UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
IRA J. CON KLDT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM B. KINSEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED POKER AND TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 60,006, dated February 23, 1875; application filed January 5, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRA J. OONKLIN, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combined Poker and Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side View of the device embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a top or plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof. Fig. 4 is a bottom view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in an implement combining both a poker and pair of tongs. For this purpose the two turned-up ends of the pair of pokers jointed to each other are adapted to come in contact and form a single prong. The invention also consists in making the handles elastic, sothat after the turned-up ends are in contact the handles may be brought closer to each other, and thus hold the said ends firmly together, for preventing ashes, 8w, passing in between them during the poking or raking operations.
Referring to the drawings, A represents two pokers, which are pivoted to each other and so arranged that the turned-up ends B B will come in contact, and the two handle portions 0 C may be grasped simultaneously, whereby the two pokers will appear as a single poker, and may be manipulated as such. When pieces of fuel require removal from the stove or other heating apparatus the pokers are opened and adapted to grasp the fuel, whereby the implement constitutes a pair of tongs, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4:. If desired, the pokers may be opened and the fire raked thereby simultaneously at two places. When the pokers are closed it is important that the ends B are held thus, so that ashes, 850., do not clog between them. For this purpose the handle portions 0 are elastic, so as to require pressure to close them subsequently to the closing contact of the ends B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 The combination of two pokers jointed to each other, each having a turned-up end, B, and an elastic handle, (3, the two ends, when the pokers are folded, coming together and forming a single prong, the handles coming together closely after closing of the ends B, and two complete tong-jaws being provided when the pokers are opened, all as set forth and shown.
IRA J. OONKLIN.
