PATENT 0 SANDING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed February 7, 1925. Serial No. 7,456.
This invention relates to a sanding device for vehicles adapted to a ply sand 'in front of the brakin wheels.o the vehicle.
It is an object oi this invention to provide an automaticsand applying apparatus for vehicles wherein the sanding mechanism plie and is rendered totally inoperative at the will of the driver.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an automatically operating sander of the class described wherein the sanding operation can be manually controlled in addition to the automatic control as in cases where additional tractive effort is required or as preventive of skidding under slippery road conditions.
It is still another object of this invention to provide a sanding device of the class described automatically operable by either or both the regular or emergency brakes.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be a closures in the spec' companying drawings.
This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Fi re 1 is a plan view" of a vehicle chassis to w iich a device embodying features of this invention has been applied.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail elevation of the device.
Figure 3. is an enlarged section on the line III III of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view of one-of the sand valves.
Figure 5 is a. detail of the manual control for operating the sanding device.
Figure 6 is a section on the line VI-V of Figure 2.
As shown on the drawings: An automobile chassis is shown in th drawings, wherein the frame 10 is indicated, as w 11 as the front aizle 11, rear axle 12, wheels 13-, brake mechanism 14 on t rear wheels, and the intermediate brake-shaft 15 crosswise of the chassis frame. The brakes are operated by the hand lever 16 and brake rod 17 for the emergency brakes and the edal 18 and brake rod 19 for the foot rakes, both rods actuating levers on component parts of the brake-shaft 15 as is standard practice.
parent from the discation and the acwhen the brakes are apthe bar 20 will bemoved to To release the The exigencies of the chassis layout usually require that the emergency and foot levels, vice of this invention an L-shaped bar 20, as shown-in Figure'6, spanning-the two rods 17 and 19 to form the actuating-member for the sanding apparatus. The mounting of the. bar 20 on the rods 17 and 19 is such that in pulling either rod to actuate'its brake, one end of chassis about the other end as a pivot. If both brakes are' applied the center of the bar will be advanced correspondingly farther, resulting in a greater application of sand, as will be described hereinafter.
' with a hook 30 adapted to engage over the bar 20 on the brake rods. Applying either brake moves the bar 20 and thereby acts through the rod 29, shaft 26'and rods "24 to open the-sand valves 23. o
In order to provide for a manual control of the sanding apparatus when it is desired to apply sand independently of the brakes to improve skidding, a dash consisting of a knob31 and cord 32 trained the traction or to prevent pull control is provided,
over suitable pulleys 33 to engage a crank 34 on the shaft 26.
In order to prevent the automatic operation of the sanding device under favorable road conditions, means are rovided to lift the rod 29 off the bar 20, as s own by dotted lines in Figure 2. This comprises a bell crank member 35 linked to the rod 29 at 36 and having a plunger 37 arranged conveniently for the operation by. the driver. When this plunger is pressed downwardly until the notch 38"..therein engages the edge of the.
aperture 39 in the floor boards. to retain the plunger against the force of the spring 40. plunger'only requires a slight forward movement such as a kick by the operator. To insure positive retention of the plunger av curled spring 41 is mounted partly in the aperture 49 to press the plunger rearwardly.
I am aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles'of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon,'other-' wisethan necessitated by the prior art.
I claim:'
In combination with a vehicle and the brake actuating m hanism thereof, a bar bridging the hand and foot brake pull rods and adapted to be moved by the actuation of either brake rod, sand discharging mechanism carried by the vehicle, a hooked member associated with the discharging mechanism and adapted in one position to engage said bar, and manually controlled means for disengaging said hookedmember from said bar.
In testimony whereof I scribed by name.
JOHN F. MANDERNACK.
