UNITED STATES GEORGE A. HOFFMANN, GF BLOOIVIFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
FINGER SLIP.
Application led April 29, 1925.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a device for application to the lingers of an infant to effect a permanent cure of the habit where there is a tendency or inclination on the part of the subject to suck the ngers.
TWith this purpose in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention. i@ f 'l Figures 2 and 3 are respectively vertical and transverse sectional views on the planes indicated by the lines 2 2 and 3 3 of Figure l.
1Unlike devices of this general character, the present invention is not designed to preclude the subject placing the finger in the mouth but to make the operation obnoxious so that he is finally broken of the habit. The device comprises a nger stall l and wrist-band 2 connected as by a web-portion The web portion finger stall and wristband are integrally connected and of reticulated structure, being preferably of open crochet construction. It is, therefore, washable and hence sanitary. The open stitch exposes the ngers, preventing the drawing of the lingers through as a result of perspiration.
The absorbent quality of the thread of which the device is constructed is adapted for holding a harmless medicated solution for a period of timeand such a solution may be used in connection with the invention to create a disagreeable taste in the mouth of the subject. rPhe device, being of soft material, cannot injure the face or eyes when the hand is rubbed across the face, and the open and rough stitch creates an unpleasant feeling within the mouth without Serial No. 26,726.
harming the latter or the gums and thus does not cause any discomfort. l/Vith all, the subject has the free use of the hands without any annoyance.
Being constructed as shown, it is applicable to either hand and to a particular finger of the hand on which it is applied, and being capable of material stretching because of the open-work construction, may be used on different subjects whose hands differ in size vithin a reasonable range. The device is made preferably of linen thread, but obviously may be constructed of cord, cotton, silk, wool or any other material found suitable.
The wrist-band 2 at one extremity is provided with a button 4 constituting a detachable connection for the application and removal of the device, the button being inserted through a selected mesh opening.
Although designed primarily as a means for curing the finger sucking habit, the invention is susceptible of use for other purposes. For example, it may be employed as a sanitary finger covering to hold gauze or cotton to the fingers of children or adults when dressing` cuts, bruises or burns.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
A device for the purpose indicated coniprising a finger stall, a wrist band, and a web portion connecting the wrist band with the stall, the whole being of integral construction and reticulated structure and the y'rist band having a button at its freeeX- tremity selectively engageable with openings in the reticulated structure to hold the band in attached surrounding relation to the wrist of a wearer.
In testimony whereof he aftixes his signature.
GEORGE A. HOFFMANN.
