UNITED` STATES FLOYD WILLIAM SCHOOLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CHECK HOLDER.
Application ledIJecember 17, 1923. Serial No. 681,286.
My invention relates to improvements in check holders, and particularly that type of check holder employed for holding the checks given by waiters and waitresses to o patrons for the purposes of denoting the amount of the bill, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object ofA my invention is to providea IH check holder of the type described that is an improvement over the check holder disclosed in my co-pending application for patent on check holder, Serial No. 603,015 patented Dec. 9, 1924, No. 1,518,458, in which I la havedisclosed a check holder consisting of a. single piece of metal, a portion thereof bent bacli upon itself and sheared so as to form cooperating cutting edges by means of which portions of the check may be sev- ZG ered. Mypresent invention involves the provision of. a body member of which the cooperating cutting edges form a part, and which is fashioned to permit the suspension ofthe device with the cutting members at the lower end thereof substantially in registration with the lower end ofthe cheeks.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type descrihedin which the body portion for supporting the pad of checks is provided with means permitting the ready removal of the check pad by manual force, yet which eiciently prevents the unintentional dislodgement of the pad from the holder.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is relatively light in weight, which is rigid in construction, durable, and thoroughly practical commercially. 4o
in the following specification, andthe novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming' part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a. rear elevation of the mechanism illustrated in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the mechanism illustrated in Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a sectional-view along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I make use Vholder 1. The construction and function of Other objects and advantages willappear of a body member 1, having outwardly eX- tending side walls 2 on each side thereof extending substantially the entire length of the body member. The purpose of these side walls 2 is to prevent lateral movement G0 of the pad ofchecls such as the pad 3 which are placed upon the body member and also to make the body member as rigid as possible.
TheV side walls 2 are each provided with diametrically opposed inwardly extending fingers l which fingers are intended to lie, between adjacent checks in the pad 3 and to prevent movement of the pad away from the 7l) these lingers l is clearly set forth in the aforementioned application, Serial No. 603,015.
A pair of upwardly extending lugs or stop members 5 is disposed at the upper edge of the body member 1. These stop members 5 are for the purpose of preventing longitudinal movement of the pad of checks 3 relative to the body member. These stop members 5 also are constructed and function after the manner set forth in the aforementioned co-pending application.
Means for rendering the removal of the pad 3 from the holder 1 relatively easy is provided in a pair of upwardly extending indentures 6 on the back wall 7 of the body member 1. These indentures 6 are clearly shown in Figure Ll and are disposed intermediate the fingers l in the stop` members 5 so as to lift the extreme upper portion of the pad 3 slightly away from the adjacent wall of the body member 1, thereby permitting the introduction of the finger nail or a knife between the pad and the holder so that the upper end of the pad may be lifted free of the stop members 5 whereupon the pa'd es may be manually moved longitudinally out of engagement with the holder.
The shearing or cutting elements of my improved check holder as heretofore stated, are disposed at the lowermost end of the holder whenV the holder 1 is suspended as by means of a clasp 8 secured to the holder 1 at 9 and having a fastening clip 10 at the upper end thereof for attachment to the belt of the user. When the holder is suspended in this manner and the shearing or cutting members are at the lowermost end of the clip, these members may be easily operated, and it is not necessary to provide a relatively long chain for supporting the check holder as would necessarily be the case where the shearing or cutting members are at the top of the holder.
The shearing or cutting membersv em-V ployed in my improved check holder are formed by providing a rearwardly inclined shearing member 11 at the eXtreme lower end of the body member 1. rlfhis member 11 has substantially the contour shown in Figure 2. The cooperating or complementary cutting member consists of a triangularfopening 12 sheared through a portion 13 of the rear wall 7 of the body member 1,
f Vwhich portion 13 is in turn formed by shearing a portion of the rear wall away and in subsequently bending that portion at 14 back upon the lower end of the check holder so that the outer end of the portion 13, in which the triangular opening 12 is formed, is in registration with the cutting memf ber 11.
lThe opening 12 has its side walls arranged so that they just touch the side walls of the cutting portion 11 and that port-ion of the check holder in which the opening 12 is provided is inclined toward the member 11, as shown in Figure 1. A pair of stop members 15 is provided adjacent to the opening 12 for the purpose of limiting the movenient of the check placed upon the inner surface cf the portion 13 of the check holder for engagement with the cutting member 11 when the portion 13 is moved into engagement with the member 11. Y
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may `be readily understood. In
placing the pad of ehecksin my improved holder, itv isv necessary to separate a portion ofthe checks from the remainder of theA checks in the pad and to slide these checks between the fingers land the wall of the body member 1 until the upper edge of the 1 portionpl until the edge'of the checkvstrikes and is stopped bythe stop members 15. At this time, manual pressure is brought to bear upon the portion 13 and the portion 13 is moved with the check thereupon into engagement with the Vcutting member 11 in such a manner as to permit the member 11 to pass through the triangular opening 12 and to shear a portion of the check away, thus leaving a V-shaped recess in the edge of the check opposite that numeral on the check which is for the purpose of designating the amount to be paid the cashier' by the patron upon leaving the restaurant or lunch room in which the device is in use.
lt will be noted that my improved holder' may be used at all times while suspended from a cli) 10 havinO' coo eratino' indenturesl 1S by means of which the clip may be held against unintentional movement upon the fabric belt or thelike or upon a portion of the ordinary type of apron worn by the waiter. 'lhe fact that the shearing or cutting portions of the check holder are at the lowerinost end of the check holder renders it unnecessary to remove the check holder from the clip 10. y
In removing the pad of checks 3 from the holder, the indentures' 6 as stated heretofore, provide a space between the upper end of the pad and the adjacent wall of the holder Y 1 by means of which the finger nail may be introduced so as to lift the pad outwardly from the holder 1 and free the stop members 5., Y
I claim:
A cheek holder and punch comprising a. body member adapted to underliepthe entire area of the bottom of the pad of checks, said body memberhaving a means for supporting the body member, said means being disposed adjacent to the end of the. pad where the checks are severed from the pad, a cutter fashioned from the body member and being: disposed at the opposite end from 'said supportingVV means, a ticket" holder stamped out from the body member and being bent so as to have its free 'enddisposed adjacent to the cutter, said ticket holderV having an opening therein for receiving the cutter, whereby the cutter is adapted to punch a ticket, and stops carried by "said ticketv holder for' positioning the ticket with respect to the cutter and permitting uniform perfor-ations.
