f g VIUIIL-sAvING DEVICE.
l @yucatan mea prix 2 6, 192s. serial No. 104,599.
My inventionlpertains yto fuel -savi'ngy devices,i and more particularly t'o such devicesv as are usedk 1n connection with boiler lfur-V naces or similar furnaces,'to'feed air thereto and which are mounted inthe flues thereof which conduct the heat currents from the firebox to'the smoke chamber of such VAboiler furnaces.
Thev main obiect o-f myV invention is to provide an improved fuel saving device@ which can be readily mounted or installed in a boiler furnace and in the i'lues thereof, and which will receive atmospheric air, preheat the same, and conduct and discharge the atmospheric air into the heat currents issuing from the `fireloox and before such currents, enter the iiues on' their passage to the smokechamber and smoke stack.l Another object is to `provide such a device including'a casing with outlet openings at one end placedadj-acent the inlet end of a iiue and including a pipe. threaded in thek opposite end of said casing and extending there-l from through the discharge end of said flue, into the atmosphere, said device preferably including means for closing? the outlet end of said flue.V And another object is to provide a'casing withoutlet openings and partition walls, and a Vcompressor member mounted on said walls to diminish the interior space in said casing and to compress the air passing through the casing before it issues, from the outlet openings.
Other objects and advantageous ends are accomplished with my invention, as will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings` in which,
Fig. 1. is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of a portion of a straight draft boiler furnace, showing avfuel saving device eminvention mounted in a flue,
bodying my f th rom e with its discharge end protruding flue;
Fig. 21s-asimilar v1ew,.of a return tubuv lar boiler furnace, illustrating my invention app-lied thereto and mounted within the flue; Fig'. .3 is anenlarged longitudinal section through a flue with my invention mounted therein and the discharge end of the casing protruding from the flue;
Fig. l isa view similar to that shown in Fig. 3, and showing the operativeness and efciency of the device, even though the protruding end of the casing is burnt off or lbroken away or otherwise damaged;
Vvide a space or chamber 5 is a cross section on of*l Fig. 3; and p Fig. 6 is yan enlarged View similar to Fig.
3', but showing the discharge end of vthe casing mounted entirely within the liuc.
In Fig. 1 of the` drawings I have shown i a form of my invention mounted in position in a boiler furnace 10 which'includes the usual firebox 11 and grate12 vat the Afront,` of a boiler furnace and a'smoke chamber 1 3 at the rear thereof leading vto the smoke stack (not shown), said smoke chamber also serving the function of a combustionv cham! ber in this type of furnace. A boiler portion or heating portion 14 communicates with the liirebox l1 and includes a plurality of iiues 15 for conducting the heated air' and smoke, or the heat currents, from the fireb'ox 11 to the smoke chamber 13. vThe furnace is also provided with the usual door 16 affording access to the lirebox and to the flues and providing a fire door as well 'as al iiue cleanout door.4 n
My improved fuel saving Vdevice is mount- `ed in one or more of. these `iiues 15, and the casing 17 provided with a perforated outlet A I portion or end 18, preferably tapering or conical in shape, and having out-letv openings 19 provided around said tapering end, and an opening 19 on the narrowed end `or point. This taperingportion is partially extended beyond thev flue, as shown in Figs. land 3. rIhe opposite end of the casing is provided with a thickened end wall 20 or thickened in part and having 'a threaded opening for receiving the threaded end 21 of a pipe 22 which extends through the other end or discharge end of the flue and through the furnace wall, beyond the furnace, into the atmosphere.
I provide this casing with -intersecting partition walls or members 23 which are stopped short of the endk wall 20,.. to pro- 24 between the end wall and the partition walls, thus permitthe Hrebox to the Hues and there-through to the smoke chamber. A ring 26 is preferably placed around the pipe at the discharge end of the Hue near the smoke chamber, for'sup- Y transverse direction, due to the compressor` member 25, which is effective for compressing the air and directing `it transversely through the openings 18, so as to properly mingle with the heat currents issuing from the Hrebox. j
In Fig. 2 of the drawings is shown a boiler furnace in which the smoke chamber 13 is located at the front of the furnace, and the heat currents travel from the Hrebox 11 and the grate 12 rearwardly beneath the boiler portion or heating portion 111. to the combustion chamber 13, and therefrom through the Hues 15 into the smoke chamber 13 and up to the chimney. The usual door 16 is also provided to permit access to the Hues and smoke chamber' and for cleaning out of the Hues.
The fuel saving device shown in this formV is substantially the same as in the preceding form, including a casing 17 with tapering end 18 and discharge openings 19 and 19, and the thickened end wall 2O and partition wall 23 with a compressor member 25. The pipe 22 has its end 21 likewise threaded into end wall 20 and extends from the Hue and beyond the furnace into the atmosphere. But in this form, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the tapering end 18 of the casing is mounted entirely within the inlet end of the Hue,
' while at the outlet end of the Hue the pipe 22 is supported by a ring 26 and said end of the Hue is furthermore closed or sealed by sealing means 27, as cement or the like. This ring 26, as well as the sealing means 27, may be omitted from the device, especially where the perforated tapering portion 18 is extended from the Hue, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
It is apparent from the foregoing disclosure that this fuel saving device is arranged and constructed so that it can be readily installed in the various types of boiler furnaces, by entering the casing through the usual fire-door or cleanout-door, and mounting it in the Hue, while the air intake pipe is likewise insertable through said door and is extended through a hole .provided in the furnace wall for this purpose, and is therefrom extended beyond the furnace into the atmosphere, to take in the `heat currents arising from the Hreboxin their passage to the Hues and therefrom to the smoke chamber.
