Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM G. PIKE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLUE-CLEANERS.
Spzcification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,279, dated March 2, 1875; application filed November 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. G. PIKE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Flue- Gleaner, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a fluecleaner, for the purpose of removing the dirt that may accumulate in the fines or tubes of steam-boilers by causing steam to pass through them in a spiral course, similar to that given to a rifleball by the grooves in the rifle-barrel, the construction and operation of which will be made plain by the detail description following.
In the drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan of the head. Fig. 3 is a plan of the tubes.
at b 0, Figs. 1 and 3, are tubes, which are screwed into the head d, Figs. 1 and 2. cf g, Fig. 2, are orifices in the head d, into which the tubes a b c are screwed. h, Fig. 1 is a tube that connects the head d with the steam.
The tubes a. b c are screwed into the head at,
and then twisted. into the spiral form, as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation is as follows: The head at being connected to the steam-supply by the tube h, the ends of the tubes at b c are inserted into the flue or tube to be cleaned. The steam is then turned on. The tubes a. b 0, being twisted into a spiral form, cause the steam to pass through the flue or tube in a spiral course, thereby effectually removing the dirt or ashes.
In the drawing I have shown three tubes. It is not necessary to have that number, as the work may be done with one spiral tube; but I prefer three.
I claim- A flue-cleaner composed of one or more tubes twisted into a spiral form, substantially as shown and described.
WM. G. PIKE.
