' UNITED STATES 1,6122zs PATENT ortica ARTHURSCHOY, F NEW YORK, Y
Application led November 10, 1925. Serial No. 68,051. f Y
lu which is bevelled in a manner well known in the art, and which is intended to slide over the face of the jambmortise plate and to engagetherewith automatically.
Owing to the bevellingl of the noses of these spring latch bolts they are apt to lit loosely in their mortises, so that unless the lock bolts also are shot into the mortise plates there is a degree of looseness and play which may result in door vibration and rat'-,
tling under variations of air pressure' on opposite sides of the door, which it is the main object of my invention to obviate, and which I accomplish by means of an adj ust* able auxiliary shoulder plate for engagement with the flat locking side of a` spring latch bolt, so that looseness or play of the said spring latch bolt in its mortise will be prevented, and a close fit insured between the parts involved. .f
To this end my invention consists essentially of an auxiliary shoulder plate mounted on the inner side of the door jamb plate adjacent to the spring lock bolt mortise by means which provide for its adjustment with f relation thereto as hereinafter set forth, and
described and claimed specilically,-a distinctive feature being the utilization, as a mount and support for my said auxiliary shoulder plate, of the usual lateral tongue extension of the jamb plate provided for engagement with the bevelled end of the spring latch bolt in the usual way.
In the accompanying drawings, I'` illustrate a practical embodimentA of the essential features of' my invention asl applied to a door jamb plate made for the accommodation of both a door lock bolt, and a spring latch door bolt, although I do notlimit myself in this respect, since' my adjustable auxiliary bolt shoulder may be provided on a jamb mortise plate designed only for engagement with a spring latch bolt of the character designated, nor do I limit myself to the identical form and construction ofparts shown herein by way of exemplification, since changes may be made in minor details, and equivalent mechanical expedicnts resorted to with like results, and without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
`With this understandingz- Fig. 1, represents a fateview of a door jamb plate of the duplex bolt mortise type hereinbefore referred to, my auxiliary bolt bearing shoulder being ,in retracted position;
Fig. 2, is a view like unto Fig. 1, showing my auxiliary bolt bearing shoulder plate slightly advanced to contract the area of the mortise aperture;
Fig. 3, is alike view showing my auxiliary bearing'shoulder still further advanced to contract the area of the mortise aperture;
Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the rear side of the door mortise jambl plate shown in the preceding figures;
Fig. 5, is a perspective view of my auxiliary bolt bearing shoulder plate;
Fig. 6, is a sectional detail, upon an enlarged scale, taken upon plane of line 6-6, Fig. l;l Y
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail, also upon an enlarged scale, taken upon plane of line' 7-7, Fig. 1;
'Fig'. 8, is a sectional detail` showing a modification.
In the type of door amb mortise plate P, shown as embodying a practical adaptation of my invention, s, s, represent the holes for the screws by which the plate is secured to the door jamb, l the lock bolt mortise, and
. l, the spring latch bolt mortise, p, being the usual lateralextension of the mortise plate P, provided for contactual engagement with the bevelle'd nose of a spring lat-ch bolt as heretofore, except that in the present case said lateral extension p, of the mortise plate P, has adjustably mounted on its inner side my auxiliary bolt shoulder bearing plate a.
'lhis combination of my auxiliary bolt shoulder bearing plate a, with the lateral extension p, of the jamb mortise plate I` may obviously be effected by resort to various mechanical expedients, of which a prefel-red form is shown in this connection, oonsisting inv inturning the horizontal edres of the lateral extension p, of the plateoP, to form retaining flanges p', p', as shown more particularly in Figs. 4 and 6, of the drawings; in forming said extension p, with a horizontal bevel-edged slot p2, and in prolll riding a bevel headed binding screw ,(1, for engagement with a. female screw thread u', formed for the puposev in said auxiliary plate a, as shown more particularly iu Figs. 6 and 7, of the drawings, whereby the said auxiliary shoulder plate a, may be adjustably secured in position according to requirements.
The chamfered or bevelled nose of a spring latch bolt is indicated at af, in Fig. 7, of the drawings, illustrating its co-relation to the lateral extension p,- of the door janib plate P, in sliding thereover.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 8, of the drawings, an alternative structure of clamping means is shown in which the auxiliary shoulder plate a, is formed with a screw stud for engagement with a nut n, the Circular edge of which is bcvelled to fit the bevel of the slot p2, in the jamb plate.
No claim is made broadly to a flanged plate in this connection.
What I claim as luy invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:--
l. A door jalnb plate having a. lateral extension havingr its horizontal edges inturned to form parallel retaining flanges, an auxiliary bolt shoulder' bearing plate slidably fitted between said fianges, and means passed through said bearingvplate and into said extension between said fianges.
2. A door jamb mo'rtise plate havilw a lateral extension with its horizontal edges inturncd to form parallel retaining flanges, an auxiliary bolt shoulder bearing plate slidably fitted between said flanges, the said extension being formed with a horizontally extended bevel-edged slot, and a screw member engaged in the bearing plate and having a bleveled head engaged in said bevel-edged s ot.
