Application: filed December Thisinvention relates generally toaward robe trunk construction. p v 1 In the manufacture of wardrobe trunks difiicultyhas-been found insuccessfully applying the wardrobe feature to trunks, of the" steamer type. As heretofore constructed hunks, including those of the wardrobe type, have been provided with ahingejoint "extending along one of the longer sides .so
that the, trunk, as. a whole,- had to be turned up on; one end tothereby bring the wardrobe part ;into ,a vertical or upright position.
The requirement of turningthe entire trunk to an upright position. is particularly objejctionablewith trunks of the steamer-"type which, because of the restricted; space instaterooms, are placed beneath a berth when notinuse, thereby entailing the handling of the trunk whenever it is desired to have access to the contents thereof, 7
A general object of the present invention is to provide a wardrobe trunk construction which will be free from the objectionable features referred to.
The invention includes a trunk construe tion in which the cover section is hinged across one end-to the body portion and is arranged to provide a wardrobe compartment. With this arrangement it is necessary to lift only the cover portion of the trunk to erect position to provide a wardrobe structure and, because of the light weight of the contents, this can readily be,
accomplished.
Other features of the invention will be hereinafter referred to.
In the drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of the invention has been selected for illustration,
Fi'gnre 1 1s a view in side elevation of a wardrobe trunk embodying the invent-ion and shown in open or functioning condition.
Figure 2 is a View in front elevation of the trunk shown in Figure 1,
of the trunk in closed condition.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the compartment portion of a trunk in raised position and the wardrobe portion in lowered position. v
Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description of the invention, a trunk is shown of the steamer type which includes a body or campartment portion 10 and a combined cover and wardrobe portion 11. A feature of the invention resides in a pivs, 1925;;- Serial No. 72 911.
oted orhinged connection of the parts .10
and 11 along one end as at 12as contrasted I with the ordinary trunk construction in which thehinged joint is placed along one of the-longer sides of the article.
The cover or'wardrobe portion 11 of the trunk has substantially the'sanie depth as the compartment portion 10 and-is pro-- vided with suitable equipment or accessories forsupporting garments placed therein in.
a suspended condition. For thispurpose a series of garments hangers 13 1s mounted in the'upper portion of the wardrobe section, a hinged rack member 1 1 being'provideg. for
the; support of the hangers.
A removable bar,or' slat member 115 is preferably provided intermediate "the ends .of'the wardrobe section and located adjacent the open side thereof for the purpose of. holding the garments in place within the.
container'section 11. Y
I An additional retaining member in the form of atrod 16 is pivoted at one end to gage an eye member 20 in the body portion l0 and to serve as a support or brace for the cover section 11 when in raised position.
It will be seen that the provision ofa wardrobe section hinged along one end facilitates the raising of the wardrobe section to a vertical or upright position in that only that portion of the trunk which provides the wardrobe section is required to be lifted to the erect position. It Will be seen that this eliminates the turning of the entire trunk to an upright position such as is called for in wardrobe trunkconstructions heretofore known and used. a
The facilitating of the lifting of the wardrobe section of the trunk to raised position is particularly applicable for use in'the restricted space provided in staterooms on board ship in which the trunk when not in use normally occupies a position beneath a berth. The drawing of the trunk from beneath the berth and the elevating of the cover section is not a difficult operation that the ,use' of a vvardrobe'trnnk of the steamertype is thus provided for in a practical and feasible manner. 1
It Will be seen that, if desired, the Wardrobe section 11 of the trunk may be used as the base member as in Figure 4 of the drawing, the compartment section 1O-being'then elevated to the erect position shown hereby access may be had to the individual com partments through the hinged door or'cl'osure members 21 pertaining thereto.
To facilitatethe most eifective u'se ofthe trunk, a handle member 22-is placed in middle of the long side of :the base'section as is shown inFign're 3 of the drawings,
this handle being particularly useful in' drawing the'trunk from a posit on-beneath a berth. A handle member 24 is provided on the end of the body or compartment see tion lOW'GmOiLQ from "the hinged end 12-, in addition to which a handle member 23 is provided on the endot'the cover member Which occupies, an elevated position when the cover section 11' is functioning "as a wardrobe. 7 V
