UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK JOSEPH WEST AND'IERNEST WEST, 0F I/EANCHES'IER, ENGLAND, AS-
SIGNORS TO WESTS GAS IMPROVEMENT COMPANY LIMITED, OF MANCHESTER,
-ENGLANI), A BRITISH COMPANY.
COKE EXTRACTOR FOR VERTICAL RETORTS.
Application filed April 15, 1926, Serial No. 102,335, and in Great Britain June 30, 1925.
This invention relates to coke extractors for vertical. retorts of the type in which the coke is gradually lowered by a descending platform and discharged from the platform, the latter being then returned to its uppermost position, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of extractor of the said type.
Our invention comprises the provision beneath the vertical retort of a coke chamber having a vertically reciprocated ram therein and a. door or the like thereon, and means for bridging across the top of the coke chamher and forming a support for the material in the retort when the contents of the coke chamber are being discharged.
Referring to the accompanying explanatory drawings z- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation illustrate ing the lower part of a vertical retort having our improved coke extractor applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an elevation looking from right to left of Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 are views similar to Fig ures 1 and 2 but showing a modified arrangement of the means for operating the ram of the coke extractor.
The same reference letters in the views indicate the same or similar parts.
In accordance with our invention, and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, we provide a coke chamber a beneath the lower end 6 of the vertical retort. A ram 0 having an inclined upper face is adapted to be vertically reciprocatcd in said coke chamber by suitable means. One side of the coke chamber has a door (Z thereon hinged about its upper edge at e and adapted to be opened by suitable means when required. Latches secure the door when it is closed. At the top of the coke chamber a and to one side thereof, we provide a chamber or casing g in which can move an inclined grid 71. having, if desired, rack teeth 2' on its lower side which are engaged by a pinion by which the grid can be moved outwards so that it bridges across the top of the coke chamber as shown in Figure 1 and forms a support for the coke in the retort above, when the contents of the coke chamber are being discharged through the hinged door cl thereon. When the grid is withdrawn, it comes within the chamber or casing g and clear of the coke passing down into the coke chamber.
The vertically reciprocated ram 0 during its downward movement determines the rate at which coke is delivered from the retort, such rate being adjustable to suit the rate of carbonization in the retort. When it reaches the bottom of its stroke, the movable grid 7b is put into position across the top of the coke chamber, and the door (Z of the latter opened. The coke is then discharged, the door d again closed, the ram 0 raised by hand or by power to its uppermost position and the movable grid h withdrawn. The cycle of operations is then repeated. The
angle of inclination of the movable grid it corresponds to that'of the face of the ram, so that the latter lies under the former before the grid is withdrawn.
The means for reciprocating the ram comprise a double or looped wire rope in which has its looped end held or engaged by a fixed pulley at'L (Figure 2). The said rope passes round fired pulleys m, and pulleys n at the lower extremities of the ram 0. The two ends of the rope are coiled on to a drum 0 keyed upon a spindle ;0 having a portion of a claw-clutch feather keyed thereon. The worm wheel 9" which has the other part of the claw-clutch integral therewith is free upon the shaft p and is rotated b a worm 8 upon a shaft having a ratchet wheel I? thereon. The ratchet wheel is turned by pawl mechanism in a manner similar to that employed in connection with the known types of worm extractor gear of vertical retorts. After the drum 0 has wound off or paid out the desired length of rope to lower the ram 0 to the bottom of the coke chamher, a knock-off mechanism comes into action and disengages the two parts of the claw-clutch The ram then comes to rest and the coke chamber is emptied. The ram can be raised to its upper position by the handle 3 which turns the shaft 29 with the drum 0 thereon through speed reduction gearing u. The claw-clutch is then re-engaged and the cycle of operations repeated.
The operation of the pinion j by which the grid 72. is traversed is effected by the hand chain c and worm and worm wheel gearing.
In the arrangement shown in Figures 3 and 4, the rain 0 is operated hydraulically, the water under pressure being admitted by the valve 20 to the lower end of the cylinder in having the piston g therein. A knock-0E motion indicated'by .2 closes the valve to when the piston 1 reaches the top of its stroke. The descent of the piston is controlled by regulating the'rate of outflow of water therefrom through the valve 2 (Fig ure 4:).
e do not limit ourselves to any particular means for reciprocating the ram and for traversing the movable grid or opening the coke chamber door, but may vary the same to suit requirements.
\Ve claim 1. The combination with a vertical retort, of a coke chamber fixed beneath said retort, a ram movable in said chamber, a door at one side of the chamber, and means for bridging across the upper end or the chamher and forming a support for the material in the retort during the discharge of the contents of the chamber through the said door.
2. The combination with a vertical retort, of a coke chamber fixed beneath the said retort, a ram movable in said chamber, a door at one side of the chamber, and an inclined bridging member movable across the upper end of the chamber for supporting the material in the retort during the discharge of the contents of the chamber through the said door.
3. The combination with a fixed retort, of a coke chamber fixed beneath said retort, a ram movable in said chamber, a door at one side of said chamber, an inclined platform forming the upper surface of said ram, and
a bridging member movable across the up per end of the chamber for supporting the material in the retort during the discharge of the contents of the chamber through the said door, the said bridging member being inclined to correspond with the said inclined platform.
4. The combination with a vertical retort, of a coke chamber fixed beneath said retort, a ram movable in said chamber, a door at one side of the chamber, an inclined bridging member movable across the upper end or the chamber for supporting the material in the retort during the discharge of the contents otthe chamber through the said door, and a casing into which the said bric ging member is withdrawn to leave a clear passage between the retort and the coke chamber. I
5. The combination with a vertical retort, of a coke chamber fixed beneath said retort, a ram movable in said chamber, a door at one side of the chamber, an inclined bridging member for supporting the material in the retort during the discharge of the contents of the chamber through the said door, means including a rack and pinion for reciprocating the said member across the upper end of the chamber, and a casing into which such member is withdrawn to leave a clear passage between the retort and the coke chamber.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
