Description

Jan. 4,1927. I
w. c. HlERlNG BAG FRAME Filed May 29, 1926 INVENTOR w- B we Patented Jan. 4, 1927.
* UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
VIILLIAM C. I-IIERING,.OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 J. E. MERGOTT CO., OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
BAG FRAME.
Application filed May 29.
This invention relates to that type of bag frame in which an ornamental or decorated front plate is secured to the side of the frame to improve the appearance of the bag. and it has for its object to so construct the plate that it may be readily and rigidly secured to the side of the bag frame in an il'iexpensive manner.
A further feature is in the provision of tinted and attractive display plates engageable in a holder fixed conspicuously on the bag frame, which if desired may bearan owners name, and address, or the like.
These and other objects, which will become apparent as the description.progresses, are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a component of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a conventional type of bag frame showing an application of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the placard receiving holders showing the manner in which an identification is displayed.
Figure 41 is a similar view of a display card or plate.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
I the drawing, the numeral 10 generally designates a pair of channelled frame sides for a conventional type of bag, the same being U-shaped in contour, their ends having flat depending lugs 11 pivoted to each other forming hinges 12.
The longitudinal members of the frame have fixed centrally thereon an ordinary type of bag catch 13 to retain the frame sides in engagement when closed.
Permanently fixed on the outer surface of one or both of the upper longitudinal members of the frame, to extend partially or wholly the length thereof is a metal strip 141, the upper and lower edges 15 of'which are curled inwardly to present a channelled guide or holder.
The strips 14 terminate in flat lugs, one of which 16, is bent outwardly to close one end of the holder.
Slidable in the holder to be retained by 1926. Serial no. 112,466.
the curled edges 15 are a plurality of plate strips 17, made preferably of glass, cellulo d, or leather, although wood, metal or card-board may be used, and which may be tinted in any desired contrasting of colors, one of said strips bearing thereon any pre ferred legends, such as an identification 18 of the owner.
After the strips 17 are inserted in their proper position, an extended lug 19 on the opposite end of the holder is bent to close the channel guide, thereby preventing the strips from being removed from their places.
It is to be understood that the channel guides are rigidly fixed to the frame members during their construction and prior to polishing, plating or other finishing operations, constituting a component of the frame, and that a suitable stock of blank strips to receive inscriptions will be carried by a retailer of the bags.
From the foregoing, it may be seen that a novel and effective method of identifying an owner of a bag has been disclosed, in which few and simple elements are employed and which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost. 7 7
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been dis closed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict'the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention may be made without conflicting with the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a bag frame, of a channelled guide having inreaching edgespermanently fixed on the outer face of one or both the longitudinal members of the frame, one or more strips slidable in said guide, and integral tabs on the ends of said guide to retain said strips therewithin, said tabs when in operative position completely closing the ends of said guide.
2. In combination with a bag frame, of a holder fixed conspicuously on the frame during its construction to be finished therewith, one or more strips enterable in said holder, said strips being strongly contrasting in color, and means on said holder to Ell confine the strips therein, said means when operative providing a finished closure for the holder.
3. In combination with a bag frame of a holder, having partially curled upper and lower edges to present holding grooves, said holder being permanently fixed on the outer face of one or both of the longitudinal members of the frame, flat lugs formed inte' grally at the ends of said holder, said lugs 1 being bent at right angles to said holder to close the ends of the same, and a strip slidingly engageable in said holding grooves.
This specification signed this 11th day of.
May, 1926,
WILLIAM C. HIERING.
