PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD DE VBIIES, OF OAK LAWN, ILLINOIS.
PROTECTOR.
Application filed. April 19, 1826. Serial No. 103,139.
This invent-ion relates to a device for use on automobiles the general object of the invention being to provide a cover for the spark coils and spark plugs of the motor to prevent water from reaching the same and short circuiting the ignition system.
Another object of the invention is to so arrange the device that it will be hidden from view and will not interfere with in spection or the repairing of the motor.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the sevoral. parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail ref-- erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation with parts in sec tion, showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device itself.
In these views 1 indicates the device which is preferably formed of a single sheet of material bent on its longitudinal center to form a ridge member so that water will drain to either side of the device from the center. One end of the device has each sloping part bent upwardly to form aflange 2, the metal being out between the flanges, as shown at 3, and a portion of each side edge is bent up to form a flange 4, the outer end of each flange 2 being bent up to engage the flange The flanges 2 are each provided with a slot 5 so as to receive the bolts 6 which will clamp the flanges 2 against the dash A of the vehicle. As shown in Figure 1 the device is placed over the rod 7 which connects the radiator with the dash and the front end of the device is fastened to said rod by a piece of wire 8 which passes through holes formed in this end of the device.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that his device when positioned, as shown in Figure 1, will prevent water from leaking through the hood upon the spark plugs, the coil terminals and the wires of the vehicle so that there is no danger of the ignition system being short circuited during a hard rain storm or snow storm. The water will be directed to either side of the motor and the flanges 2 and 4: will prevent any water from running on to the dash in the vicinity of the terminals of the coils.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with in the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A cover for the ignition system of a motor vehicle comprising a ridged plate having its rear end cut at the ridge and bent up to form two flanges, with portions of the side edges bent up at the rear to form side flanges, the end flanges having portions overlapping the side flanges to prevent water from dropping off the rear end of the plate and the rear flanges having bolt receiving openings therein so that the plate can be bolted to the dash of a vehicle and a wire at the front end of the plate for connecting the plate to the rod which connects the radiatorwith the dash.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
EDWARD DE VRIES.
