E. A. RICHARDSON SPORTING. SHOE, Filed April 20, 1926 INVENTOR.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented nee-g1, 1926;
UNITED STATES;
PATENT "'QFFICEQ" nnwann a. nxouannson, or MANSFIELD, massaonusn'r'rs. Y

I Application filed 1 m 20, 1926. "Serial 103,269.
y This invention relates to an improved shoe worn' more particularly by contestants 1D athleticsports, and has for its object .to pro-' vide a shoe ofthis character that is worn more particularly by runners and in which a stiffening metal plate is inserted between 'the inner and outer 'soles'thereof, the plate having anti-slipping spurs or projecting members arranged. to extend out through openings in the. outer sole, the plate bei-n slotted longitudinally preferably at its mid dle portion' to permit the outer sole to be fastened through this plate to the'inner sole by sewing or by other suitable fastenin means.
With these and otherobjects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. a
' Inhe accompanying drawings:-
' Figure 1 is a bottom view showing a portion of a shoe with my improved stiffeningplate, shown in dotted'lines, as being inserted between the inner and. outer soles theireof.
- through the shoe showing the inner and outer soles as stitched together through the slot in the plate.
, Figure 3 is a perspective view of my improved stiffening plate showing the central longitudinal slot therein and a plurality of spurs riveted to the metal plate.
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation throughone of the spurs detached.
In the building of athletic shoes, particularly those worn by runners .in athletlc c0ntests, it is found'of advantage to insert a.
stifl'enin metal plate between the innerand outer-so es thereof andthis plate is rovided with a plurality of spurs exten ing out through the outer sole as an anti-slipping means; also, it isafound'of advantage to be able to sew the outer sole to the" inner sole along its middle portion and topermit this to be done I have slit the platelongitudinally' for a portion of its length and through which the stitches may be passed without being interfered with by the plate; also if desired other fastening means may be passed through this slot; and the following is ade tailed description of the present embodiment of my invention and showing one re 2 is a central sectional elevation limited only 1 means byfwhichthes'e advantageous results ybe. ocomplishedzv v n. VVIth reference to the drawings, 10. desi nates the thin metal plate, which is formed inoutline somewhat in the shape of the shoe openings or holes formed in the outer sole and this outer sole is then secured to-the inner sole, preferably by a sewing operation aboiit itsouter edge. Also, it is found in shoes of this character of advantage to sew the-two soles together through the middle portion thereof as at 18, which sewing o1 fastening o eration is permitted by the slot I 14 formed t rough it and through whichthe stitches pass, the sewing being extended from therear of the plate towards the front or toe of the shoe to or beyondits middle por tion, the slot 14 in the plate being of a length to permitsuch sewing operation.
I do not wish 'to be restricted to fastening the inner and outer soles together through this slot 14 in the plate by sewing, as other J fastening means may be employed if desired. The foregoing description isdirected solely towards the construction illustrated, but
I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and claims.
I claim:
of the plate about its margin and extending out through openings in the outer sole and said plate having a narrow longitudinal slot extending from its rear edge forwardly for, a portion of its length. p
by the terms of the appended 1 In a sporting shoe, an inner sole, an -outer sole, a metal plate secured intermediate said soles, spurs secured to the outer surface a 2. In a sporting shoe, an inner sole, .an an elongatedlongitudinally disposed relaouter sole, :1 flexible metal plate secured betively narrow slot extending from its rear tween said soles, a plurality of spurs secured edge a distance at least half the length of ,to the outer surface of said plate about its the platethrough which said soles may be 5 marginal edge and extending outwardly secured together.
through openings in the outer sole, the mid- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. dle portion of said plate being provided with EDWARD A. RICHARDSON.
