therewith, means associated with said guide and closing said opening to restrict the escape of fluid.
2. ln'an engine, a casing having atappet opening, a tappet guide adjacent said opening, a bafile positioned over said opening and engaged by said guide, means to assemble said guide in position and simultaneously depress sald baffle into engagement with the casing adjacent the guide opening.
3. In an engine, a casing having a tappet opening, a tappet guide adjacent the open ing, a battle surrounding the guide to close the opening, means associated with said tappet guide to draw the guide into position and to depress the battle into engagement with the casing wall about the tappet opening. V j
4. For association with the tappet guides of an engine, a battle having a plurality of openings to encircle the guides and close the openings therefor in the engine case and a second series of small openings to register with drain openings in the engine'case.
5. An engine casing having a valve tappet opening and a drain opening in its upper wall, a valve tappet guide adjacent said first mentioned opening, a baflie completing with said guide the closure of said opening, the baffle having a second opening for registration with the said drain opening.
