My invention relates to locks and has special reference to knob or handle locks.
An object ot the invention is to provide a novel and improved lock of this character Another object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character which is simple and durable in construction, and which may be easily applied, and in which the parts thereof inaybe easily assembled in proper position. 1

My improved lock is shown applied to a cabinet door 2 having a three point latching device of a common construction. As shown,
this three point latching device is provided` with a rotatable hub 4 having a laterally projecting lug or latch'bolt 6, and latch bolts 8 that are in the form of flat rods having their inner ends pivotally connected with ears on the hub 4 and their upper ends extending through and guided by straps 10 secured adjacent the upper and lower ed es of the door.' With thls type of three polnt latching device, upon turning the -hub 4 1n one direction, the latch bolt 6 may be swung beyond the longitudinal edge of the door and the latch bolts 8 projected beyond the upper and lower edges of the door, as shown in Fig. 1, and upon turning the hub 4 inthe opposite direction, the three latch bolts may be retracted, as shown in Fig. 3.
As shown, my improved lock is provided with a rose or escutcheon 12 which, when used in connection with a three point latching device as above described, is secured by screws 13 on the front side of the door op posite the hub -4, and is further provided with a knob or handle 14 having a cylindrical shank that extends through and is mounted for turning movement in the rose 12. The inner end of the handle shank is provided with a reduced portion 15 forming a shoulder v16 that is arranged adjacent a shoulder 17 on the outer face'of the rose. The rear end of the shank is provided with a rearwardlyA extending spindle 18 which is square in cross-section and extends through a clearance opening in the cabinet door 2. The hub 4 of the three point latching device is mounted on this spindle and is held thereon by a spring-washer andv nut 19 which `holds the hub against'the rear side of the door. With this construction it will be apparent that by turning the knob or handle 14, the three latch bolts of the latching device may be projected and retracted into and out of latching position, as above described:
The shank of the handle 14 constitutes the cylinder ofv a pin tumbler lock having the usual pin tumbler chambers 20 on an axially extending key-operated plug 22 mounted therein carrying the pin tumbler sections 23. A set screw 24 is screw-threaded through an aperture in the cylindrical handleshank and the key-operated plug is rovided -with a slot 26 which receives the inner end of the set screw, the turning movement of the keysoperated plug into and out of locking` position being limited by engagement of the end walls of the slot 26 with the screw 24. A
stud, or pin 28 is secured in a socket in the rear end of the key-operated plug by a pin 29, and has its rear end arranged eccentriycally to the axis of the lug and received in a transverse notch 30 1n a bolt 32, which extends through a transverse aperture in the reduced portion 15 of the handle shank. When the handle is in door latching position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one end of the bolt 32 is arranged opposite a locking notch 34 in the escutcheon so that upon turning the key-operated plug in a counter-clockwise direction by means of its key, the eccentric pin '28 will act to shift the bolt 32 to position said end thereof in said notch. The end of the bolt substantially fits between the side Walls of the notch 34 so that when it is projected therein the handle is securely locked from turning movement ands-thus the bolts of the three point latcliing device `are held-in latching position. To unlock the lock, the key-operated plug is given a quarter -turn in the reverse direction, which, through the eccentric pin 28, acts to shift the locking bolt 32 to retract its end from the locking notch 34, whereupon the handle may be vturned to release the latch bolts of the three point latching device, and the cabinet door maybe opened. When the bolt 32 is thus shifted to disengage its end from the locking notch 34, its other endis projected into an elongated notch or slot 36 in the esc'utcheon 12. This notch 36 extends 'beneath a portion of the shoulder 17 and is of suitable length to .permit the required quarter turningmovement of the handle in a clockwise direction to release the latching device. ,The end wallspof the notch 36 are so positioned that when the handle is turned .in a counter-clockwise direction to door notch 34, it being then merely necessary' to give the key-operated plug a. quarter turn to project the bolt 32 into the locking notch 34 to lock the handle, as above described.
It will be apparent that by limiting the turning movement of the handle in locking position in the manner above described, a perfect alinement of the bolt 32 with the recess 34 and the pin tumblers with their chambers is insured which permits the plug to be turned to locking position and the key to be withdrawn so as to leave the door latched. In the embodiment shown, when the handle is turned so that the door is unlatched, the key can not be Withdrawn, there being but one set of chambers for the tumblers, and this is the preferred arrangement. When the lock is used in connection with a three point cabinet latching device, as illustrated and described, such limiting of the turning movemrnt of the handle eliminates adjusting and lifting in the assembling to bring the bolts of the latching device into proper position. n p
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits various modilications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A lock of the class decribed having, in
combination, a handle having a shank, a rose in which said shank is mounted for turning movement into and out of a predetermined angular position, a bolt carried by the shank and adapted to be shifted transversely thereof, said rose having a locking notch adapted to receive one end of the bolt when said shank is in said angular position so as to lock the handle from turning movement, and an elongated notch adapted to receive the other end ot said bolt when the bolt is out of said locking notch, and key-controllable locking mechanism for shifting said bolt to project the end thereof into and retract it from said locking notch when said shank is in said position.
2. A lock of the class described having, in combination, a handle having a shank, a rose in which said shank is mounted for turninor movement into and out ot a predetermined angular position, connection between said shank and rose adapted to be controlled to lock the handle from turning movement and to release the handle when said shank is in said predetermined angular position, yconnection between the shank and rose for preventing turning movement of the shank in one direction beyond said predetermined angular position, but permitting limited turning movement in the opposite direction When said shank is released, and pin tumbler locking mechanism mounted in the handle for controlling said rst mentioned connection.
3. A lock of the class described having, in combination, a handle having a shank, a rose in which said shank is mounted for turning movement into and out of a predetermined angular position, a bolt carried by the shank and adapted to be shifted transversely thereof, said rose having a locking notch adapted to receive one end of the bolt when said shank is in said angular position so as to lock the handle from turning movement and having an elongated slot for receiving the other end of the bolt when the bolt is shifted out of said locking notch for preventing turning movement of the shank in one direction beyond said predetermined angular position, but permitting limited turning movement in the opposite direction, and pin tumbler locking mechanism for thus shifting said bolt.

A lock of the class described having, in combination, a handle having a shank, a rose in which said shank is mounted for turning movement into and out of a predetermined angular position, a bolt mounted for longitudinal movement in a Itransverse aperture in said shank, said rose having a locking notch adapted to receive the end of the bolt when said shank is in said angular position so as to lock the handle from turning movement, a pin tumbler lock having its keyoperated plug mounted for turning movement in said shank, and a rearwardly rojecting pin mounted on the inner en of said plug eccentrically to its axis, said bolt having a slot for receiving said pin, whereby the bolt may be shifted longitudinally by turning sai plug to project the end thereol:l into and retract it from said locking notch whensaid shank is in said position. 5. A lock of the class described having, in combination, a handle having a shank, a rose in which said-shank is mounted for turning movement into and-out of a predetermined angular position, a bolt mounted for longitudinal movement in a transverse aperture in said shank, said rose havin a locking notch adapted to receive one en of the bolt when said shank is in said angular position so as to lock the handle from turningmovement, and an elongated notch adapted to receive the other end of said bolt when said holtis out of said locking notch, a pin tumbler lock having its key-operated plu mounted for turning' movement in sai shank, and a rearwardly projecting pin mounted on the inner end of said plug eccentrically to its axis, said bolt having a slot for receiving said pin whereby the bolt may be 'shifted longitudinall by turning said plug to project the end thereof into and retract it from saidloeking notch when said shank is in said position.
6. A lock of the class described having, in combination, a rose, a handle having a shank extending through vsaid vrose and mounted for turning movement therein, a bolt mountedl for longitudinal movement in a transverse aperture insaid shank, said rose havin av locking notch adapted to receive the en of the bolt when said shank is in said angular position so as to lock the handle from turn. ing movement, a pin tumbler lock having its key-operated p ugmounted yfor turning movement in said shank, means for limitinthe turning movement of said key-operate plug comprising a screw screw-threaded through said shank andv a slot in said lug for receiving the end of said screw, the head of said screw being covered by said rose, and a pin and slot connection between said keyoperated plug and said bolt whereby the bolt may be shifted by turning said plug to project the endpthereof into and to retract it from said locking notch when said shank is in said angular position.
