TWO-PIECE CHAIN LINK.
Application filed January 24, 1927. Serial No. 163,036.
My present invention relates to improvements in a chain link construction as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a two-part link which may be used for uniting the ends of a chain or sections of a chain which may have been broken.
A further object of my invention is to provide a link which is substantial in its construction, serviceable and compact.
A further object is in providing a link wherein the removable partion fits snugly into the body portion without projecting parts.
A further object is to provide a link wherein the engaging portions between the removable portion and the body portion are fitted together in such a manner that they will tensionally engage when the removable member is in its normal position.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent ensuing a perusal of the following specification read in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a general form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section view of the body portion with the removable portion in position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view showing one of the gripping members of the removable portion and the main portion as it would be just prior to being engaged.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the different views.
The body portion 1 has a C-shaped formation. The free ends 2 and dare provided with angular staggered faces as at 4 and 5 adapted to receive a removable portlon 6, having its ends adapted to fit into the staggered faces 4 and 5. The rivets 7 extend through the ends of the body portion 1 and the ends of the removable portion 6.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the protruding portions 8 are hooked into the protruding portions 9 of the removable portion 6. This construction gives a binding grip to the engagement between the ends of the body portion 1 and the removable portion 6. In connecting up the removable portion 6 with the body portion 1, they may be pressed slightly together, so that the removable portion 6 may be positioned and then allow the ends of the body portion 1 to return to their normal position.
Referring to Fig. 3, the inner face 10 of each protruding portion 8 is tapered out wardly while the inner face 11 of each protrudmg portion 9 is concaved to receive the portion 10. When the removable portion 6 1s engaged in this manner, it cannot have any transverse movement without being disengaged from its normal position. The ends 2 and 3 of the linkwill be brought slightly together, the removable portion 6 positioned and the ends then allowed to expand to their normal position. There will be a vary tight gripping effect between the protruding portions 8 and the protruding portions 9. It may be desirous of using the rivets 7 is some particular cases, but with this construction, it is felt that, the rivets may be eliminated.
The foregoing specification and annex drawings disclosed what I consider to be the best way of carrying my invention into practice, but it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the precise details shown, as it will be evident that these may be varied to some extent without departing from the nature of my invention.
What I claim as new is: 1
1. A link comprising a substantially C- shaped body portion, having its ends provided with a tapered serrated face; a removable portion, having its ends provided with a tapered serrated face, adapted to en gage with the ends of said body portion; the gripping side of each serration forming said serrated faces, being formed at an acute angle to the direction of normal tension and the ends of said body portion being adapted to be sprung towards each other so as to permit the serrations on said removable portion to inter-engage with the serrations on the ends of the body portion, thereby interlocking the removable portion to the G-shaped member to form a closed link,
2. A link comprising a substantially C- shaped body portion, having its ends provided with a tapered serrated face; a removable portion, having its ends provided. with a ta ered serrated face, adapted to engage wit the ends of said body portipn; the gripping side of each serratron forming said serrated faces, being formed at an acute angle to the direction of normal tension; the
eeaves ping sides of the interlocked serrations having auxiliary interlocking portions to pr vent lateral movement of the removable por- 10 tion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature AVON G. LAWSON.
