Description

Patented Dec. 28, 1926.
STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALF WEANER.
Application led December 28, 1925. Serial No. 78,062.
This invention relates to calf weaners.
Gne object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, Vdurable and efficient calf weaner which may be readily applied to or removed from the head of the animal.
Another object is to provide a calf weaner embodying among other characteristics a frame from which a suitable muzzle or guard is suspended and on which frame a nostril engaging device is freely slidable so that if the muzzle or guard should become caught in anything, causing the calf to give a backward pull, the nostril engaging device would play or slide on the frame and thereby take strain off the nostril engaging device and throw all strain onto the head strap, whereby to eliminate possible injury to the animal.
`With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size, shape and minor details without departing from the spirit of the invention as afforded under the appended claims.
1n the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a frame composed preferably of fiat metal and comprising side bars 4 and 5 and a connecting front portion 6, the latter slightly elevated with relation to the side bars, due to a slight upward bend or curvature 4 and 5 respectively, in the side bars. l
The rear ends of the side bars 4 and 5 are directed upwardly, as at 7, with loops 8 formed at the upper ends of the portions 7 to receive a head strap 9.
A nostril engaging device is slidably mounted on the side bars 4 and 5 and this device may consist of a pair of arms 10 and 11, each having a relatively large eye 12 and 13, respectively, to loosely and slidahly embrace the respective side bars. These arms overlap and have their inner ends curved upwardly to form oppositely disposed nostril engaging knobs 14. At their points of overlapping the arms are pivoted together, as at 15, so that the knobs 14, may be moved toward and away from each other to permit engagement or disengagement of the arms with or from the animals nostrils. A removable fastening 16 will prevent movement of the arms on their pivot 15 when the device is applied to the animal formed in the side bars 4 5 and front portion 6, respectively.
By having the nostril engaging device freely slidable on the front portions of the side bars the calfs nostrils are not liable toI injury. For instance, if the muzzle or guard should get caught in something, the calf would pull back, and by permitting a free sliding movement of the nostril engaging device on the side bars and the muzzle or guard fastened to the side bars and the front connecting portion thereof, and unconnected with the nostril engaging device, the backward pull by the calf causes all strain to be placed on the head strap and not on the nostril engaging device. Thus, the weaner is constructed and applied for the comfort of the animal with little or no danger of injury to the animal.
That is claimed is 1. A calf weaner comprising a frame including side bars, a nostril engaging device freely slidable on and suspended from the side bars and including pivoted arms, and a guard suspended from the frame.
2. A calf weaner comprising a frame including side bars, a nostril engaging device freely slidable on and suspended from the side bars and including pivoted arms overlapping and having their inner ends curved in opposite directions, the side bars having perforations therein, and a guard having its upper portion disposed in said perforations whereby to suspend the guard from the frame.
8. A calf weaner Comprising a frame including side bars and a front portion oonneotngegthe side bars and elevated slightly above the latter, a nostril engaging device freely slidalole on the side bars toward and away from said front portion, the rear ends of the side bars having upwardly directed ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set 1n y han d.
