WILLIAM L. GODFREY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES W. GODFREY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PISTOL-STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,766, dated March 16, 1875 application filed March 4, 1875.
CASE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. GODFREY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pistol-Stocks; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in pistol-stocks; and the invention consists in a pistol-stock constructed of an y plastic material and surrounded with a metallic frame, which incloses and is affixed to the edge of said stock, and also the aforesaid stock combined with a metallic plate, substantially in the manner hereinafter described.
The expense attending the construction of ivory and pearl stocks for pistols, and the readiness with which wood becomes depolished and defaced, seem to create a demand for a stock which shall be at once light, strong, inexpensive, and ornamental, and therefore composition stocks have been experimented with to some extent for this purpose, but, it is believed, unsuccessfully, for the reason, partly, that the thin edges of the composition are liable to chip off and fracture, and are weakened by the screw-hole. By my invention this is wholly obviated, as will be seen from the following description and accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is afront elevation of my pistolstock; and Fig. 2, a cross-section of same, taken on line at m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents a pistol-stock, constructed of any desirable composition or plastic material,
and of any size and form desired, and ornamented or not. This stock is formed in suitable molds while the composition is in a plastic state, and it is then allowed to harden, retaining the shape the mold has imparted to it. A strip of any suit-able metal, B, formed to cover the edges of the stock, or each section or half of it, is then fitted around these edges, so as to wholly inclose them within the metal strip in a neat and substantial manner, as shown in Fig. 1.
This metallic frame not only secures the edges of the composition from chipping off, but it also adds materially to the strength of the stock and to its ornamental appearance, since it binds and surrounds the stock as with a frame of metal.
Since composition stocks are necessarily weakened by the hole through which the confining-screw passes, I combine with the stock, either by embedding it into the stock while plastic, or otherwise, a metal strengtheningplate, 0, through a hole in which the contining-screw passes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pistol-stock constructed of composition or plastic material, in combination with a metallic framing entirely surrounding and affixed to the edges of said stock or the cheekpieces thereof, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. A composition pistol-stock having a metallic strengthening-plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
. WM. L. GODFREY.
