In many such articles, a box-like frame or body is formed of wood or fiber and a covering of leather or fabric is then applied thereto. Much difficulty has been experienced in joining the corners of the covering in such a way that a neat and pleasing result will be obtained and that the edges of the material will not be easily injured by usage.

It is the object of my invention to pro vide a joint or corner construction for such articles, so designed that the covering will form a substantially smooth and even surface about the corner and that the edges of the overlapping material will be protected from wear and accidental displacement.

My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

A preferred form of the invention is in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a suitcase embodying my improvement;

Referring to the drawings, I have shown a suitcase or other article having a body or frame 10 formed of wood or fiber or other suitable material, to which a covering of leather or fabric may be secured. This outer covering comprises two or more portions 11 and 12 which meet and overlap at the corners of the article.

In order to obtain a smooth surface and to protect the edges of the leather or fabric, I provide a recess or depression 13 extending This invention and other similar particularly to an which a covering lengthwise of the edge or corner of the frame 10 in one side surface thereof. This recess or depression 13 is preferably of a depth substantially equal to one thickness of the leather or fabric covering.

The covering portions are preferably cemented in the position shown and for greater security may be provided with one or more rows of stitching 16 extending diagonally across the corner of the article and so placed that the stitches extend through the edge portion 14 of the covering 11 and also through both the body portion and the edge portion 15 of the covering 12.

The different parts of the covering are thus very firmly secured in position and are A fully protected from wear at the edges. This form of joint is found to be of great advantage in practical use and greatly prolongs the life of the articles to which it is applied.

Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is 2-- 1. In hand luggage, a substantially rigid casing having portions meeting in a corner, said casing having a longitudinal depres sion in one side surface thereof adjacent said corner, a layer of sheet material extending toward the corner and into said depression, and .a second layer of sheet material extending around the corner and overlapping said first layer in said depression, said layers being secured in position to form' a joint substantially flush with said side surface.

2. In hand luggage, a casing formed of wood of substantial thickness having portions meeting in a corner, said casing having a longitudinal depression in one side surface thereof extending from said corner, a layer of sheet material extending toward the cor ner and into said depression, and a second layer of sheet material extending around the corner and overlapping said first layer in said depression, said depression being of a depth substantially equal to the thickness of a single layer of sheet material, and both Kim layers of sheet material being of substantially full thickness at the edges thereof.

In hand luggage, a substantially rigid casing having portions meeting in a corner, said casing having a longitudinal depression in one side surface thereof adjacent said corner, a layer of sheet material extending to Ward the corner and into said depression, a second layer of sheet material extending around the corner and overlapping said first layer in said depression, said layers being secured by a. roW of stitch s extending diag onally through the edge portion of sait first layer of sheet material and through the body portion and the overlapping portion of said second layer of sheet material to form a joint substantially flush with said side surface.
