CATO HAARBERG, or oHIoAeo, ILtInoIs.
PACKAGE CARRIER.
Application filed August 28, 1924, Serial No. 734,762. Renewed February 16, 1927.
My invention relates to a carrier for boxes and other packages, and particularly to that type of carrier involving means to grip the box or package and handles adapted to be grasped by one person or by two persons.
The general object of my present invention is to provide a device of the indicated character improved in various particulars 0 especially with respect to a means for gripping the package to the end that said gripping means may be grasped by one person tor carrying a small package or conveniently grasped by two persons in tandem for the carrying of a larger package and in either event will cause the box or package to be firmly gripped.
More specifically, the invention has for an object to provide a device of the indicated 0 purpose having increased eiiiciency and characterized by simplicity o't construction as well as convenience of manipulation and control to grip or release the package.
The nature of my invention and its distinguishing features and. advantages: will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of two examples of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a package carrier embodying my invention showing the same applied to a packing case for the carrying; oi the same;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the package carrier in use;
lligurc 3 is a fragmentary plan View showing a modification employing a double hook instead of a single one.
In carrying out my invention in practice in accordance with the illustrated example two similar yokes designated generally by the numeral are provided to be disposed at each end of a package or box to be carried. Each yoke 10 has a cross handle 11 adapted to be grasped by the hand for the carrying of the package. The two yokes are connected by a chain 12 or equivalent flexible element. The chain is secured at one end to a cross bar 13 on one of the yokes 10. To the cross bar 13 of the other yoke 10 is secured one of the two chain links 1 1 carrying a snap hook 15 which is adapted to engage one of the links in the chain 12 to vary the total length of the flexible connection between the yokes 10 according to the size of the package or box to be carried.
A grab hook 16 is provided in association with each hook 10, said hook being pivoted at one end as at 17 to the yoke 10 between the ends thereof and adapted to extend laterally outward to grip the adjacent end of the box or package A.
vVith the above described device the total effective length of the package carrier is made to accord with the size of the particular package or box to be carried, this being effected through the medium of the snap hook 15 engaging the given link in the chain 12. The device having been adjusted to suit a given package, said device is laid on the top of the package or box and the hooks 16 are disposed adjacent to the ends of the package. The handles 11 are now grasped and in doing so the inner ends of the yokes 10 will act as fulcrums for the yokes so that the hooks 16 are driven into the ends of the package or box. If the package is small. one person may grasp both handles 11 and carry the package. On the other hand if the package is large two persons in tandem may grasp the respective handles 11 and conveniently carry the package, the engagement of the hooks with the package being assured.
In the form shown in Figure 3 a doub e hook 116 is pivoted as at 117 to a yoke 110 corresponding essentially with the yoke 10, said yoke being connected with a chain .112 corresponding essentially with the chain 12.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated examples constitute practical embodiments 01. my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A package carrier including end yokes each provided with a handle at the outer ends thereof, a connection between the yokes and connected with the latter at the inner ends thereof, and grab hooks pivoted to the yokes between the ends of said yokes and adapted to be disposed at the outer ends of a package adjacent to the handles, the inner ends of said yokes being adapted to bear upon the top of the package or box being carried to constitutena fulcrum for'forcin'g the hooks into the package with the lifting of the handles.
2. A package carrier comprisinga pair of yokes each having a cross bar at the inner ends thereof, a flexible connection between the cross bars and the respective okes handes on the yokes atthe-outer ends, and grab hooks pivoted to the yokes and adapted to engagetheendsef a packageoi' box beneath 10 saidhandles, the inner ends of the yokes being adapted to constitute fulerums when the hooks are disposed at the ends of the package or box to cause the hooks to he forced into the material of the package or 15 box with the lifting of the handle.
