RIM LOOK.
Application filed July 29,
This invention relates to improvements in riin locks of the rotary bolt type,-one object of the invention being to provide simple and -efiicient means for imparting sliding and rotary motion to the bolt for projecting the same and looking` it in the strike or keeper and for unlocking the bolt from the strike or keeper and retracting the same.
lvVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
n the accompanying' drawings,-
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the cover plate reinoved.
Figure 8 is a separate view showing the cover plate.
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 2 but showing the positions of the parts when the bolt is projected.
Figure 5 is a view in 5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a view in 6-6 of Figura 1.
Figure 7 is a view in 7--7 of Fignre 1, and
Figure 8 is a detail view illustrating engageinent of the bolt with the strike or keeper.
The casing' of a rim lock is indicated at 1 and the removable cover plate thereof is shown at 2, -one end of said cover plate entering a groove 3 in one end wall of the casing and the other end of the cover plate resting upon a ledge 4 on the other end wall of the casing. In the drawings, a pivoted latch lever 5 is shown for securing the cover plate in place,-said latch lever having a tongue at its free end which enters a groove '7 in an end wall of the casing, and said latch lever is shown having a hole 8 which will become disposed over a key plug' 9 which passes through an opening` in the cover plate and is provided with a fiange 10 s-eated in a depressed portion 11 in said cover plate.
The bolt of the lock is represented at 12 and is provided at its forward end with lateral projections forming a cross head 18 which, when the bolt is in retracted position, occupies a suitably shaped opening in one end wall of the casing and when the bolt is projected into a strike or keeper 14,
section on the line 5 v section on the line section on the line 1924. Serial No. 728,908.
said cross head Will be disposed as illustrated in Figure 8. A recessed rib 15 on the underside of the cover plate 2 will assist in guiding` the bolt within the casing. The bolt is provided with a longitudinal groove 16 in its forward portion and with a transverse groove 17 which connnunicates with the rear end of the longitudinal groove 16, said grooves being adapted to receive a pin 18 projecting from the inner face of the coverI plate whereby the bolt will be guided in its longitudinal movenients and permitted to be partially rotated when projected into the strike or keeper. A spiral groove or pinway 19 is formed in the bolt and receives a roller 20 mounted on a slide 21. This slide is provided near its rear end with a trans-- versely disposed, elongated slot 22 and may also be provided with a bolt guide 15. A
knob 23 is suitably mounted in a wall of the casing and provided within the latter with an arm 211, from which a pin or crank 25 projects and on this pin or Crank a sleeve 26 may be loosely mounted to operate in the slot 22 in the slide 21.
The key plug' 9 is provided at its inner end with arms 27 for Cooperation with the pin 25 to operate the slide 21 when a key is einployed and for the accommodation of one of these arms when the bolt is in retracted position, said bolt is provided in its rear end with an elongated recess 28 as illustrated in Figure 7. i
iVhen the knob 23 or the key plug 9 is turned (the bolt being in retracted position), the slide 21 will bye caused to move forwardly and, by its connection with the bolt, the latter will be moved forwardly and will be guided in its longitudinal travel by the pin 18 in the longitudinal slot 16 until the head of the bolt enters the keeper, at which time the transversely disposed `groove 17 will have reached the pin 18 and further movement of the slide will cause the bolt to be turned by cooperation of the roller 20 with the spiral groove 19. it is apparent that when the knob or key plug is reversely turned, the bolt will be partially rotated and then retracted longitudinally from the position shown in Figure 4 to the position shown in Figures 2 and 7.
Having fully deseribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a lock, the combination With a casing and a pin projecting inwardly rom a member of said casing, of a bolt having longitudinal and transverse grooves communioating With each other to receive said pin, said bolt also havino a spiral groove, a slide, a meinber on said slide entering said spiral groove, said slide having an elongated slot, and manually operable means including a part passing through said elongated slot.
2. In a lock, the combination With a casing, of a headed bolt having a spiral groove, means tor guiding said bolt in a longitudinal direction and i'or permitting it to have a rotary movement at one end or the longitudinal throw ot' said bolt, a single slide havi-n T a. part to enter the spiral groove in the bozlt to impart both longitudinal and rotarl7 movement to said bolt in both projecting and retracting inovement of said bolt, and means to actuate said slide.
3. In a lock, the combination with a cas ing, of a headed bolt having a spiral groove and also having communicating longitudinal and transverse grooves, a pin projecting` from a member of the casing to enter said last men'tioned grooves, a slide provided with a part to enter the spiral groove in the bolt, said slide having a transverse elongated slot, an Operating member provided With an arm, and a. member operable by said arm and passing through the transverse elongated slot in the slide.
L. In a lock, the combination With a casing including a cover plate, otl a headed bolt having a spiral groove, guiding` means for said bolt Whereby the latter is caused to move longitudinally When being projected and then permitted to turn, a slide provided With a member to enter the spiral groove in the bolt, said slide having a transverse elongated slot, a knob mounted in a Wall of the casing, an arm projecting from said knob, a pin carried by said a na and passing through the elongated slot in the slide, and a key plug moun'ted in the cover plate and having arms cooperable With said pin, said bolt having a reeess for the accommodation of a key plug arm When the bolt is retracted.
In testimony Whereof, I have signed this specification.
