SELF-IGNITER.
Application filed February This invention relates to improvements in portable self igniters adapted for use in lighting cigars, etc. and the main objectis to provide such an igniter of cheap yet substantial construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide such an igniter with a cap that will be locked with the igniter'body and yet easily removable therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a filling receptacle in such an igniter so as to avoid filling the igniter from the top and thus prevent an explosion of the fuel while filling.
A still further object is to provide inlet air openings in the igniter so as to obtain instantaneous results when the cap is removed.
Other objects and novel features of the invention will become more apparent and will be more fully described as the specifica tion proceeds.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are views in elevation of the apparatus showing the cap locking means.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view with moved and 5 is a detail view porting frame.
Referring to the drawings in detail 10 indicates my improved igniter composed of a tubular receptacle or body portion 11 having at its lower extremity a detachable chamber 12 which may be filled with a vaporizable medium of any suitable character, such as Columbian spirit, ether, gasoline, benzene, etc. and such fluid may be conveniently stored within the receptacle 11 by means of an absorbent, noncombustible wick 13 which is packed therein extending substantially through the entire length of the body portion 11. To the upper portion of the body member 11 there is suitably attached a frame 14 containing a catalyst composed of a platinum sponge 15 supported on the frame 14 by strands 16 of platinum wire. This sponge 15 and the strands 16 are capable of becoming incandescent when brought in contact with a combustible vapor rising the cap reof the catalyst sup- 1, 1926. Serial No. 85,163.
from the vaporizing medium employed in the igniter when the igniter is opened to the atmosphere. A cap 18 having cam locking arms 19 fitting over the upper portion of the body or receptacle 11 and in cam locking grooves 20 in said upper portion positively seals the igniter. The locking arms and grooves prevent accidental displacement of the cap thus preventing premature ignition of the lighter, when carried in the pocket. Openings 21 in the body portion 11 normally covered by the locking arms 19 tend to accelerate the vaporization of the fuel as air is permitted to come into cont-act with the fuel in the wick while the cap is being removed from the igniter' by twisting said cap in the direction by insuring immediate combustion of the wick when the cover is removed. To protect the catalyst from coming in contact with the cap and from being displaced or destroyed a protecting chamber 23 is formed at the upper portion of the igniter by projections 22 on the upper portion of the body 11 coming in contact with the underside of the cap 18, thus preventing the cap from being jammed down upon the catalyst due to inaccurate workmanship on the locking means of the cap and body. A collar 24 is inserted at the upper end of the wick 13 to keep same from rubbing against the platinum wires 16 and breaking them and also to insure a wide flame.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved portable or pocket igniter that is instantaneous in action and one that is safe in every respect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A self igniter comprising a receptacle containing an inflammable vapor producing medium, material capable of catalytic action in the path of vapor issuing therefrom, a cap adapted to seal the receptacle at its upper end, cam locking arms on said cap and cam locking grooves on the receptacle adapted to coact with the locking arms to removably lock the cap on the receptacle.
