CONTROL FOP, RADIO RECEIVING SETS AND SIMILAR, DEVICES.
Applicatioafiled September 20, 1926. Serial No. 136,625.
This invention relates to controls for "adio receiving sets and similar devices.
in radio sets heretofore constructed, it is the usual practice to provide projecting disc wheels which may be manipulated 'by the operator to tune the set. These disc wheels have universally projected, through slots in the front of the cabinet and have, consequently, been easily operated only by a person when seated in front of the device. When the person is standing in front of the device, a very awkward position of the hands results when it is attempted to operate the control device or disc wheel.
This invention is designed to overcome the defects noted above and objects of such invention are to provide a novel form of disc wheel and associated cabinet forming a radio control device so that it may be readily operated either by a seated or standing); operator.
Further objects are to provide a device in which the disc wheel projects both from the front and from the top of the cabinet so as to be easily engaged either at the front or at the top of the device, and to so construct the front panel that it hides the upwardly projecting portion of the disc wheel and thus does not allow the disc wheel to detract from the ornamental appearance of the apparatus.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional View through the device, such view corresponding to a section on the line 1--1 of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a front View ofthe device;
Figure 3 is a plan View thereof.
Referring to the drawings, it will be see; that the usual type of radio cabinet has been indicated as provided with a base 1, a top 2, and a front panel 3. However, the front panel has been extended beyond the top of the cabinet, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1. Also, in addition to the slot 4 formed in the front panel, a slot 5 is formed in the top 2.
A control device, such as a disc wheel 6 is mounted upon the shaft 7 of a tuning; instrumentality 8. This disc wheel, as may be seen from Figures 2 and 3, is preferably provided with knurled outer margins between which a plain portion or dial 9 may be position-ed. This disc wheel, it is to be noted particularly, projects not only through the slot in the front panel, but also through the slot in the top of the cabinet.
The purpose of this construction is to permit the ready operation of the disc wheel or control device either from the front of the cabinet by a seated operator, or from the top of the cabinet by a standing operator. Thus, in whatever position the operator is placed adjacent the cabinet he may readily operate the device and he does not have to place his hands in an awkward position when standing, as has heretofore been necessary. Instead, the same ease of tuning is secured for a standing operator as for a seated operator.
If desired, the bottom 1 of the cabinet may have a cut-away portion 10 to accommodate the bottom of the disc wheel if it is found necessary.
It will be seen that the device is very simple and does not detract from the ornamental appearance of the apparatus, although it provides for operation of the control device in a novel manner in addition to the usual manner of operation.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination of a radio cabinet having a bottom, a top and a front panel, a tuning instrumentality mounted within said cabinet, a disc wheel controlling said tuning instrumentality, said disc wheel projecting through the front panel and through the top.
2. In a radio receiving apparatus the combination of a cabinet having a bottom, a top and a front panel, said top and said front panel having slots therethrough located in the same vertical plane, a disc wheel having its major portion located within said cabinet and projecting through the slot in the front panel and through the slot in the top, and a tuning device connected to said disc wheel and operated thereby.
3. In a radio apparatus the combination of a cabinet having a bottom, a top and a V front panel, said top and front panel having slots therein located in the same vertical tuning device operatively coupled to said disc Wheel.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 1 have hereunto set my hand at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of \Visconsin.
