DISCHARGE-PIPE APPARATUS.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved discharge pipe construction for use in offtake systems, generally, designed for the discharge of the distillation products from carbonizing plants, such as by-product coke oven plants of the K-oppers crossregenerative type exemplified in the prior Letters Patent of the United States of Joseph Becker, for coking retort oven, No. 1,374,546, granted April 12, 1921.
This case is a division of my former application Serial No. 680,532, filed December 13, 1923, Patent No. 1,581,556. The claims of that application are directed more generally to combinations of elements constituting an ofltake system of particular construction for the distillation products of a carbonizin plant, the elements of the system as a whole being so coordinated as to prevent the accumulation of pitchy and carbonaceous deposits at any point, an important feature of such general combination being the use of a riser pipe and its connection to the discharge pipe in such manner as to substantially minimize the accumulation of the pitchy and carbonaceous deposits at their junction point, combined with a spray to facilitate the automatic discharge of such deposits as tend to accumulate, thereby obviating the necessity for mechanical cleaning. The claims of the present, or divisional application, on the other hand, are directed to a subcombination comprising a discharge pipe, per se, specially designed for use in systems employed to take off the distillatlon products from carbonizing plants, such discharge pipe being provided with an overflow liquid soal valve permitting at all tlmes the flow of the pitchy condensates to prevent their accumulation in the pipe, the valve being adjustable to permit or prevent at will the passage of the distillation gases. Thls subcombination is of utility in distillation product oiftake systems generally and is not limited in its use to the particular offtake system disclosed and claimed in the parent application. 7

in addition to the general objects recited above, the invention has for further objects such other improvements or advantages in construction and operation as may be found to obtain in the structures and devices hereinafter described or claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and showing for purposes of exemplification a preferred form and manner in which the invention may be embodied and practiced, but without limiting the claimed invention specifically to such illustrative instance or instances:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a standpipe apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention, the view showing the apparatus applied to the gas outlet of one of the coking chambers of a coking retort oven and connected with a collecting main in which the gases and distillation products of a battery of coke ovens are collected and subsequently discharged to the by-product recovery apparatus.

The same characters of reference designate the same parts in each of the several views of the drawings.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention there is shown a fragment of a coking chamber 11 provided in the top 12 with a gas outlet 13 through which discharge the gases from the distillation of the coal. The coking chamber 11 may be one of a battery of similar chambers, for example, as set forth in the prior patent to Joseph is a vertical sectional view of the Becker No. 1,374,546, hereinbefore mentioned. The discharge outlet 18 of each coking chamber 11 is equipped with a standpipe apparatus, and the standpipes of the several coking chambers are connected with and discharge into a common collecting main 14 which extends along one side of the battery. The collecting main 14 may be provided at one end with an elbow 15 for connecting said main to the gas pipe through which the gases and other products pass to the by-product recovery apparatus.
In accordance with the invention, the standpipe apparatus includes a riser pipe 16 constituted, preferably, of a lower vertical pipe section 17 mounted directly over the gas outlet 13 and from which the gases and distillation products pass into an upper ver tical pipe section 18 set in the top of the lower section 1'7. At the top of the upper section 18 there is provided an inspection hole 19 normally closed by the pivoted manually-o ierablc cover 20.
From the top of the riser pipe 16 the gases pass into the downwardly curved upper discharge pipe section 21 and from the bottom of said section 21 into the slightly downwardly inclined lower discharge pipe section 22. The lower discharge section 22 projects laterally from the upper section 18 of the riser pipe but has communication only with the bottom of the discharge section 21, in order to enforce passage of the gases first upwardly to the top of the riser pipe and thence downwardly through the discharge pipe of the standpipe' apparatus before the gases pass into the collecting main 14. The lower discharge pipe section 22 of each standpipe apparatus is connected by a short pipe section 23 with the side of the collecting main, the connecting pipe 23 being preferably located near the bottom of the collecting main, as shown, and below the longitudinal axis of said main.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 3, the upper discharge pipe section 21 is provided with a tapered portion 24: which projects within the inclined discharge section 22 and provides a seat 25 for a drop valve 26. The valve body 26 may be of the dished plate type, preferably of substantially the same diameter as the main portion of the discharge pipe section 21, with the concave surface uppermost, so that, when lifted to the closed position, the tapered portion 2 1- enters and seats securcl y within the concave upper surface ofthe valve body though permitting an overflow of sealing and cleansing liquid around the periphery, of said body, as hereinbefore set forth. The valve body 26 is mounted byears 27 on a rock shaft 26 which projects through the discharge pipe section 22 and is provided at its outer end with an operating handle 29. The shaft 28 together with the ears 2? and associated bearing member constitutes a hinge 28, the ears being downwardly inclined with reference to the top of the valvebodyin order that the entire hinge-structure may be located below the mouth of the tapered portio1r2 l. The'handle29 is lifted tolowerthe valve into open position v and lowered, as

I lift the valve into closed-position for, shutting 011 the standpipe from the collecting main. This is usually done at the time of charging the corresponding coking chamber or pushing out the coke. When in the valve closing position the handle 29 may be hooked under a lug 30 projecting from the side of the riser pipe 16, in order to hold the valve body 26 up securely against the seat 2st.
The above described construction provides an extremely simple and economical means for permitting the gases and the valve body itself, both inside and outside, together with its hinge to be sprayed, without any danger of the spray liquor entering the riser pipe and falling into the coking chamber or retort. The spray liquor may be introduced into the gases as they pass downwardly through the discharge pipe sections 21 and 22 from a nozzle 31 set into a port 32 located in the top of pipe section 21 and just over the valve body 26. hen the valve 26 is open the spray from the nozzle 31 will thoroughly flush out the concave upper surface of the valve body 26, portions of it also descending upon the hinge and around the bottom of the valve body to cool and clean the same, and will discharge through the lateral connections 22 and 23 directly into the bottom of a collecting main 14.
The invention as hereinabove set forth may be variously embodied within the scope of the claims hereinafter made.
I claim:
1. In an olftake for a carbonization chamher, in combination: a discharge pipe having a substantially vertical downwardly eX- tending portion, and a valve in said discharge pipe permitting when closed a continuous flow of a flushing medium through said valve and discharge pipe; substantially as specified.
2. A'piping apparatus for conveying distillation gases from a carbonization chamber, comprising: a discharge pipe for said gases having a substantially vertical downwardly extending portion, said discharge pipe being provided with a valve permitting when closed a continuous flow of a flushing fluid through said valve and discharge pipe though preventing that of the gas; and means for adjusting said valve to permit also the flow of the gas; substantially as specified.
3. In a piping apparatus for conveying distillation gases from a carbonization chamber: a discharge pipe; 21 valve comprising a receptacle with an open top. said discharge pipe being provided with a narrowed portion extending into and below'the top of said receptacle and ofless cross-sectional area, than the latter whereby illiquid seal may be. formed permitting the flow of liquid while preventing that of the gas, said receptaclebeing hinged at a point entirely below the mouth of said narrowed portion to' cause it to tiltdownwardly therebellt) neath when the valve is open; substantially as specified.
4. The combination as defined in claim 2, in which a flushing device is provided for supplying a flushing medium to the Valve and discharge pipe; substantially as specified.
5. In a piping apparatus for conveying distillation gases from a carbonization chamber: a discharge pipe; a valve comprising a receptacle with an open top; a portion of the discharge pipe extending within and below the top of said receptacle, said receptacle being hinged at a point entirely below said portion to cause it to drop downwardly beneath and away from said portion when the valve is open; substantially as specified.
