C. R. FARGO PAD HOLDER' Filed April 27, 1921/1' Patented Nov. 2, 1926.
UNITED STATES inane PATENT orric CHARLES It. FARGO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T
WILSON-JONES COMPANY,0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- SETTS.
PAD HOLDER.
Application led April 27,*1921.
My invention relates to pad holders in which the pad is removably held between the covers of the holder, which is preferably of book form, and it is an object of this invention to provide a simple and practical holder that can be economically manufactured and assembled, that permits the pad to be easily and readily inserted and etliciently retains the same.
My invention comprises the novel structure hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which similar reference characters refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure l is a side elevational View of my improved holder.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an interior plan view of the holder in unfolded position on a decreased scale.
Figure t is a section on the line lfl of Figure l.
Figure is a section on the line 5 5 of Figure 4;.
In the drawings, I have illustrated my pad holder as comprising a simple piece of leather 1 or the like folded upon itself to Vproduce a pair of parallel flaps in the form of a book or folder, with a novel pad retaining means 2 secured transversely thereto at a suitable location. The pad retaining means 2 comprises a resilient metal strip extending transversely across the inner sur face of a flap and bent around the lateral edges thereof and overlapping-the outer surface for a short distance in the form of retaining claws 3 having the projections .4r entering the outer surface of the flap. Interiorly of said flap, the metal strip 2 is pro vided with projecting spacing heads 5 that abut the inner surface of said Hap at points outwardly beyond the projections l producing a tendency to hold the claw members 3 tightly against the outer surface of the Serial No, 465,070.
cover The beads 5 space the main part of the metal strip a short distanceu from the inner surface of the flap in order to allow the card board base of a pad or the like to be slipped thereunder. The retaining means 2 is preferably placed a short distance from the rear folded back 6 of the holder.
In the use of the term pad, it is to be understood that the same is meant to include any bunch of leaves that are secured to a supporting base, fold or flap, or the. like, such as ordinary writing pads, note books, and memoranda.
In order to secure such a pad in my improved holder, the latter is unfolded, as shown in Figure 3, and the base, fold or flap of the pad is inserted under the retaining means or strip 2 from the right hand side in reference to Figure 3, and by sufficiently sliding the pad in the direction of insertion of the base or flap, the same becomes suspended by the retaining strip or means 2 so that the flaps can be folded to retain the pad in the form of a bool: as shown in Fgure 2.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a pad holder, a metal retaining strip extending transversely of the inner surface of said holder and having members einbracing the edges and opposite surfaces thereof and provided with spacing` beads abutting the inner surface of said holder.
2. In a pad holder, a metal retaining strip extending transversely of the inner surface of said holder and provided with beads for spacing the same from said holder, and
means securing the ends of said strip to the holder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subr scrbedmy name.
CHARLES R. FARGO.
