PATENT OFFICE.
BYRON E. BOWLES, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOVJA.
TIMER.
Application filed January 18, 1923.
The invention relates to timers of the type used in connection with internal cornbustion engines, and has for its object to provide a circuit maker and breaker of this character wherein a raceway is provided for a roller, said raceway having conductor inserts at spaced points, the opposite sides of the conductor members and raceway being bevelled at a greater angle than the walls of a grooved roller. which moves over the raceway. The difiiercnt an les of the raceway and walls of the groove of the roller insuring a positive contact and preventing a poor contact on account of oil adhering to the surface of the roller.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forthpshown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what s claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing 1- Figure 1 is a view looking into the rear of the timer.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view through the timer taken on line 22 of Figure 1. r
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the cylindrical casing of the timer and 2 a. shaft extendingaxially into the timer, which shaft is driven by an engine. Disposed within the timer casing 1 is an annular flange 3 formed from insulating 1naterial, which flange forms a raceway for the conductor roller 4. Heretofore conductor' rollers have been formed cylindrically shaped with a flat periphery, which rollers do not contact positively with the segmentally shaped conductor plates 5 carried by the insulating flange 3, incident to oil gathering on the same, and incident to the wear of the roller whereby particles worn from the roll Serial No. 613.322.
and at the same tinieinsuring close contact 7 incident to the wear of the roller, the raceway 3 or the conductor plate 5. The walls 8 of the roller 4' are preferably at a forty-five degree angle and as the Walls 6 are at a sixty degree angle, a close sharp contact is in- 'sured.
The conductor roller 4 is carried by a frame 9, which frame is pivoted at 10 to a sleeve 11 carried by the shaft 2 and is held in close engagement with the flange 3 during the rotation of the shaft 2 by means of the coiled spring 12. one end of which is connected at 13 to the sleeve 11, and the other end at 14 to an arm 15, carried by the frame 9. It will be seen that during the rotation of the shaft 2 in the direction of the arrow a that the spring 12 will hold the conductor roller t in close engagement with the flange 3 and the contacts 5. 7
From the above it will be seen that a timer is provided, which is positive in its operation, and one wherein poor contact, incident to lubricant, is obviated and at the same time positive contact is provided between the roller and the conductor plates 5 in such a manner that a sharp engagement between the conductor roller 4 and th e plates 5 is ob tained.
' The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with a timer comprising casing, an annular flange disposed within the casing, conductor plates imbedded in the inner periphery of the flange, a shaft extending axially into the casing, a conductor roller carried by said shaft and engaging the annular. flange, of means for forming sharp edge oontacts'between the roller and the con ductor plates, said means comprising spaced bevelled flanges carried by the roller and forming an annular groove, said annular flange and plates having their opposite sides bevelled at an angle greater than the bevel of the bevelled flanges of the roller, and the bottom of said roller groove being spaced from the annular flange and plates.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature :evaon n. eowtns.
