PATENT oFFlcE.
ENOS B. HIATT, OF PAIISADE, COLORADO.,
RING PACKING LID.
Application filed October 13, 1925. Serial No. 62,278.
This invention relates to a ring packing lid and has relation more particularly to a device of this kind designed for use in the packing of fruit and the like whereby a 5 completed pack is provided with an attractive toplayer to assure an efi'ectivev display of the packed contents and which at the same time permits stacking of the packs without injury to the contents.
Another. object of the invention'is to provide a packing ring lid especially designed and adapted for use in connection with my invention as disclosed in my Patent N o. 1,57 3,341 dated February 16, 1926 the present device constituting an improvement on the ring packing lid embodied in such prior application. l
The invention consists in the details of construction and in theA combination and arrangement of -the several parts of my im proved ring packing lidwhereby 'certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient 'and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novelvfeatures of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanymg drawings, wherein l Figure l is a view partly in section an partly 1n elevation illustrating a pack produced with the use of my improved lid:
Figure 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating my improved lid 1n` use and denoting the manner of such use, the container proper being diagrammatically indicated by broken lines;
partly in elevation illustrating in packing embodying the use proved lid;
Figure 4 is a view in topl plan of the lid as disclosed in Figures 2 and 3'unapplied;
Figure 5. is a transverse sectional view another step of my imtaken through a slightly modified lform of lid;
Figure 6 is a sectional View takenthrough a Astill further modified form of lid;
lFigure 7 is a sectional view illustrating another 'embodiment of the invention. As disclosed in the accompanying draw- 1ngs,.the lid or form L comprises the two superimposed plates 1 and 2, one of said plates having its outer surface concave and provided at a predetermined point inwardly of its margin with an outstanding annular shoulder 3. Theplate 1 inwardly of the shoulder 3 is provided with a series of 'annularly disposed concentric grooves or coris provided at itscenter with a depression 6 in lieu of the protuberance 5 and in which depression an apple or other fruit is adapted to be positioned. In Figure 6, the corrugations 4 are four in number for use with smaller fruit. These various forms of lids or forms are illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings to clearly establish the fact that I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any particular number of corrugations as this will depend upon the requirements of practice and'lt `will also be .understood that if desired the outer ,concave face of the `plate 1 may be smoothorv tmf j obstructed.
The marginal portion of the plate 1 outwardly ot' the shoulder 3 is returned and clamped orotherwise effectively enragef'l. o0
with an outstanding marginal fiangetdefining the plate 2, said 'plate 2 beingsubstantially pan like in form with its central portion raised, as at 8, for substantial contact `with the central or lower portion ofthe plateA 1 to effectively reinforce the' samel and particularly when the lid or form L 1s 1n use.
`When my improved lid or form is employed in connection with va packing structure as particularly disclosed in my Patent No. 1,573,341 hereinbefore referred to, the. lid or form L is preferably positioned on a slight incline toward the packer with the concave face of the plate 1 outwardly disposed. A layer of 1fruit is placed within the corrugations 4 whereupon the liner 9 positioned within a shell 10 is placed upon the lid or form L and substantially snugly receiving the shoulder 3 whereby the assembled liner 9 and shell 1l) are effectively maintained in applied position upon the lid or form. rIhe liner 9 is formed of cardboard or other kindred material to provide a substantially weak wall liner while the shell l0 is of sheet metal or other material affording a substantially fixed formation.
rIhe assembled liner and shell are then filled with fruit and the flange 7 engaged by the hands of the packer ,from below so that thc completed. assembly may be jarred to cause the fruit or the like to settle. The shell l0 is then removed leaving the liner 9 holding the contents in proper shape. n inverted shipping basket or container C is then placed over the liner and pressed down firmly. rI`he lid or form L and applied basket are held firmly together and the basket or container turnedv right side up, after which the lid or form L is removed and the shipping lid S applied.
'The lid or form L has a circular cavity adapted to receive a layer of fruit, the perimeter of the Cavity being defined by an upwardly extending wall or shoulder as at 3 for Contact with the periphery of the layer of fruit arranged upon the form to maintain the layer in properA position and to facilitate the application of the liner and shell or kindred retaining` member, an outer circular guide wall?) is Aprovided immediately outside of and paralleling the .defining wall and overwhich thefruit retaining member extends when `placed upon the form.
My improved lid or form L7 however, is
hot limited to use inconection with they packing structure hereinbefore referred to, as it is possible to directly apply upon the lid or form L .from above the basket or container C with the shoulder 3 extending up- WardlyV within said basket y or container when the basket or container is employed 'without the use of the shell or liner, it is preferred that initially the bottom of ,the basketbc removed so that upon completing -v From theI foregoing v.description it is i ing therearound.
recaees thought to be obvious that a ring packing lid constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly welladapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and'for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting' myself to the precise arrangement and 'formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1. A ring packing form for use Lin connection with a fruit retaining member, said' form being provided witha' circular cavity-'J- for the yreception of al layerof fruit, the cav-- ity having a circular defining wall which is adapted to Contact with theuperiphery of the layer, the form being further provided with the form, the circular guide wall-being lof cated rimmediately:outside of and paralleling the defining wall.
form being provided with a Icircular cavity for the reception of a layer of fruit, at series Vof concentric grooves formed in the cavity to insure concentric arrangement of the fruit, the outermost groove having a circular defining wall which is adapted to contactl with the periphery of the layer, the formbe- Y ing further provided with a circular guide- -a circular guide wall overwhichfthe fruit retaining member extends when' placed upon wall over which the fruit retaining member 'v extends wheu'placed upon the form, the cir- =cular guide wall being located immediately l outside f and paralleling the defining wall. 3. As a new article pf manufacture, a ring ,packing lidY comprising two superlm- :posed plates having'their marginal portions connected, one of said plates having its outer face concave, the second plate having its central part in contact with the low point of said concave to strenothen said first named plate, the first namedD plate adjacent its periphery but spaced therefrom being provided with an outwardly facingA shoulder extend- In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature.
