Description

Patented Mar. 8, 1927.*-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROYCE Ia. BEERS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
RILEY STOKER CORPORATION, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.v
SIDE TUYRE STRUCTURE.
Original application filed January 14, 19,21, Serial No. 437,238. Divided and this application liled August l11, 1923, Serial No. 656,977.
My invention relates to side tuyre struc-l tures for arrangement between the margin of the retort structure and the contiguous side wall of the furnace for supplyino4 air to 5 the combustion space and protecting the furnace side wall against clinker adhesion through the zone of detrimental clinker formation. A general object of my invention is to provide a tuyre structure of the charaeter stated which will be' of narrow or plate construction, which will be simple, easily manufactured, inexpensive to install or to replace, and of advantageous construction, giving reat resistivity to destruction by heat, capa ility to maintain such relative cool surface condition as will minimize elinkering, and other advantages.V
To these ends my invention consists in the features of construction and arrangement hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a plate tuyre constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, fragments only of a known type of retort structure being shown in -connection therewith; Fig. 2 front edge view of the tuyre structure, and Fig. 3 is a rear edge view thereof.
In th'e drawing 10 indicates fragmentarily $0 the margin of the retort, of a multiplefreto-rt rear-dumping Stoker of known design, such for example, as the Jones A-C Stoker, and 11 indicates the side wall of the furnace from which the margin of the extreme rotort of such a. Stoker is spaced, in substantial parallelism with the furnace side wall. 12 indicates in general the plate-tuyre structure which is adapted for mterposition between the retort-margin and the side wall to extend up the latter to a height at or above the uppermost level of expectable detrimental clinker formation. In the specific construction shown such tuyre structure spans directly from the upper edge of the retort to the slde wall, finding bearing against both of these shape in side elevation or face view, to provide a front edge portion 13 rising to a considerable height above the retort margin 5I and preferably merging into the slope of the innerl surface of said retort, a top-edge portion 14 extending laterally and upwardly, preferably at a more abrupt angle to the side arts. Such plate tuyre structure is Renewed December 3, 1926.
wall, for contact at its uppermost point with theside wall, and a rear edge 15 vertically disposed to yrest against the side wall. The body-web 17 has the remainder of its rear edge 16 shaped to extend from the bottom of the portion 15 to a point in rear of and below the bottom of the portion 13, so that on the bottom of the structure a point 16 is formed to fall behind the margin of the retort and prevent displacement of the lower edge of the structure toward the interior of the retort. A lug 16 may be suitably provided on the rear of the body-web apertured for receiving a suitable tie-rod.
A shallow flange 1 8 extends solidly along the top and wall-contacting sides of the plate, while the iange 19 follows its forward side (facing the retort) these flanges being preferably quite thin, and of uniform depth or projection from the body-web. Prefen ably such a flange is provided on one side only of the body-web.
The flange 19 may be interrupted by a lower group of tuyre notches 20, near the bottom of the structure, and an upper tuyre notch 21 is preferably provided to give an air escape opening close to the upper edge 14 of the plate. Preferably lugs 22 integral with the flange 19 extend rearwardly along the plate as lips aligning with the bottoms of the several tuyre openings. It will be understood that these tuyre plates will be placed lside by side as assemblies consisten with the length o f the retort.
In the operation of an underfeed` stoker of the character described, an area. of very active combustion will exist just above the level of the retort-margins, where air is supplied through tuyresv practically corresponding in position with the lower tuyre s 20, and at the furnace side wall clinker adhesion is apt to occur through a zone extending materially above the level of the retort margins. `With 'respect to the structure illustrated, it will be seen that each body- Web is adequately air-cooled by the constant passage of air from the windbox below the tuyre structure through the openings 20 and tensity of the lire burn away any flange or tion of the plates, the body-webs will a ord a gridvthat will prevent-the fire from falling through into the windbox below to any ser1- ously detrimental extent.
It will be understood that specic changes in design may be made without departure from the spirit of my invention within thc scope of the appended claims. f
I claim: v
1. A plate tuyre structure of the character described comprising a body web of substantially uniform thinness, having a rear vertical portion for contact with the furnace side wall, a bottom portion notched for en gagement with the margin of a retort which isispaced from the side wall, a front edge and a top edge that together extend upwardly and rearwardly affording a relatively long span between the bottom of the structure and the topof its rear edge, and a shallow marginal flange integral with said body web extending along the wall-contacting portion of the rear edge and along the top and front edges, said flange extending from one side only of the plate and being laterally interrupted, near its bottom to alord tuyre-openings, the portions 22 between said openings extending further back from the front edgefof 'the plate than the I general depthV of the remainder of the borderingange, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A side-tuyre structure of thecharacter described, comprising a body web of' substantially uniform thickness having a rear vertical portion for contact with the furnace side wall,`a bottom portion having a notch near the front edge for engagement with the margin of a retort which is spaced from the side Wall, a'front edge, a top edge which slopes upwardly and rearwardly at an angle greater than the angle of repose of the material that will bear thereon, said front and top edges together affording a relatively long span `between'the bottom-notch and the top of said rear vertical portion, and a shallow marginal flange integral with said body web' extending along the wall-contacting portion of the rear edge and along the top .-2
