G. F. TIFFANY BEDPAN Filed June 4 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 (ltboxmqf I Patented 0d. 26, 1926.
UNITED STATES GEORGE FRANK TIFFANY,
OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
BEDPAN.
Application filed June 4,
My invention relates to a toilet device for beds consisting of a carrier and a bucket, the former being adapted to be permanently secured in a mattress and the latter removably secured in the carrier.
The main object of the invention is to furnish a toilet device of this character which can be installed without disturbing the patient and similarly removed.
Another object of the invention is to provide means which will prevent the soiling of bed clothes during or after the use of the device.
In the accompanying drawings one em bodiment of the invention is illustrated, and:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrat ing the device installed in a mattress.
Figure 2 is a similar view on a larger scale. showing the carrier attached to the mattress, and
Figure 8 is a vertical section along line 3--3 of Figure 1, showing the carrier with the bucket in place and covered by a lid.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 10 represents a mattress of the usual construction with springs 11 at the bottom and a cotton or horse hair filling 12 on the top. This mattress is provided with an opening 13 extending through the same from top to bottonnand in this opening is inserted a cylindrical or tubular member 14 which forms the carrier for the bucket or receptacle 15. The tubular member 14: is provided with a narrow flange 16 at the top r thereof and a similar flange 17 at the bottom. Under each of these flanges is installed a Wide ringshaped collar 18 and 19 respectively, which collars fit tightly around the tubular member of the device and are secured as by stitches 20 to the top and bottom of the mattress; The parts thus far described constitute the permanently installed carrier. of the device. The bucket 15 which is of substantially the same length as the cylindrical or tubular portion 1 1, is open at the top and closed at its lower end by a bottom 21. Secured to the upper edge of the bucket, as by vulcanizing, is a flexible mattress protecting sheet or apron 22 which is preferably square and made from soft rubberized material. This sheet is in- 1924. Serial No. 717,817.
tended to be laid flat on top of the mattress, surrounding the carrier 14-.
The reference numeral 23 represents a comparatively heavy lid adapted to fit the inner diameter of the bucket 15 and is provided with an annular flange 24: resting on the upper edge of the bucket and on the flap or sheet 22 so as to completely close the upper part of the bucket. A handle 25 is provided on top of the lid 28 and is hinged thereto so that it may lie flat thereon.
The reference numeral 26 represents a narrow tube having a tunnel-shaped upper end 27 and extending through a suitable aperture 28 in the lid to within a short distance of the bottom of the bucket. This tube is removable and is intended as a urinating tube for male patients. When used by female patients, the lid 23 is removed and the sheet or apron 22 may be secured around the patients body by means of snaps or securing hooks 29 at the corners of the sheet and also by a strap 30. After the bucket has been used, the sheet or flap 22 is folded together and thrown into the bucket, which may then he slipped through the bottom end of the carrier let to be removed and emptied.
The lid 28 is then placed in position directly on the upper flange 16 of the carrier 14.
All parts of the device are made of rubher with the exception of the stitches 20. In installing the bucket in the carrier 14 while the patient is in bed, the bucket is dropped through the top opening of the carrier and the sheet or flap 22 spread out smoothly under the patient and, if found necessary, the flap or sheet is wrapped around the patients body.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A structure of the character described comprising a mattress formed with a passage in its intermediate port-ion opening through its upper and lower faces, annular collars secured upon the upper and lower faces of said-mattress and disposed about said passage with their inner peripheral edges in close proximity thereto, a tubular sleeve fitted in said passage in close contacting engagement with the walls thereof and having its ends provided with outstanding annular flanges in overlapping engagement with the inner peripheral edge p0rtions of said collars, a cylindrical receptacle removab'ly fitted in said sleeve and closed at its bottom and open at its top, and a protecting sheet for said mattress joined to the annula Walls of said receptacle at the open topthereof and adapted to be disposed in overlying relation to the mattress, upper collar and upper flange of said sleeve, and a cover for the upper end 01" said receptacle formed With an outstanding flange adapted to be disposed in overlying relation to said sheet and the upper flange of said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature:
