Application filed August 28,1925. seria nogsaoss.
This invention relatesto the censtruction of rail joints or splice bars, and hasfo-rits object. the provision f of a novel form of splice bar having an I-beam distribution of i 1 5 metal, and having its centralportion thickclass in which the metal is distributed so as to give the greatest strength.
A further obj ect s to provide a barof this class that may readily be rolled in a standard rolling'mill, and rdue to it s'shape will not require the frequent and expensive dress-I ing of the rolls such as is necessary with the bars of this class now used in the art.
A still further object is to provide a bar of the class described having the novel'de' sign, construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings-'- I Figure l is an end elevation showing my improved rail-joint or splice bar as used on a-railwaytrack. i
' Figure 2'is a plan showing the web of my improved splice bar in longitudinal section. v
Figure 3'is a similar sectionalplan showing the contour of'the web of almodified form of splice bar. I
' Figure 4 is a sectional plan, similar to i Figures 2 and 3, showing a further modification in the outline of the web of the splloe bar. V 1
Referring more'particularly tothe draw- I ings, the numeral 2 designates the abut-ting track rails which are connected or goined by the rail joint or splice bars A o vention and bolts 3. I
' The bars A are formed of a rolled metal shape similar to the standard I-beam, that.
is, they have an I beam distribution of metal r and comprise a bearing head portion4, web portion'5and base flange portion 6.
The head portion 4 is adapted to engage the underside of the rail heads, and the base flange 6 is adapted to overlie the inclined top surfaces of the track rail flanges.
throughout the rail joint. V
The formation of he reinforcing or thick 'ened web portion by gradually increasing 7 this in-,
scope ofmy invention as defined inthe ap- V The web 5 extends perpendicular from a point intermediate the longitudinal edges of 7 the has .4 0 a point intermediatetheflongr tudinal edges ofthe baseffiange 6, and is 3,

and tapers "either gradually, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 or in steps as shown in Figure 4 toward both ends. It will be especiallynoted that the outside face of the web is straight and that all the variation in thickness'is on the inside face of the web,
so that the same 'length bolts may be used its thickness along one side face eliminates 1 the necessity offorming deep pockets in the rolls for diefrolling and, therefore, elimi- 1 nates the necessity for constant and eXpen-l sive roll dressingas-is necessary when rolling bars havingabrupt changes in cross section.
Thesize and shape of the bars A are such that they will be spaced an appreciable distance from'the web of the track rails, that is, the head 4 and base flange 6 will wedge against the under side oft-he rail heads and the inclined top of the rail flange, respec tively, so as to prevent the inner face of the web of the splice bar from'extending inwardly beyond the plane of the side .face of the rail head, thereby forming a large open. space 10 between-the rail web and the splice bar web through which rail bonds maybe freely passed, and furthermore;due
=to thenovel design of the present splice bar the strains from the track rails will be better: distributed throughfthe splice bar when itislthus positioned. V
While I have shown and described certain specific embodiments of my, invention, it
will be understood that I do not wish to be V limited thereto since various modifications maybe made without departing from. the
