H. MacDoUGALL VANITY CASE Filed May 1,' 1926 .-)IIIII k l l INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 28, 1926.
UNITED STATES HAROLD BIACDOUGALL, -OF MAPLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY.
VANITY CASE.
Application filed May 1,
This invention has relation to dispensing containers and has particular reference to a container for use as a vanity ease to constitute a convenient, sate, and sanitary means for carrying, dispensing` and applying loose tace powder'.
Primarily the invention comprehends a vanity case constituting a dispensing container for loose powder in which the applicator or puff elements is connected with the container and in which means is provided for dispensing the contents through the pui? or applicator member on to its applying face.
More specifically, the invention contemplates a dispensing container for face powder or other powdered substances, which consists ot a hollow, o-pen-ended body closed at one end by a llexing wall constituting means when flexed inwardly for creating a pressure within the body and having a porous applicator or pull member provided with an outer applying tace arranged over the open end and through which the powdered contents is dispensed on to the outer applyingl face when the flexing end of the body is flexed inwardly to create an internal pressure.
The invention furthermore contemplates means for detachably associating the puit or applicator member with an open end ot the container' body whereby said putt or applicator member may be periodically renewed and whereby means is atlorded for introducing the contents to the body.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means 'for removably retaining the applicator or puff element in associated relation with the container body, which means also constitutes a seat for a cover for housingand protecting the applieater element.
The invention furthermore aims to provide a device of the character set forth, which is comparatively simple in its construction and mode of use,y which is inexpensive to manufacture, and which is highly eiiicient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in view, reference is hadto the following specification and accompanying drawings in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the appended claims as it is to be clearly 1926. serieu Noicaias.
understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of said claims may be resorted to when found expedient.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case in closed condition;
F ig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough;
Fig. 3 is a collective perspective view of the elements or parts in disassembled condition.
Reterring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a hollow, preferably cylindrical, body, which is closed at its lower end by a flexing end wall 11 normally bnlged or flexed outwardly due to its inherent resiliency, which wall is preferably connected by an annulus 12 to the lower end of the body 10. In order to limit the inward flexing and to insure a normal outward ilexing ol the wall 11, a ring 13 is provided which is formed with radial inwardly projecting lingers la, said ring being clamped between the margin ot the wall 11 and the annulus 1Q. The body l() is provided with an upper portion 15 of relatively reduced diam-eter forming an annular shoulder 16, the upper end being open. A puff or applicator member including a porous body 17 provided on its outer side with a nap 18 constituting an applying face, is provided, which is stretched or arranged over the open end of the body 10. The means tor removably stretching and retaining the applicator member over the open end consists of a trictional clamping ring 19 which is ot an appropriate size to snugly tit around the downturned margin ot the applicator member and arranged over the reduced upper portion 15. The clamping ring is provided at its lower end with a marginal or peripheral bead 20, which in addition to serving as means for facilitating its removal also constitutes a stop or abutment for the marginal depending iiange 21 of a cover 22, which carries a mirror 23 clamped between the bead 24 at the upper end of the flange 21 and the end wall 25 of the cover.
In use, the loose face powder or other substance to be dispensed and applied, is arranged within the body 10, and after the applicator or puff element is arranged and clamped in place by stretching the same over the upper open. end of the body,- the clamp:

' tin ued.
ing ring is engaged thcreove'r as illustrated. By flexing the lower end l1 inwardly7 an internal pressure is created which dispenses through the porous body 17 on to the nap or applying tace 18, a quantity ot' the contents. The lingers i4 olf the ring 13 serve as a means for limiting the inward movement and insure the return of the end wall 1l to a normal outwardly 'flexed position when manual pressure thereon is discon- The user then employs the body 1.0 as a holder or handle tor applying the powder-laden applying` liace 18 to the point atI which the powder is to be applied. rlhe cover serves as a means 'for normally housing and protecting the applicator niember and when removed the same serves in the 'apacity ot a mirrora lilhat claimed is:
1. A. dispensing container tor powdered substancesv couuirising a hollow open--enifleifl body haring a flexing portion constituting iueans when flexed inwardly 'loi' producing an internal pressure within thc body, and a porous applicator member having an outer applying tace arranged on said open end ot the body through which the powdered contents is dispensed on the outer applying tace when the flexing portion ot the body is flexed inwardly.
2. A dispensing container lor powdered substances, comprising a hollow, open-ended vbody having a flexing portion constituting meansl when flexed inwardly 'for producing an internal pressure within the body, a porous applicator member having an outer applying tace arranged on said open end ol" the body through which the powdered contents is dispensed on to the outer applying 'tace when the flexing portion ol" ther body 'flexed inwardly. said porous applicator member being oll a flexible material, and means engaging over the n1ar.;inal edge oi" the applicator and oper end ol thc body tor clamping the saine in stretched relatirm vover said open end.
3. A lispeii:ing container for powdered substances. comprising a hollow, open-ended body having a flexing portion constituting,y means when l'lexed inwardly for producing an internal pressure within the body, a porous applicator nien'iber having an oute applying tace arranged on said open end of the body through which the powdered contents is dispensed on to the outer applying lace when the tlexing portion ot the body flexed inwardly. said lporous applicator member being of a flexible material. means engaging over thevmarginal edge ot the applicatm' and the open end of the =body lor clamping the same'in stretched relation over said open end, and a cover tor said applicater.
l. A dispensing container for powdered substances, comprising a hollow, open-ended body having a flexing portion constituting means when tlexed inwardly for producing an internal pressure within the body, a porous applicator' member having an outer applying tace arranged on said open end of the lzody through which the powdered contents (-lispi-ensed on to the outer apply/*ing 'tace when the flexing portion ol the body is .flexed inwardlyn said porous applicator member being ot a llexible maun'ia'l. means engaging over the insufginal edge of the appli 'ator .member and the open end ot the body tor clamping the same in stretched relation over said open end, a cover lior said applicator' mem ber. and retaining means 'tor detachably associating the applicator member with the body.
5. A dispensing container lor powdered substances, comprising a hollow, open-ended body having a. closed flexing end constitutirj; means when dexed inwardly tor producan inter-nail pressure within the body, a porous applicator member having an outer applying tace arranged on said open end ot the body through which the powdered contents dispensed on to the outer applying tace when the flexing end of the body is flexed inwardly, said porous applicator member being ot a flexible material, means engaging over the marginal edge ot the applicator member and the open end oi the body tor clamping the same in stretched relation over raidopen end, a cover tor said applicator, and re aining means 'toi' detai-.hably associating the apl'ilicalor member with th body. said retaining means con;:titiiting seat lor the cover.
(l. fr dispensing contaiuc'.' for powdered substances, conn'irisin; 1' a hollow, open-ended body having a closed flexing end constituting means when flexed inwardly ''or producing an internal pressure within the body. a porous applicator member having an outer applying lace arranged on said open end ot the body through which the powdered contents is dispensed on the outer applying tace when the flexing end ot the body is flexed inwardly. and means within the closed flexing end 'for limiting thc inward llcxing thereoin and lor insuring a normal outward flexing ot the same when inward pressure thereon is discontinued.
