HARNESS.
Application filed September At the present time it is common ractice,
in plowing, dragging, and the like, to
utilize the conventional structure of wagon harness employed in connection with trees. Such harness serves its function, but it is more or less complicated, expensive, and requires considerable time to p ntoon and the necessity of trees, which, in certain classes of work, are very undesirable as they interfere with the crop.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to overcome the foregoing objections by the provision of a simple, cheap, and efiicient harness for breastwork, which eliminates traces, breeching, and in teamwork the necessity of utilizing trees.
A further object is to provide a harness of the foregoing character which permits the use of a neck yoke or cross pole for pulling an implement.
\Vith the above and other-objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a harness constructed in accordance with the present invention, parts being broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate the structural features Figure 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the harness, and
Figure 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-8 of Figure .1.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, wherein the invention is shownattached to a horse, the numeral 1 designates a collar of conventional structure provided with the usual hames '2, 1926. Serial No. 13$,255.
to eliminate the customary traces, utilizes hame bolts 8 to which theftraces are usually connected. r
Carried by the bolts3 are apair' of metal straps d, the attaching ends of which are.
provided with eyes 5 forv the reception of The presentinvention which isdesigned the bolts 3, and are angularly offset at 6,
as h i g re 1 mm, to permi th straps toproject forwardly of the collar at the 'oesired angle. Tl 1e outer ends of the straps i are provided with eyes to, receive the bolts 8 carried by a double clevis 9 which s e to igi y nn ct liestrars The clevis 9 has restricted intermediate portion 10 which carries a link 11 connected to a cross pole or neck yoke 12, to which a chain or strap may be secured for attachment to an implement, such as a plow, drag, or the like.
In order to further secure the rigidity of the straps 4 with relation to the collar, a plate 9"1nay be mounted on the bolts 8 of the clevis 9 and a strap 13 is utilized to connect the plate to the throat of the col-. lar. Also, in some instances it is proposed to use a chain, or other form of supporting means 16 for connecting the traps 4 adjacent their outer ends. with the upper part of the hames 2, as shown in both Figures 1 and 2.
From the foregoing explanation, taken in connection with the drawing, it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient harness has been provided, which eliminates the neces sity of traces and trees, where the harness is to be used upon implements not having a tongue, this being particularly desirable for teamwork where the saving is materially increased over that of the single harness.
The present arrangement further permits the load to be exerted upon the horse at the most desirable point, and by reason of the fact that the neckyoke is rigidly carried immediately in front of the collar, the same is sufficiently high to avoidinterference and damage to crops in the case of various kinds of field work,
e claim:
1. A harness of the character described comprising a collar provided with hames, a pair of rigid straps carried by the'hames and extending forwardly of the collar, and a cross pole carried by said straps.
2. A. harness of the class described comprising a collar provided with hames, a pair of rigid straps carried by said hames and extending forwardly of the collar, means for connected the front end of said straps, and a cross pole carried by said connecting means.
A harness of the class described, co1nprising a collar provided with haines, a pair of rigid straps carried by the haines andextendingforwardly of the collar, a clevis for connecting the outer ends of said straps and a cross pole carried by said clevis.
4-. A harness of the class described, comprising a collar provided with homes, a pair of rigid straps provided with eyes at their outer and inner ends, bolts carried by the hanies for the reception of the eyes at the inner ends of said straps, a clevis for the reception of the eyes at the outer ends of said straps a link carried by said clevis, and a cross pole connected to said link.
5. A harness of the class described, c0mprising, a collar provided with hames, a pair of rigid straps carried by the hanies and extending forwardly of the collar, a clevis connecting the outer ends of said straps, means :lor connecting the clevis to the throat of the collar and means for connecting the straps adjacent their outer ends to the upper portion of the haiines.
G. A harness of the class described, comprising a collar provided with hames, a pair of rigid straps carried by the haines and extending forwardly ot the collar, the inner end ol said straps being; angularly offset and provided with eyes, holts carried by the hanies for the reception of said eyes, means {or coi'inecting the outer ends of said strapm and a cross pole carried hy said cmmoctin means.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing}; We have hereunto set our hands at lrlarinctte. in the county of h'larinette and Fltate of Wisconsin.
