Description

March 15,1927. 1,620,902
- I A. KNITTEL GASOLINE TANK LOCK Filed June 1a. 1926 Patented Mar. 15, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM KNITTEL, OF TYNER, TENNESSEE.
GASOLINE-TANK 'LooK.
v Application filed" June 16,
' A second important object. of the invention is to provide an improved tank construction wherein the contentsof the tank may be kept from withdrawal so that the car, on which the tank-is installed, may have its engine cut off from the supply from the tank and thereby make it impossible to actuate the engine with the gasoline in the tank so that it is diflicult to steal the car.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved locking de vice for such'a tank.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novelde- 1 with this invention.
tails of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and spe cilically claimed.
1 In the accompanying drawings like char- 7 acters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and: r I y Figure 1' is a vertical longitudinal section through a tank constructed in accordance Figure 2 is a detail section of the upper part of such a tank taken substantially ona the line 22 of Figure 1, certain parts being shown in elevation.
In the form here shown there is disclosed a cylindrical tank 10 having the usual filling-opening 11, the tank being broken away and shortened in its length to better show off valve located wholly withinthe tank,
the various parts. This filling opening 11. is surrounded by the usual screw neck 12 and a cap, shown in dotted lines at 13, is provided for closing the same. Beneath the l filling opening is a U-shaped plate 14 having its legs'provided with flanges 15 secured to the inside of the tank as by rivetting, brazing or other suitable means. plate are closed by a suitable screen 17. Secured centrally of the plate 14 and passing therethrough is an ordinary look of the pintumblertype as at 18 and connected to the barrel of this look is a flexible shaft 19 which The ends of this.
1926. Serial No. 116,431.
extendsldown andis connected to the stem 20 of a plug valve 21. A suitable key 22 having a longshank is provided for oper ating the lock.- One end of the plug valve is closed and t'othe other end is connected. the
usual gasoline feed pipe 23 which is adapted to be connected to the engine through the carburetor in the usual manner. Neither the engine nor the carburetor is here shown as t-heydo not form parts of this invention. In this feedline 23 is'interposed a drain cock 24 so that thetank may be drained,if
desired, when the valve 21 is opened.
' An ullage 25 may beidropped through a suitable opening in the plate 14 to determine the quantity of gasoline in the tank.
It will benoted'that when ,the valve21 is closed no gasoline can fiowout of the tank and that the valve can be opened only I by 'useiof the key 22. "The tank cannot even be drained whiletthe valve is closed because the drain cock is positioned on the feed line- 23. opened by using the key 22 and the gasoline will then flow to the engine or may' be drained off through the cock 24. Y
There has thus been provided a simple I-Ioweve r, the valve 21 may be and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obviousthat minor changes may be made in the'formfand construction of the =1nvent1on without departlng from the material spirit thereof, It is not, therefore, desired to 'confinethe invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is f desired to include all such as properly come I within the scope of the claim.
is claimed asnew, is: I
In combinatioma gasoline tank, a drawa rotary part, a flexible shaft connecting said rotary part and valve'to actuate the latter upon actuation of the lock, a'feed pipe eX- tending from said valve and lying partly Having thus described the invention, what within said tank, and adrain cock carried ADAM KNIT-TEL.
