Each tooth on its forward or acting face has secured thereto an adjusting tine 35 pro ferably of curved formation, as shown, which tine is fixedly secured at its lower end to the associated tooth and is spring connected at its upper end through the medium of a rearwardly extending adjusting bolt 36 fixed to the tine and slidably entered through the tooth, which bolt carriesan interposed spring 37, and the bolt is adapted to be drawn back by means of a nut 38, so that the normal position of the tine can be adjusted against spring tension to the desired degree. This arrangement provides a spring surface of contact for material so that in case an excessive amount of material. is carried up to the point indicated, the tines will yield sufliciently to prevent choking of the machine.
The gathering teeth near their lower ends are supported by aU-shaped draft frame comprising side arms 39 and a rear cross connection 40, to which cross connection the several teeth are secured by links 41, which arrangement permits the teeth to individually accommodate themselves to ground inequalities which may be encountered. The vertical elevation of the entire series of teeth may be regulated by raising or lowering the draft frame, the arms of which, on opposite sides of the machine, are pivoted at the points 42 to the adjacent side rails of the main frame. In order to provide for the raising and lowering of the draft frame, draw rods 43 are employed, which rods on each side of the machine, extend forwardly and connect with the upper arms of levers 44, which levers are rigidly mounted upon a transversely extending rock shaft 45, so that the parts will operate in unison on both sides of the machine.

A notched segment 57 is provided in proximate relation to the hand lever 48, so that the latter may be held in adjusted position.
In operation, the machine, adjusted as in Fig. 1, is drawn to the field and when the point is reached to begin operations, the driver thrusts the hand lever forwardly, which, through the connection shown, draws forward the lower legs of the arched axle into oblique relation with the frame, thereby allowing the rear end of the frame to descend until the ground power wheel comes into ground engagement. Simultaneously through the connection shown, the gathering teeth are lowered into ground engaging posi tion, after which the continuedadvance of the machine will cau'sethe elevating cylinder to rotate and the inclined cross conveyor to travel toward the discharging side of the machine.
As a shock of grain is encountered, the teeth of the elevating cylinder will sweep down over the head of the shock and topple the head backwardly, and at the same time the gathering teeth will pass under the base' of the shock so that the same will be carried up head-first and thereafter it is deposited head-first upon the transverse conveyorwhich in turn will carry it upwardly and laterally in position to be discharged into the wagon which travels alongside the loader without material disarrangement of the sheaves composing the shock. In a loader, the combination of a frame, a rotatable elevator journaled to the frame, gathering teeth in proximate relation to the teeth of the elevator, a power wheel carried by the elevator rotatable therewith, an arched axle having'its upper portion pivoted, to the frame, supporting wheels journaled on the lower ends of the arched axle, adjusting means for swinging the arched axle forwardly to lower the power wheel into ground engaging position, and a brake for stopping rotation of one of the supporting wheels to cause a rearward swinging of the arched axle towards vertical position to effect a lifting of the power wheel substantially as described.
