UNITED STATES PATENT'OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. KENDALL, or NEWARK, Nnw JERSEY, assronon ro' PAitFUMEBIE meson, me, or msw yoax, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
VANITY oasn.
Application filed my 1, 1192 5. Serial No. 21.149.
My invention relates to a new and improved vanity case.
One of the'objects of my invention is to statement of the objects of my invention is intended only to generally explain the same and not to limit it in any manner.
Fig. l'is a top view showing the case open.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section showing the case partially open.
Fig. 3 is a side elevatlon showing the case in the closed position.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view.
The vanity case'comprises two like body members 1 and 2 made of any suitable metal and connected by a. hinge 3. The hollow body member 1 has a rin otherwise suitably connecte to the top of the concave portion thereof. As shown in Fig. 4, this ring, which ma he called a 'retaining ring,is provided with a shouldered portion S which is adapted to be engaged by a cover member 5 connected to the ring 7 by means of a second or cover hinge 4.
As shown in Fi 2, when the cover 5 is in'the closed position, it fits tightly against,
the shoulder S and its contour conforms to the contour of the top of the retaining ring 7 so that the said cover 5 acts as a valve to tightly close the opening in the retaining ring 7. Since the retaining ring 7 is soldered or otherwise connected. to. the body member 1- so as to provide a tight joint, the
leakage of the loose powder from the com-' partment provided therefor in the body member 1 is minimized. The cover member .may be provided with a sli 7 soldered oriecured. The cover member 5 ispreierably made of a resilient sheet or piece of metal polished on both sides so that" it serves as a mirror when it is in the open and in the closed position. It isprovided with'a linger piece 6 by means of which it canbe readily opened. If desired, the said cover member 5 htly projecting portion which will engage the inner peripheryof the retaining ring 7 so as to frictiona1 y hold the cover member 5 in closed position and to enable the cover member 5 to be easily opened.
By this improved construction a tightly closed compartment is provided for the loose powder by means of a cover member which also acts as a mirror in the open and closed positions of the cover member.
A powder puff P may be held within the loose powder compartment, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
I have shown apreferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions could be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim A vanity case comprising two body members connected by means of a hinge, one of said body members having a hollow portion adapted to contain loose powder, the last mentioned body member having a retaining ring soldered thereto, the top of said retainmg ring projecting above the hollow portion of said body member, said retaining ring, having an inner annular shoulder, the sai retaining ring having a cover member cover member having a periphery having a contour similar to the contour of said shoulder, the periphery of said cover member being adapted to fit frictionall'y within said inner shoulder.
connected thereto by means of a hinge, said In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
WILLIAM G. KENDALL.
