Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVIS e. THOMPSON, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CABLE-STOPPERS.
Specificaiion forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,363, dated March 2, 1875; application filed August 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVIS G. THOMPSON, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Chain-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to stoppers for ships chains or cables; and the improvement consists of a gate, which is hung to a stand, through which the chain passes, so as to be interlocked with the chain, and of a latch or lever so applied as to lock or fasten the said gate when it has been interlocked with the chain against movement, and thus through the gate stop and hold the chain against further travel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal vertical section of a stand having my improved chain-stopper applied, which is shown as in partial section and elevation. Fig. 2 is a face view of the chainstopper and one end of the stand carrying it. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, showing a modification in the hanging of the stop-gate.
'In the drawings, A represents a stand, through the hole B of which passes the chain or cable, 0 being the inner end and l) the outer end of said hole. At and across the inner end 0 of the hole B in stand A is a gateblock, E,which is hung at its upper end upon a center, a, so that it can be swung. This gate-block E, at its lower end, has a notch, b, by which to interlock it with the links of the chain, and thus to make an abutment to further progress of the chain through the hole of the stand A. F, a lever or latch at upper part of stand A, where it is hung on a center, a.
The lever F, at its end G, has a shoulder, H, by which to interlock it with the upper end of gate block E, and thus to fasten the gate firmly in position when it has been interlocked with the chain, whereby the chain is stopped and held secure against travel or movement through the stand A.
If the latch-lever F be lifted the gate-block is released, and thus the chain is set free for being let out or drawn in. It the gate-block be held at either angle of inclination shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the chain can be freely let out or drawn in.
In lieu of swinging the gate-block into the inclined position shown in Fig. 1, to free it from the chain, by slotting the gate-block where it is hung on the center a, the gate can be raised directly above and freefrom the chain.
Having thus described m y invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The gate E, pivoted to the stand through which the chain passes, and having at its lower end a slot, 1), as shown, in combination with the pivoted lever F, for locking the upper end of the pivoted or swinging gate in position when it has interlocked with the chain, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 9th day of July,,A. D. 1874.
D. G. THOMPSON.
