w. A. E. QUILTER THERMIONIC DEVICE Filed Feb. 26, 1921 nmntoz Patented Dec. 14, 1926.
UNITEE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAIVI ALFRED EDWARD QUILTER, O1 LOIQZDON. ENGLAND, ASSZGNOR TO RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. A COBPGRATIGBT OF DELAWARE.
THERFIZ'QNIC BEVICE.
This invention relates to thermionic devices or valves, and its object is to provide a valve in whicn the size of the apertures in the grid can be adjusted for varying the 5 effect of the grid.
According to this invention 1 construct the grid of the valve of two parts capable of relative movement and I provide means for moving one ot the parts rclativcl to the other so that the apertures in the one part register more or le-s with the apertures in the other part. and thus the elliect ve apertures of the whole grid are varied.
Preferably the grid consists of two coaxial cylinders the inner one of which is fixed. while the outer one can he turned round the common axis.
Each cylinder may conveniently he formed of a helix of wire, the two helices heing of the same pitch.
The invention is illustrated by vay of example in the accom anying: drawing, Figure 1 of which is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a 'alve const ucted in accordance therewi h: Figure 2 is a hor zoutal section on the line X Y. Figure 1 and Figure 3 shows a modification.
The grid consists or" two co-axial wire helices ot the pitch: the inner one D. is fixed while the outer one (l. is mounted hetween the top hearing ll. and the bottom hearing: E. and can he turned round the common axis.
The movement oi the outer cvlinder may he eitected hy an electromagnet havinga ring shaped core 0. with a gap P. in it, while close to this core is a soft iron pole piece H. mounted on a rod G secured to the outer cylinder so that the po ition of the outer cylinder depends u on the strene'th ct the current throuch coi K. outside the valve glass hulb energizing the magnet.
The theorv 0t operation of the modifica' tion shown hy Figs. 1 and 9 is thousrht to he as follows: The lines ot force produced by the coil TC tend to pass verti ally dew.- ward thru the core 0. However. the lines ot force in the immediate viciuitv ot the air gap P will he curved to a eeusiderahle degree. This distortion ot the magnetic field in the viciuitv ot the P will eai a di tortion of the entire mae netic tield passing" thru the core 0. The maenet c ie d will therefore act on any magnetic body and will tend to move said body into a position epends upon the current passing 'h and heating the wire.
ther case a spring F is provided so to move the outer cylinder C in .se direction and thus control the outer cylinder C by the ot' the wire Q.
particularly described and nature of my said invention in what manner the same is to be percd. i declare that what I claim is A. thermionic valve in which the grid ructcd ot' a plurality of metalhc parts having; apertures. said parts being capable of relative inovcn'ient one to the other, so that tli active apertures ot the grid may be va ied.
It thermionic valve in which the grid is constructed of a plurality of metallic parts each hivina' sin'uhir apertures. said parts 1 ncine can: the otlz ml? of relative movement one to er, so that the effective apertures ot the Q'i'lil he varied.
con
it thermionic valve in which the grid sts of two suhstantially co-axlal cylin- (lcrs having apertures. one of said cylinders he i n o;
lured and the other capable of movement around its axis. whereby the efiective apertures may he varied.
. A thermionic valve in which the grid consists of two eo-aXial cylinders one within the other. having; apertures. the inner cylinder heiurg fixed and the outer cylinder capal le of movement around its axis, wherehv the eilective apertures may be varied.
11*l'l l(l(l 01 two parts with co-axial spiral euients ot the ame pitch. said elements heine; capahl A. thermionic valve in whic the grid structed of plurality of metallic parts inp perture means or causing relative it ot Fflltl parts to vary the effective sures of the grid. means tor returnwe nrrts to their normal pos tion.
1 tn nv .14 valve in which the grid is e of relative movement one to other. so that the effective apertures of d may he varied.
7 A thermionic valve in which the grid is constructed of two parts having apertures, said parts being capable of relative movement one to the other, so that the etlective apertures of the grid may be varied, and an electromagnet for producing said relative movement comprising an armature and a winding, one of which is attached to the movable part of the grid.
8. A thermionic valve in which the grid is constructed of two parts having apertures, said parts being capable of movement one to the other, so that the efifective apertures of the grid may be varied, and means for causing said relative movement comprising an armature attached to the movable part of the grid and a stationary Winding co-operat ing with said armature.
9. A thermionic valve in which the grid is constructed of a plurality of metallic parts having apertures and means for causing relative movement of said parts to "ary the efiective apertures of the grid.
