COMBINED SAFETY VALVE AND GAUGE.
Application filed August 30, 1923. Serial No. 660,080.
In carrying out the present invention it is my: purpose to provide a highly simplified and novel form of combined safety valve and gauge that is adapted to be carried by the end of a compressed air line or the end of the usual flexible hose of a hand pump forattachment to the usual valve stems of tires whereby the same may be inflated without any liability of the same blowing out upon over-inflation.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of such a device that includes a novel means for adjusting the tension upon the blow-off valve wherein this valve will be unseated whenever the pressure has reached a predetermined degree.
A still further object of my invention is to provide such a device wherein the same may be set for inflatiiw the tire to any pressure desired wherein the liability of the tire being inflated to a degree higher than that set is substantially negligible.
Yet another object is the provision of such a device that is extremely simple of construction and one that may be manufactured and marketed at relatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Now having particular reference to the drawing, my novel combined safety valve and gauge includes a cylinder 5, and an air inlet tube 6 101118Cl together at their lower ends and having communication with each other through the medium of a curved bypass 7, the end of this by-pass connecting with said cylinder 5 being so formed as to provide a valve seat 8, Figure 2. The upper end of the air inlet tube 6 is reduced and externally screw-threaded at 9, whereby the device may be connected to the end of the usual compressed air line or the end of the usual flexible air tube of the hand pump N rmally resting upon the before mentioned valve seat 8 is a valve element 10 that includes a disc 11 formed upon its under side with a pendant head 12 the edges of which are beveled as more clearly shown in Figures 5 and 6 for positioning within the valve seat, this disc 11 being provided at its periphery and at spaced points thereon with laterally extending lugs 13 that afford a means for spacing said disc from the interior of the cylinder 5 and for allowing the air to pass upwardly between this disc and said cylinder when the valve is raised. Upon the top side of this valve 10 there is formed an upwardly extending pin 14 that is surrounded by the lower end of an eX- pansible helical spring 15 that serves as a means for normally maintaining said valve in position upon the'seat 8.
The upper end of this cylinder 5 is open and internally screw-threaded for receiving a disc 16 that is provided with a central screw-threaded passage in which is arranged a relatively elongated thumb screw 17, the lower end of this thumb screw being swivelly connected to a disc 18 that has sliding movement within the cylinder and contacts with the upper end of said spring 15, it being at once apparent that a turning movement of the screw 17 in opposite direction will manifestly cause the tensioning or untensioning of said spring 15 as the case may be. As more clearly shown in Figure 4 this disc 18 is formed on its pe riphery with a laterally extending pin 19 that has free sliding movement within a vertical slot 20 of said cylinder 5, the wall of this cylinder 5 at opposite sides of this slot being provided with pressure indicating numerals 21, Figure 1.
The connecting by-pass 7 is provided with an outlet nipple 22 upon the end of which is arranged a coupling 23 whereby the device may be attached to the valve stem of a tire or other article to be inflated and in view or" the above description it will at once be apparent that after my device has been attached to the end or" an air line, the thumb screw 17 may be adjusted to apply the proper tension to the spring 15 for preventing the valve 10 from opening until the predetermined pressure has been injected into the tire. It the thumb screw 1'? has been so turned as to force the disc 18 clownwardly into the cylinder for registering the pin 19 with the indicating numeral 60 it will of course be understood that when the device is connected to a tire valve, air will enter the tire until the same has reached a pressure of 60 after which the pressure will be sufiicient to raise the valve stem from its seat and allow the air to escape outwardly through the slot 20 and thereby prevent over-inflation of the tire.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel and simplified form 0-5 combineu safety valve and gauge, and one that will meet with all 01" the requirements for a successful commercial use.
Minor changes may be made within the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A new article of manufacture constituting an element of a gauge assembly; a onepiece lJ-shaped casting, one branch of which adapted to function as a valve cylinder the wall of said branch being comparatively thin and provided with a slot, the free open end thereof being screw threaded internally for application of a closing disc, the remaining branch being or a greater length and of a comparatively smaller cross sectional diameter and provided at its open end with a reduced screw threaded hose connection, the bight portion embodying a comparatively thick wall forming a valve seat at its pointof juncture with the first named branch, said branches and bight portion being of tubular cross-sections, and the second named branch and bight portion forming an air passage said passage being I of substantially uniform diameter from end to end, and said bight portion being provided with a laterally projecting flanged air discharge nipple adapted to be connected with a tire valve. 1
