BED AND SPRING THEREFOR.
Application filed November so, 1925. serial Nb. 72,247.
This invention relates to improvements in beds and springs therefor, and has for its primary object, the provision oit' a bed -traine construction which may be adjusted. lengthwise Ii'or comfortably accommodating persons of various heights, and in which the springs may be lengthwise adjusted to span the bed trame within the limit ol its adjustment. It will be appreciated that by constructing a bed of this nature, it is possible to utilize waste space which is usually taken up by beds ot a length in excess to that required by a user. 'Y
Another object of the invention resides in an adjustable bed and spring which may be quickly collapsed when not in use, and packed in a manner as to require but little space for storing and shipping purposes.
A further object is to provide a combined bed and spring which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and highly sanitary when in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bed and spring. j
Figure 2 is a vdetail sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 isla similar view on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the 'drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates my improved bed in its (entirety and which includes a bed frame 11 and springs 12.
The bed 'frame 11 comprises a head frame 13 and a foot frame 14 which are adjustable lengthwise with respect to each other in a. manner and for a purpose to be presently described. Both the head and the foot frames are constructed of tubular material such as metal pipe and includes standard fittings for removably connecting the parts together.
The head frame 13 comprises the usual corner posts or vertical tubular legs 15 which support oppositely disposed pipe fittings 16 having angularly disposed branches 17 and 18.V The branchesy 17 receive the threaded ends of a transverse brace rod 19,`while the branches 13 thrcadedly receive one vend'of the longitudinal vtubular side bars 21.
The `loot trame 14 comprises corner posts or vertical legs 22 which support pipe tit tings 23 having internally threaded'branches 24 and which are angularly disposed and similar to the fittings 17 on the'head frame, and which are disposed in horizontal alignment with the fittings on said head frame. A tubular brace bar 26 has its ends threaded into the branches 24 of the iittings 23,V while branches 25 respectively receive one of the threaded ends of a pair of side bars 27 which which co-act with the 'threads 28 on the bars; t
27 and along which bars the thumb nuts are adjustable for obtaining the desired length of the bed. VThe thumb nuts act in the capacity of stops and engage the freeends Vof the tubular side bars 21.
The spring 12 comprises a section 30 similar to an ordinary bed spring and which is constructed of a' plurality of ilexiblyconnected links'eXtending longitudinally and transversely of the bed frame. One end of the section30 is suspended from the brace bar119 by contractile springs 31 and atransversely disposed spring 32 is connected with the'end links and has its ends providedwith rings which encircle the sidebars 21. The head end of the spring'is permanently connected with the head frame but the foot end is 'detachably connected with the foot frame in a manner now to be described.
Rotatably mounted upon the foot-"brace bar 26 is a lroller 33 formed of a pairof tubular lengths of pipe and connected adjacent the meeting ends by a. coupling 34. The lengths of pipe and the coupling constitute the roller and move as a single" unit.T The roller is provided with outwardly extending pins 35 which receive one of the links of the respective chains 36 which are detachably connected with the foot end of the spring section by snap hooks or the like 37. When the bed has been adjusted to the desired length, the spring section 30 is pulled taut and the chain engaged with the respective pins 35 on the roller. To make this spring section more taut, a removable handle memifor;
ilu
When the spring has been made sufhciently taut, a removable pin 39 is passed through an opening t() in the coupling 34 and through an aligning opening 41 in the footbrace rod 26. rlChis Will hold the spring taut until the pin is removed and will also retain the head and foot trame in their adjusted position as the thumb nuts 29 abut the ends of the tubular side bars 21. The handle member 38 is threadedly connected with the coupling 3-1 and may be removed after the desired adjustment has been obtained, and for sanitary purposes a plug it-2 is provided and may be threaded into the recess in the coupling to prevent dirt and insects from collecting therein. The plug is .suspended from the foot rest by a lflexible chain wherey it is always accessible tor use.
When not in use, the tension on the spring may be slaclened by unwind-.ing the roller 23 and disengaging the chains 36 from the pins 35. Owing to the iiexibility oi the spring section 30, the same may be lifted back over the head frame. The toot frame may now be withdrawn from engagement with the head frame after which the side bars 27 are unscrewed from the ittings 23, and the side bars 21 are similarly removed from the fittings 17. The head trame 13 and the foot frame 14 may be brought to lie against each other While the side bars 21 and 27 are adapted to be tied together into a single packages. When collapsed the entire structure may be conveniently packed for storing and shipping purposes.
From the `foregoing description it will be seen that after the bed has been adjusted Vto comfortably accommodate the user, the
same gives the appearance of an ordinary bed but should it be required to lengthen or shorten th-e bed, it is only necessary to rotate the thumb nut and operate the tension roller.
Vhile I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment o't my invention, it is obvious that many ot the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I there'tore do not limit myself to the exact details o'l construction hereii set forth nor to anything less than the whole oit my invention limited only by the appended claims.
