UNITED STATES ATENT eaten- JOHN R. TOWNSEND, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR 'lO 'WE3TINGHOUSE ELEC- TRIC & IJIANUFAC'I'URING COMPANY,
A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
GLGBE AND CANOPY HOLDER.
Application filed January 2, 1924.
This invention relates to holding device s, more particularly to means for holding in predetermined relation the globe and canopy of lighting units, such as street lighting posts.
In lighting fixtures of this type, it is customary to mount upon a. post of suitable character, a globe which is held by suitable means thereon. A canopy or cap of metal or of transparent material is placed there a 1 and the globe and canopy are held together by holding device.
A means for holding the same together which was commonly in use, consiited of a clan ping arrangement which was held from the base of the globe in predetermined position and was placed on the inside thereof. This type of globe holder functioned successfully to hold the canopy and globe together without any means external to the lighting unit, but was disadvantageous in that one or more bars necessarily extended from the base of the globe to the top thereof. These bars being close to the source of light, materially interfered with the projection of light from the unit and cast shadows of considerable size.
My invention is intended to obviate this difficulty, it being among the objects thereof to provide a holding device for lighting units which shall not interfere with the projection of light from the unit in all directions.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a holding device which shall be simple in construction, easy to manipulate and shall beornamental as well as useful.
In practicing my invention, I provide a globe and a canopy therefor which fits over the top thereof. A holding device consisting of a flexible metal band having a plurality of clip members on one side thereof is fitted at the junction of the two parts so that the clips engage the same. The ends of the metal band are removably secured together.
In the accompanying drawings constituting a part hereof and in which like reference characters indicate like parts,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a lighting unit embodying my invention;

thereof provided with an inturned top er l. A canopy 5 has an annular flange 6, at the lower end thereof adapted to fit over the inturned edge 1 of globe 1.
A band Y of flexible metal, such as brass, is provided with a plurality of equally spaced clips 8, each of which includes a flat body portion 9 and extending resilient arms 10 and 11 constituting a clip of U-shape. Upenings 12 are provided in the body portion 9 and rivets 13, passing through the same, secure clips 8 on the band 7. At one end of the band there is a struck-up tongue 14 which is adapted to fit into slot 15 at the opposite end thereof to hold the band in position. Suitable ornamentation, such as a series of openings 16 may be provided as desired.
In the use of my invention, I place the canopy 5 on the globe 1 and bend the band 7 so that the arms 10 and 11 of clips 8 engage flanges 4 and 6 respectively, of the globe and canopy. Tongue 1 1 is inserted in slot 15 to hold the clips in proper relative positions It will be noted that the application of my invention to hold the parts together is a very simple procedure and the resiliency of the holding devices allows for expansion and contraction of the glass parts without danger of breaking thereof. There are no obstructions to the passage of light from the globe and canopy such as to cause shadows to be cast upon the place to be illuminated. The construction of my device is very simple and the application thereof to a lighting unit renders the same more. attractive.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device for fastening together a flanged lamp globe and another member having a flange adjacent to said globe comprising an elongated strip of resilient material having means for securing the ends of said strip together and having a plurality of rows of resilient fingers spaced on one side, said rows extending lengthwise of said strip and the fingers being adapted to engage opposite sides of said flanges when the ends oi said strip are brought together.
2. A device for fastening together a flanged lamp globe and another member having a flange adjacent to said globe co1nprising an elongated strip of resilient material having securing means for the ends of said strip and having a plurality of curved pieces spaced on one side and lengthwise thereof, said pieces forming fingers for engaging the opposite sides of said flanges When the ends of said strip are secured in position.
3. A device for fastening together a flanged lamp globe and another member having a flange adjacent to said globe comprising an elongated strip of resilient material having securing means for the ends of said strips and having a plurality of U- shaped pieces spaced on one side and lengthwise thereof, said pieces forming fingers for engaging the opposite sides of said flanges when the ends of said strip are secured in position.
a. A holding device comprising an elongated strip, U-shaped clips thereon having fingers extending from one side of said strip and adapted to spring over adjacent flanges of a depending and a dependent structure and to hold said parts in predetermined relation when the ends of said strip are drawn together, and means for securing the ends of said strip for holding said clips and parts in engagement.
5. In a lighting unit including a globe and a canopy, adjacent annular flanges thereon, a holding device on the outside thereof for holding the said parts in predetermined relation comprising a split band, a plurality of U-shaped clips thereon for engaging saidflanges when said band encircles said flanges, and means for securing the ends of said band togetherr 6. In a lighting unit including a globe and a canopy, adjacent annular flanges thereon, a holding device 'on the outside thereof Which comprises an elongate strip, a plurality of U-shaped clips thereon for engaging said flanges and holding the same in predetermined relation when said strip is stretched and means for securing the ends of said strip together for holding said clips and flanges in engagement.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 17th day of Dec, 1923.
JOHN R. TOWNSEND.
