the top of which a small metallic guide clip 16 is rigidly but detachably secured, preferably by a wood screw 17. The front end of the guide bar 12 is notched or reduced at its under side to form a top front end extension 18, to the bottom of which another Inetallic guide clip 19 is rigidly but d-etachably secured, preferably by a wood screw '20. The two guide clips 16 and 20 project from the same side of the guide bar and work in the guide groove 15 of the guide bar 13. The guide bar 12 is shown as ri idly attached to the sliding board or top section 11 by wood screws 21 and 22 applied as best shown in Fig. 4, by reference to which it will also be noted that, when the board 11 1s in normal position, the projecting rear end of the guide bar 12 is forcedonto the beveled upper edge of an abutment block 23. lVhen the rear end of the bar 12 is thus forced onto the abutment block 23, the front edge of the board 11 will be pressed tightly down upon'the front rail of the frame 6 and held so that it will not be raised from said frame even if the table be lifted by application of power to the front edge of said board 11. In'connection with the guide bar 12 and other parts described, a latch should be provided for normally holding the slidable top section 11 in the position shown in the drawmgs, Figs. 1 and 4:; andas an important feature of this invention, I combine a latch bar for such purpose, with the guide bar 12 and utilize the same as a supplemental guide or extension of said guide bar. My invention provides an extremely simple and highly eihcient combination table and writing desk adapted for use in the guest rooms of hotels and various other places; and, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings:

1 is a perspective view, showing the complete combined table and writing desk adjusted for use as an ordinary table;

The table has a rectangular box-like body made up of a rectangular marginal frame 6 and a bottom 7 which bottom, in the particular illustration, is not extended completely to the back of the table but is terminated short thereof and connected to a transverse partition board 8, the ends of which are rigidly attached to the side rails of the frame 6. At its corners, the frame 6 has rigidly attached supporting legs 9 of any suitable design.

The table top. is made up of a fixed board or section 10 and a shiftable board or section 11, the latter being preferably considerably wider than the former. The fixed section 10 is rigidly secured to the frame ,6 by screws, nails or otherwise. The shiftable top section or board 11, at its central portion, is rigidly secured to the solid part 12 of a guide arm that works slidably through a notch in the transverse partition 8 and slides freely in a guideway formed between parallel rails 13 and 14: that are rigidly secured to the partition 8, to the bottom boards 7. and to the front rail of the frame 6. The. rail 13 is thicker than the rail 14: and is formed with a guide groove 15, for an important purpose. The rear end of the guide bar 12 is notched to afford a reduced rear end extension, to

out quite thin as it approaches its junction with the. main bar 12 and is so formed that it will act as a spring and normally press the free end of the latch bar 23 downward or board 11, as best shown in Fig. 4. The extreme free end of the latch bar 23 is projected to form a finger piece 23, and just inward of said finger piece, afford a latch shoulder 23. The undersurface of the bar 23 gradually rounded or cut so that when the body 11 has been'drawn out,'as shown in Fig. 2, and its end forced rearward or to closed position, the said latch latch-forming portion 23 of the said bar is away from the front edge portion of the it is notched to m theframework ofthe table.

Obviously, when the'board 11 is slid to normal position, it will be there locked by the latch bar 23. When the board 11 is to be drawn out, as shown in Fig. 2, the lock shoulder 23 may be readily raised into engagement with the notch 2i by pressingupward onthe fingerpiece or knob 23* of the latch lever 23 and then, of course, the said board 11 may be freely drawn out to the position stated. Throughout all of'these a djustments, the board 1 1 will be held in'a'true horizontal position 'by engagement of the clips '16 and 19 with the guide groove 15.

The notch 24 is only of such width that the latch bar 23 will slide freely :therethrough and, hence,' tl1e-said latch bar 23 affords a guide for holding the extensible table board 11 for true sliding movements. In fact, with the arrangement described, the combined bars 1223 act asa'continuousguide bar or rail for holding the table top 11 fortrues'liding movements, and this guide bar extends not only under the entire board -11 but far to the rear'thereof. The latch bar 23, therefore, performs the double function of latch bar and guide bar, and the bar 12 forms a double function ofguide bar under sliding operations and as a board-depressing bar when engaged with the abutment 23.

The location oftheguide'bar and guiding means for the slidable table-top section or sides, round, or oval. As shown, only oneof the sections of the table top is made slidable,

but thesameiprinciple of 'construction might be appliedto both of the table top sections. 'Of-c'oursa'i'f desired, an extension or filling board maybe used to fill'in the space between the separated top sections 10 and 11, thereby adapting the table to be usedas an extension table. .If, at any time it shouldbe desirable to remove the extensible board 11 from the bar 12-23WOL1ltl come'oif with said board 11. -As is evident, the screw 20 can be reached by a screw driver inserted upward through the bottom of the guide channel formed between the guide bars 13 and 14,

while the screw 7 can be reached from the top by the screw driver when the board llis drawn out as shown in Fig. 2.

lVhat I claim is:

'1. The combination with a table frame having a bar guide, of atabletop including a slidable board, aiguide bar secured to said slidable board and working in said guide and holding said board for true sliding movements, and-a latch bar attached to the under side of said slidable=board in "alignment with said guide bar and constituting a supplemental guide and having interlocking engagement with said table frame to hold said slidable board in normal position.

2. The combination with a table frame formed with a centrally located guide channel and provided witha table -top,'one. section of which is slidable, andaguide bar secured to the under side of said slidable board and working in said guide channel, said zguide bar having a forward vertically resilient extension operatingas an auxiliary guide and having means for engagement withsaid ltable frame .to latch said slidable board in normal position.

3. .The combination with a table frame formed with acentrallylocatedguide channel and provided with a :table top, one section of which is slidable, anda guide bar secured to the under side of said slidable board and working-in said guide channel, said -guide bar having a forward vertically resilient extension operating as an auxiliary guide and having means for engagement with said table frame to latch said slidable board in normal position, the said guide and resilient extension being formed integral-and of wood "and the extended portion thereof being inclined for camming action on the table frame under movements of said slidableboard from. extended to normal position.

4. The combination with a table frame provided with centrally located bars spaced to a fl'ord'a guide channel with an open bottom, at least one thereofhaving a longitudinalguide-groove, of a table top, at least "one section of which is slidable into a position in which its major portion extends outward of said frame, and a guide bar secured to the under side of said slidabletop section and provided with detachable front and rear detachable guide clips working in said'guide groove and holding the table top against vertical movements, said clips being detachable from said guide bar, the one through the opcn bottom of the guide channel and "the other through the open top thereof,

when said slidable top section is extended.

5. The combination with a table frame formed with a central guide channel, of a table top, at least one section of which is slidable, and a guide bar secured to the under side of the slidable top section, projecting rearwardly therefrom and working in said guide channel and having a vertically resilient forward extension operating as an auxiliary guide and having interlocking engagement with said frameto latch said slidable top section in normal position.

6. The combination with a table frame formed with a guide channel, of a. table top, at least one section of which is slidable, and a guide bar secured to the under side of the slidable top section, projecting rearwardly therefrom and working in said guide channel and having a vertically resilient forward extension operating as an auxiliary guide and having interlocking engagement with said frame to latch said slidable top section in normal position.
