'METHOD OF SLITTING BLANKS FOR EXPANDED LOAD-BEARING MEMBERS.
Application filed October 30, 1926. Serial No. 145,356.
This invention relates to a method of slitting a metal blank in preparation for subsequent expanding operations and utilize a blank of special cross sectional form.
The cross section of the expanded load hearing member resembles that of an I-beam and a blank similar in cross section to an I-beam is suggested by the ultimate form of the cup anded load bearing member. I have found, however, that such a blank is disadvantageous by reason of the fact that during certain phases of the slitting operation its parts are presented at obtuse angles to the shearing edges which results in an objectionable dragging effect and detracts from the oleanness and accuracy of the shear cut.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method such that the blank of special form may be slit with greater facility and effioiency than a blank of regular Lform.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
. Figure 1 is a cross section of the blank.
FigureQ is a partial plan view thereof. Figure 3 is a cross section showing a phase of the slitting operation.
Figure 4: is a plan view of a portion of the blank conforming to the operation shown in Figure 3.
Figures 5 and 6 are cross sections on the respective lines 5-5 and 66 of Figure 4:.
Figure 7 is a cross section showing the final phase of the slitting operation.
Figure 8 is a plan view ofa portion of the blank conforming to the operation shown in Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the blank conforming to the operation shown in Figure 7.
It will be understood that the blank after slitting may be treated in any suitable manner and by any suitable mechanism to eifect the expansion and that the present invention is not concerned with details of the subsequent expansion steps for which reasons the illustration of an expansion process applicable to the slitted blank is deemed unnecessary.
According to the invention the blank B as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is provided with parallel flanges 1 and a connecting web 2 which has a wide-angled V cross section that provides angularly related longitudinal web portions 2 and 2 The slitting rolls may be of any suitable type which operate by a shearing action in the manner tobe hereafter set forth and the slit ting is performed in two successive stages, the first stage by the rolls 3 (Fig. and the second stage by the rolls 4 (Fig. 7). In the first stage (Figs. 3 to 6) the blank is formed with the central row of slits 100 and in the sec- 0nd stage (Figs. 7, 8 and 9) with the two outer rows of slits 101, these being located closeto the web.
The wide-angled V cross section of the blankis of advantage as will appear from Figs. 3 and 7 in that the angle relativelyto the shearing edges of the portions which are displaced during the slitting is at no point greater than a right angle and this characteristic provides for greaterfacility in the slitting operation than is possible where, in a blank of regular I-form, certain portionsot the web which would be displaced during the slitting operation would lie at an obtuse angle to the shearing edge. i
It will be understood that the blank is fed through the slitting rolls in any suitable man ner and that the slitting operation'is preferably practiced in connection with the delivery of the blank from the mill stand and while the blank is at or near the degree of heat which it had upon emergence from such stand. .Thus the rolls 4- are shown as mountedbetween feed rolls 14 which act onthe flanges 1 and such feed rolls which are driven by any suitable means (not shown) may be provided in any desired number or arrange ment.
In the first stage of the slitting operation as effected by the rolls 3the portion 2" is moved into a plane normal to and located cen trally of the flanges 1 and parts of the portion 2 which are incorporated with the intermediate bonds are similarly displaced (Figs. 4 and 6) while the remaining parts of the por tion 2* are held in the original laterally inclined plane (Figs. 3 and 5) andare thus sev cred from the adjacent parts of the portion 2. In the second stage of the slitting as effected by the rolled the parts of the portions 2 which during the first stage are held in their original plane are moved into the same plane as theportion 2', that is to say, a plane normal to and located centrally of the flanges 1 and from this common plane adjacent parts of both of the portions2 and 2 as well as the intermediate bond providing portions are displaced into a common plane parallel to the plane from which the displacements started,
the portions so displaced being thus severed from the web along lines parallel and adjacent to the flanges and leaving in the plane from which the displacement started those portions which provide-the bonds between the struts and the chords, i. e. the outer lines of portions are indicated at 102, the interme diate bond providing portions at 103, the panel point providing portions at 104; and the chord providing portions at 105.
Having fully described my invention I claim:
1. The method of slitting a blank for use in connection with the production of expanded load bearing members, said blank having marginal flanges and a wide-angled V-shaped web characterized by parallel longitudinal portions inclined laterally at opposite angles to one another, which consists in displacing one of said longitudinal portions into a plane normal to the flanges and simultaneously displacing at regular intervals parts of the second longitudinal portion into the same plane while holding the remaining parts of the second longitudinal portion against displacement, thereby to shear said portions longitudinally along regularly recurring lines and form a row of slits, andthen displacing regularly recurring parts of both of said longitudinal portions in which the parts between the ends of the slits are included into a common plane parallel to said normal plane while leaving intervening parts in said normal plane, thereby to shear said displaced parts from the adjacent parts of the web longitudinally along regularly recurring lines and form outer rows of slits.
2. The method of slitting a blank for use in connection with the production of expanded load bearing members, said blank having marginal flanges and a web characterized by parallel longitudinal portions inclined laterally at opposite angles to one another, said portions thereby having the cross section of a wide-angled V, which consists in shearing said portions from one another along regularly recurring lines, thereby to form a row of slits, and relatively displacing the parts of said portions which lie at the sides of said slits, certain of said parts being displaced into a plane normal to the flanges, and then shearing both of said portions from adjacent parts of the web along regularly recurring lines, thereby to form rows of slits at each side of said first named row and displacing in the same direction as before and int-o a plane parallel to said normal plane the parts of said longitudinal portions adjacent the slits of said last named rows and leaving intervening parts in said normal plane.
3. The method of slitting a blank for use in connection with the production of expanded load bearing members, said blank having marginal flanges anda wide-angledV shaped web characterized by pa 'allel longitudinal portions inclined laterally at opposite angles to one another, which consists in iassing said web through cooperating rolls and by means of said rolls displacing one of said longitudinal portions into a plane normalto the flanges and simultaneously displacing at regular i11- tervals parts of the second longitudinal portion into the same plane while holding the remaining parts of the second longitudinal portion against displacement, thereby to shear said portions longitudinally along regularly recurring lines and forma row of slits, and then passing said web through other coop crating rolls and by means of the same displacing regularly recurring parts of both of said longitudinal portions in which the parts between the ends of the slits are included into a common plane parallel to said normal plane while leaving intervening parts in said normal plane, thereby to shear said displaced parts from the adjacent parts of the web longitudinally along regularly recurring lines and form outer rows of slits.
4. The method of slitting a blank for use in connection with the production oi expanded load bearing members, said blank having marginal flanges and a web characterized by parallel longitudinal portions inclined laterally at opposite angles to one another, said portions thereby having the cross section of a wide-angled'V, which consists in passing said web through cooperating rolls and. by means of said rolls shearing said portions from one another along regularly recurring lines, thereby to form arow of slits, and relatively displacing the parts of said portions which lie at the sides of said slits, certain of said parts being displaced into a plane normal to the flanges, and then passing said web through other cooperating rolls and by means of the same shearing both of said portions from adjacent parts of the web along regularly recurring lines, thereby to form rows of slits at each side of said first named row and displacing in the same direction as before and into a plane parallel to said normal plane the parts of said longitudinal portions adjacent the slits of said last named rows and leaving intervening parts in said normal plane. I
In testimony whereof I hereby aflix my signature.
WILLIAM H. KLOCKE.
